Softly and Tenderly
"Softly and Tenderly" was written by Will L. Thompson in 1880. At the Sullivan Southern Baptist Church in Sullivan, Illinois in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s this song was sung as an invitation or altar call. Sometimes, if the Pastor thought the Holy Spirit was moving, we would sing these verses over and over in the hopes that some poor soul might respond to the invitation of Jesus Christ who, through His death, burial, and Resurrection, conquered Death, and all the forces of Evil.
Softly and tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling for you and for me
See, on the portals He's waiting and watching
Watching for you and for me.
Come home, come home
You who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner, come home.
Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading
Pleading for you and for me
Why should we linger and heed not His mercies
Mercies for you and for me?
Come home, come home
You who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner, come home.
Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing
Passing from you and from me
Shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming
Coming for you and for me.
Come home, come home
You who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner, come home.
O for the wonderful love He has promised
Promised for you and for me
Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon
Pardon for you and for me.
Come home, come home
You who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner, come home...
Softly and tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling for you and for me
See, on the portals He's waiting and watching
Watching for you and for me.
Come home, come home
You who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner, come home.
Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading
Pleading for you and for me
Why should we linger and heed not His mercies
Mercies for you and for me?
Come home, come home
You who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner, come home.
Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing
Passing from you and from me
Shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming
Coming for you and for me.
Come home, come home
You who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner, come home.
O for the wonderful love He has promised
Promised for you and for me
Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon
Pardon for you and for me.
Come home, come home
You who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner, come home...

"Yes, I Know!" was written by Anna W. Waterman in 1920. Mrs. Waterman had fervently been praying for her husband, whose life was headed in the wrong direction. Mrs. Waterman's prayers were heard, and Mr. Waterman opened his heart to Jesus Christ, and his life was forever changed. This beautiful song captures the faith, hope and love that should more often be demonstrated in today's Christianity.

There have been many good versions of this great song over the years. For feeling and expression I think my favourite is the one by Gram & Emmylou, but I also love the Everly Brothers' version. Jim Capaldi did an interesting up-tempo number, and of course Roy Orbison delivered a fine version. I like your rendition here though.
I agree. Gram & Emmylou were fantastic together. Thank you for listening, and thank you for kind words.
