My second visit to Nova Scotia in two months. Thanks to my Canadian friends Laurence Comeau, Jamie Harris, Rob Young, Dale Spates, their families & relatives. Also to my new friends across the pond. A marvellous country and marvellous, welcoming and hospitable people. You haven't seen the last of me. Apologies a couple of clips were out of sync and also the rawness of the clips and some excess ...

Trip of a lifetime - to be repeated. New camera and software so please excuse the amateur video. Special thanks to Laurence, Jamie, Mark, Dale & Rob. And Katinka of course for being the mad Hungarian swordswoman and super-host. Search Facebook for 'Nova Scotia Bushcraft'. Mad Canadian bushcrafters? Best in the world.

Two nights away for 16 Cubs (four with special needs} at our local district scout campsite. Fun and games plus hiking and adventure in the woods with some great shelters constructed. Sardines and marsh mallows cooked over the fire plus all the usual mayhem that kids aged 8-10 bring with them. An excellent weekend though. Only had three hours' kip Friday night. Too much chit chat around the camp...

A hidden gem. Hundreds of acres sandwiched between a motorway and an 'A' Road. A fantastic facility for a solo overnighter or a camp for 400. PART 2 to come after next weekend. This vid filmed by Sebastian on my Nokia 925.

Quality time with my son Sebastian and an excellent breakfast. My ImageMixer 3 for Panasonic has been getting slower and slower, Often failing to save the completed vid. I made this using Windows Live Movie Maker. A lot quicker to make. Time-consuming to upload though because of the slow Broadband where I live. I've used them for years here in America mostly Upper East Coast. It is also useful for my dog at night I can tell where he is, or if he's walking behind me I can tell if he stops. I love these bells. I never thought about them as oversized cat bells. 😂

Funny, I am here because I was thinking of adding bells to my hikes but was not certain if people did such a thing. What better way to show a bear that you are in the area than bells. My counter argument was maybe bells only would act as dinner bells, lol. I say the best idea to me is to be always armed, But I believe the bells are still a great inexpensive idea. I bet the main reasons people would not like the bells would be because it would interfere with their idea of what a nature walk would or should sound like. I say saftey first for me but also for the bear. I mean... we are walking through their yard anyhow. )

My thoughts as well. Why would anyone want to attract bears by sounding this dinner bell?

I might get one to warn wild boars that I'm coming. I'm not scared of them, but I respect their strength to seriously harm me and they want their peace and I want my peace. We both got our own business that does not involve each other.

We have a joke in North America: how can you tell the difference between black bear scat and grizzly scat? Grizzly scat is the one that has bells in it.

Alternatively, you can just run a chainsaw to scare away the bears in the UK.

Bear bells are great to have. It lets the bears know where you are so they can avoid you. Most black bear will avoid you if they know where you are. Not certain about Grizzly but many backpackers out west use this product or a home-made version. (posted form North America).
