    As someone who's finally getting more feedback on their UX Writing portfolio, I agree with all these points. Keep going back and reworking those case studies and microcopy if it doesn't work. But most importantly, have fun with it! Like she said, mistakes are part of the process, as is how we learn from them. Also, side note: Kat's courses on UX Writing are super helpful, even if you think you have a good handle on things. I recommend.

    Which UX writing certificates from big name schools would you recommend?

    • @write-with-dr-kat
      @write-with-dr-kat 2 місяці тому

      Hi Sade ♥️ You mean big UX Writing schools like UX Writing Hub, UX Content Collective, etc.? None. They’re terribly overpriced and don’t have a good reputation among many experienced writers (who will be part of the hiring process). I recommend taking courses that give you better value for money and are made by active UX Writers (either try my courses or the courses from thekatcopy by Katherine Igiezele), and then, if you want to get a big UX name in your CV, add general UX courses by The Interaction Design Foundation or Nielsen Norman. The IDF and NN courses can be quite expensive, too, but they have a better reputation among UX professionals and also higher quality in education. Also, you might want to google „UX Writing course university“ to see if there are academic courses - I’m sure there are new ones popping up every other month! I know, for example, of a Professional Certificate in Content Design from Glasgow Caledonian University. Classic universities also have good reputation among employers and hiring managers. But please, please, please, don’t spend thousands of dollars on basic UX Writing knowledge from an online school that isn’t even academic.

Thank you for putting everyone's thoughts out into tangibility. ❤ As a jobseeker looking to break into UX or copy, I've felt so much burnout. There are days I think about giving up and just coasting by on small side gigs and returning to the service industry. It's hard to cope when resources aren't as easy to come by, but knowing I'm not alone is a great help, as is knowing I can do this.

    i think the more people are seeing what mechanism is behind websites and what UX UI designers do and how they lure the consumer to click, buy, read, and consume more, the more people are fed up with being lured into this psychological game of people who have a soul or anu value's UI UX designers are just playing the game and do it all for the $$ and only do what their greedy bosses tell them to do

    Hey Kat, I am Miya, a copywriter with 4 years of experience. I want to transition to UX writing. Will that be a good choice? And my background is in Computer engineering. Will technical writing be more suited for me? I am a bit confused. What is your opinion?

    • @write-with-dr-kat
      @write-with-dr-kat 4 місяці тому

      Hi Miya, thank you so much for your comment. What an interesting background! With your expertise, I'd think you could potentially thrive in all three writing disciplines: UX Writing, Technical Writing, AND Copywriting, and it probably depends on what is more fun for you to do. However, if I HAD to give a recommendation, I'd go with UX Writing, as it is closer to Copywriting than Technical Writing, so you could benefit not only from your technical background but also from your Copywriting experience. Do you have any experience with UX Writer or Technical Writing yet and know what feels more "right" to do for you?

      Yes, definitely! They're all not perfect, but some of my favorites in German are: - Douglas and Doctolib for their overall UX Writing; - Blume2000 for their tone & voice; - ZDF Mediathek for their clarity and helpfulness; - Fritz Kola for their conciseness/efficiency. But there are many more! I think it's also worth looking into meditation and mindfulness applications like 7mind.

    Hello Dr Kat, I found your courses on UX Writing on Coursera. One thing led to another and now here I am binge watching your videos. Being an Indian this comparison was super interesting to me. Indian banks offer so many services/options on their website because they want to cater and look lucrative to all. It helps them differentiate themselves from other competitors. Second, that 'proud home owners' phrase was because buying a home is deemed a personal and professional success. For most Indians it is there only dream- to have a roof over their head. Living in rented houses are seemed as failure. Then comes the offers be it in credit cards, loans, or other things. We, Indians, love to bargain and brag about it to family and friends. That's why they highlight it so much. We also love to emphasise on certain things. For example, saying just safe and secure is not enough. We need more words to back it up. I personally don't like the Indian Banking sites and apps. They are not user-friendly, have too much noise, and very distracting. Definitely not modern, it could be also because we tend to trust old brand names over new ones, no matter how convenient and brilliant they are.

    • @write-with-dr-kat
      @write-with-dr-kat 5 місяців тому

      Wow, thank you so much for your detailed comment! I love, love, love hearing the perspective of an Indian person on this! The funny thing is, owning a house in Germany, is people’s biggest dream here as well (or, well, now things are shifting a bit with Gen Z, but I think for most people, it still is the biggest life goal to be able to live in a house with your family), but German banks never spell it out like that. And to be honest, I think that’s sad! I do agree that the usability of Indian websites might not be perfect, but I also think that the German banking websites lack emotion and identity. I feel like German banking marketers (is that the correct term? 😅) are too shy, too scared to talk about dreams, life goals, wishes. It is often deemed unprofessional to involve concepts like these, and I hope that offering a direct comparison will broaden the horizons of all of us. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with all of us, and also thank you for watching and working with my courses! ♥️

    I really wonder how many industry professionals might be discouraging newcomers just to reduce competition, similar to how people in Austin say, "Don't move to Austin; it sucks here now"? Then you go to Austin and it's pretty damn amazing. Could they just be concerned that an influx of new talent could increase competition, potentially leading to experienced workers being replaced by younger professionals who can do the job just as well, if not better, for less money? Difficult to say from the outside.. They seem to stand little to gain by telling them otherwise and much to gain and or secure by telling them what they are currently saying. People...

      Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! This is a great point here! Especially with many fulltime positions being shifted towards contraction work, fear might be a factor! Which is particularly sad because the ones being most discouraged are probably the ones with the highest potential in the field. Many of the early bird UX Writers are just not used to even having competition (this applies to me, too!), but as you indicate, discouraging people to try their luck or acting as if UX Writing was an absolute rocket science of a skill that you can only acquire if you are exceptionally brilliant is just not it

Thanks for sharing your wonderful feedback and also, happy that my content is helpful!

    This is such a lovely video and loooove your neighbourhood - thanks for sharing it with us :) So, this time my curiosity question is on.. what are the softwares you use to get your tasks done? I can see that you use Miro for organizing ideas and Figma for the actual work (writing). In this line, can you brief what other software helps in your day-to-day activities as a UX writer? And one more, do you also work on copywriting and other writing tasks for the part time job you mentioned as it's a startup? If yes, how do you switch between different types of writing (mentally and technically)? Also, I wanted to mention that your Udemy courses are a gem (sooo resourceful) but still I keep throwing a lot of questions at you - sorry, can't help :P Let me know :)

      Pavi, good to see you again! Thank you so much for your kind words and more questions! I actually love so much to engage and discuss and share information, so always feel free to ask MORE questions, haha ❤️ Regarding the tools questions: I don't know if you have seen it yet, but I just published an Instagram post where I share all my tools and what I do with them! I hope it helps! And regarding your second question: This question is so, so good! In my startup setting, I am required (or well, asked) to literally write all kinds of text: UX copy for our website and shop, blog posts, letters to our customers, Instagram ads, Google ads, job ads, YOU NAME IT. And it's so funny because having to do these different kinds of writing has really showed me how important it is to have a systematic approach. For UX Writing, I have that, no problem. Blog writing, I've learned that, no problem. But (good) copywriting is something I can only do when I'm in a certain creative mood. Luckily, I don't have to do a lot of copywriting, but I'm currently becoming increasingly aware of the fact that I need to learn copywriting properly in order to have it easier when switching between disciplines. Right now "switching" between the different types of writing for me means, I just do my copywriting tasks when I feel like I'm capable of doing them. What helps me is looking at inspiration of cool copy pieces (and I also have a collection of them) and brainstorming, but taking a class on copywriting is definitely on my to do list for this year! Hope this helped ❤️
