The concept of "register" is very helpful... it explains a lot of social tension that happens and it really helps to have a word for it and understand how it works... I've had people say I come off as arrogant or pretentious online and I think it's just that I use a more formal register than they expect, when talking about topics I take seriously.... Another thing it helped me understand is why I can understand some speech in a particular language quite easily but others are much more difficult... it's because I know the informal register much better in that language than the formal one (partly because it often has a smaller vocabulary)... it's good to have a word for that so I can make sense of that
