Some companies may sell replacement picks for their EDC pick pens (as noted by Rook Knight's recent video, Southern Specialties?). So, if you're not into making your own pick tips, these companies may be quite convenient. The screw holes are 5mm on the camera knobs, so you would need to do a little investigation if the replacement picks are within specifications. I use a fast set GB weld, two part epoxy. @@Nicks-Picks When I bought the Silver Bullet, invented by Matt Smith, I thought it would unleash my skills, and I would be able to replicate all the videos of disc detainer picking that I had seen at the time. But, I was convinced that all the locks I was working with back then required rear disk tensioning. I even ordered an additional pick tip and shortened its tip slightly to perfectly align with the elevation of the bottom disc. This is the primary reason why different tips are included in the Silver Bullet set. Unless you want to balance the thinset of rear disc tensioners on the bottom disc (doable, but awkward), there was no such thing as a universal rear disc tensioner that wasn't proned to slipping off the bottom disc as rotational force was applied. This is my understanding, unless someone tells me otherwise. When I first started using the pick, sure I was able to pick several locks within the Chinese realm of tolerances. But I never could pick locks using front discs tensioning; all but one. This lock had a zero disc on the top and bottom. More importantly, I never got "clicks" when I picked my locks like you see in YT videos. That started to charge just recently after making my own homemade disc detainer picks, learning how to switch between discs, top and bottom (when using a top disc tool), and after adding the propeller handles to my tool. The handles make a huge difference and a certain amount of torque is required to get the disc gates to click. But it's more than that. You must let off on the tension slightly to rotate the discs back and forth to determine whether you are in a true gate or a false one. This analysis is also used to feel the friction of the disc when it's not in a gate at all. I noticed that it takes me longer to pick the same lock using rear disc tensioning after using front disc tensioning. Part of the problem is I'm using two different tools. I highly recommend buying or making a tool that offers shouldering against the lock body similar to the RWB pick. Just because LPL picks all his locks freehanded and without shouldering components, there's no shame in the game doing otherwise. I like picking my locks in hand or on a table (no vises required), but with shouldering (when top disc tensioning); the bigger the better in most cases. It helps keep the pick tip aligned and reduces slipping off the top disc. The feedback and binding order of setting discs may feel quite different when using rear or front tensioning picks. More importantly, the diameter of your pick tool handle makes a huge difference. A large shaft tends to amplify the arc length of a gate. The thickness of your tip is important too. I think SB tips are about 2.90 mm. You can go thicker, but maintaining the alignment becomes more critical. I like thicker because there's less play. But this only works when I'm dealing with Chinese locks without warding and with wide open discs. I never bought the cheap Chinese picks that were rampantly used prior to the Sparrows tool, which is a cheap copy of LPL and B. Bill's tool. I went with the Silver Bullet. It was the top dog at the time. Nick, eveyone learns at different paces. It's your own discoveries that the locksport community cares about.

Not surprisingly, I have seen so many channels inevitability picking antique padlocks to feed their algorithms. Bosian Bill was an absolute hack on his channel when it came to the way he treated antiques. "There are you other channels you can find," he said, after I called him out. I want to be the guy that can make a key as well....none of that silver soldiered stuff. Also, I don't want to be at the mercy of antique key blank hoarders. That's why I machine my own blanks. And today, I picked a third lock with my new pick tip end using rear tensioning. Clearly, this tip is as universal as you're going to get for non-warded keyways. So far, it has eliminated the need for having to guess what length of rear tensioning tip to use when the last disc is a tension disc. I'm anticipating there will be exceptions when it comes to lock design, but for the common Chinese disk detainer locks, no problem. All you have to do is stick the end tip to the bottom of the keyway. Then, pull the tip until you feel the back of the bottom disc. Continue to pull the pick unil it engages with profile of the disc. Finally, just rotate the tensioning pick clockwise and push down slightly to nest the pick with the top of disc. I'm now making these tips where there is only 0.30 mm of material outside of the bit cuts next to the pick shaft. The Silver Bullet picking tips measure 0.50 mm thick

I don't mean to suggest that a diamond profile is a suitable replacement for a rectangular version. Obviously, warding plays a part. In addition, the ability to retest discs for gate set can be restricted by the overall aperture created by two neighboring discs. Imagine the size of the keyway when one disc is rotated fully clockwise and a neighboring disc is rotated fully counterclockwise. It stands to reason that a diamond profile works really well or quite poorly, based on key bitting.

Well, well, well...I was actually able to pick a lock with the manufacturer's original tips using rear tensioning. Yes, pedhaps I don't know how pick disc detainer padlocks. I am not used to this unusual geometry. It's a balancing act trying to hold the rear pick on the bottom disc. So, I will leave the second original tool intact and switch tips to the small set if I ever need it.

Sharing is caring. Anyone with a lathe could clean these tools up much quicker than I did. I only have a drillpress. Do you have any ideas what DD locks the original tips are used for?

@@chriscapune7873 I ordered a 50mm by 6mm handwheel with knurling to fit over the 6mm shaft to offer some of the benefits of the RWB design without a hefty price tag.

Chris, just picked open two locks using the original larger tips including with these tools. Maybe they are not complete garbage afterall.😂

If you've got full tang broken picks, this conversion is a great way to bring those picks back to life. Based on current search on Peterson's website, 0.018" steel is only available in stainless steel, not Gov. steel.

Very nice, I did a similar project by making handles for my favor picks next I will follow your lead and design my own picks too Thanks for the video I'm a new subscriber and semi new to lock picking

@@johnnyo5993 Thank you Johnny for kind words. The tolerances on these handles will vary on the hole size, so you can't cookie cutter the depth and the width for the insert section of your pick head. But the width needs to be parallel and wide as possible. I haven't tried using 0.018" thick material from Peterson, but the thinner it is, the more tolerances matter. I want to make a more shallower hook for my next build. Then, I think I'll be covered as far hooks are concerned in 0.025". Feel free to ask me questions. I love tool design. I'm not that big on doing videos on picking locks. There's too much of it about on other channels.

@@laurenarndt464 awesome I will definitely keep you in the loop, thanks for reaching out...I'm semi new to picking as a hobby and have 50 years of R&D engineering background and co own a business that specializes in the use of Liquid propane Alternative fuel injection technologies and a motorsports division for our R&D /testing... we have a very nice shop full of state of the art equipment that can make anything we can design in CAD or 3d print metals and composites as needed so now I'm going to make a few "gizmos" supporting my new hobby when the machines sit idle🤙👍🇺🇲🏁🏴‍☠️

@@johnnyo5993 I'm jealous. I could do so much with equipment like that. Everything I do is using a drillpress, a Dremel and an 18-volt grinder with an x'y'z vise. Make sure you check out all my previous videos and shorts. If you like antique padlock collecting and key making, I wrote 3 books (see my YT icon).
