Author of the books, THE EXTREME ANTIQUE PADLOCK COLLECTOR.
Thank you for supporting my content. Support comes in different flavors. I have many unique processes for making keys for antique padlocks that requires special tools. In most cases, these tools and procedures will never be made public through UA-cam videos. I made the decision to write books instead. That way, credit is given were credit is due, and those who purchase my books are supporting me monetarily. I have put way too much research and development to just give away my intellectual property for free through a video that doesn't pay me anything. These videos ultimately get copied by other channels. And, I will never become monetize through UA-cam. So, whether you subscribe to my channel or not makes no difference to me, and I will never solicit a "like" or "subscribe" from anyone.

Perfect Grip, Anti-slip Pick In Action On Disappointing APECS Padlock
I don't have the statics to support my argument, but I suspect the likelihood that anyone would fall victim to a disc detainer pick attack is probably quite low and varies from country to country. Certainly, manufacturers could do that one little extra thing to really make their locks more pick resistant, but then it would be harder for me to make videos. And, we can't have that.
So, what is the treshold between cost to manufacture and piece of mind when 18 volt angle grinders are so prevalent? I suggest security flaws are a necessary evil to keep capitalism moving; those who want to replace the old mousetrap and those who want to sell locksmith tools. It's like one big Uni-party.

This Is Why I Love Collecting Antique Padlocks

Many of us find different rewards in collecting locks, but surely picking them open is not the only one. I don't think a collector truly owns a lock. He's just a custodian of his collection before he sells it or passes it on to a relative. I like having padlocks in my collection with original keys, but more often than not the price was more than I wanted to pay. But what about all the padlocks ...

This vendor claims to have 9 key pins in the cylinder. Yes, there are 9 key cuts, but 3 of them appear to be ghosts 🤔. I have yet to find where these 3 remaining pins are. Oh well, it doesn't make the lock more secure against my custom jiggler. This lock took a little longer to open because the last pin is a zero cut neighboring a deep cut. Plus, the core is spring loaded.

😃👍 I mentioned you in my Saturday morning Ramble that people need to get over to your channel and check out all the cool things you are up to with your DD pick tools! 👍
@@chriscapune7873 Thanks, Chris. How's your back doing? I don't think the word's getting out. Imagine having the ability to lock your pick into place and pick in what ever orientation you want.
back is ok for now. Thank you for asking.
I believe this padlock is a clone of the padlock shown in LPL's video (1610). I totally agree with his assessment about these lock's having low pick resistance because of no false gates on the discs. My rear and front tensioning tool designs makes picking so comfortable. I don't get hand fatigue from pressuring my tools against the lock body, and the probability of slipping off of discs is greatly reduced.
Nice padlock ... made in Russia? 🤔🤗🤗
@@vladinica6003 Made in China for the Russian market.
@laurenarndt464 I have a padlock made in USSR in case you are interested..😄
@vladinica6003 Most of these locks are rusted badly. I have a few myself, but I don't really collect them anymore. On rare occasions, you might find a bronze lock.

@@nomercy7161 Thank you. One of these days I am going to to take the roof of this lock and find these ghost pins that don't correspond to the key cuts. 😆
Lovely old thing. I could just Google but a conversation is better, what makes it a "story" padlock?
That is a beauty. And 8 levers as well, that's something special in itself. Thanks for sharing 👌
Unfortunately, my budget won't support Ebay. I wish I had more antique padlocks to restore.

That key is a work of art. Very impressive. Been following some of your old stuff on LP101 and your old channel to make a key for a Street Letter Box push lock. Seems there is no definite answer on whether they can be picked?
The Street Letter Locks can be decoded by inserting a shim between the lock body and shackle heel. Many collectors have pictures of all the the key cuts for various numbered locks. I never tried picking the street letter locks. I should try it sometime. It's possible with the right pick, I'm sure.
@laurenarndt464 yes, found a picture of the required key and made a temporary one from an old gift card. In the process of making a metal one now, it won't be as nice as the one in this video unfortunately. Was under the impression that the Street Letter lock needed really high tension?
For some reason your post isn't posting on my channel. Strange! Anyway, I would never tension one of these locks. Less with finesse is best. These locks should share the same characteristics as the Smith & Egge locks. If true, then you should be able to insert a thin piano wire between the lever tumblers with a small 90 degree tip and rotate it into a found gate. Once rotated 90 degrees, pull back on the wire to catch one side of the gate cut. Next, lay a feeler gauge over the slot of the keyway with wire protruding out. Finally, measure the length of the wire from its end to the edge of the feeler gauge. Repeat this process for the other tumblers taking measurements with a dial caliper depth gauge. Use math to calculate the depth cuts relative to each other. This technique works for Smith & Egge and many other push key padlocks.
@@laurenarndt464 yes, UA-cam censors my comments, it's a total pain. Thanks, I watched your video on decoding them. As I say I have made a working key from plastic and an currently transfering the pattern to metal. Was just interesting in Picking it as that is my main interest in locks but if it's not something best done I will leave alone. Hopefully I will post a video of it when made. 👍
Also, these locks have depth cuts at 0, 0.060", 0.120," 0.180". I believe 0.180" is the deepest you'll ever find.
But can it be open with another Зубр?
@@CHEpachilo I am not sure what your asking me, but I own three different 'Expert' padlocks. This tool opens all three locks using either a slow jiggle movement or rapid jiggle movement. You can see my other videos and shorts. The manufacturer was obviously not anticipating this sort of attack. I still have no idea where my nine key pins are in this lock that the manufacturer claims to have. As you can see it doesn't matter.
@@laurenarndt464 I mean it looks like this padlock has a spring tension on the bolt. So if you smack it hard enough it should open itself. Other lockpicker in youtube, McNally, usually does it with another same padlock. It already became a meme like: "this is masterlock 607. It can be opened with another masterlock 607. *Smack* *both locks are open*"
@CHEpachilo Yes, I've Mcnally's videos. This lock has a ball bearing and can't be displaced unless the core is turned.
@@laurenarndt464 Oh, ok. Thats a little unexpected from Зубр
@CHEpachilo It's just like an American padlock spring loaded cam and ball action. What I find disturbing are these ghost pins. I see these extra cuts on the key, but no corresponding pins in the lock. That's unexpected.
I learned something today about my design. Having a long pick shaft distorts feedback. I am talking about the length of the needle of the rear disc tensioner. In this newest tool I made the needle extend to the end of the inner aluminum shaft. This was a mistake. I shortened the needle to exend about 0.75 inch into the shaft. Problem solved!❤
I make a good number of keys for antique padlocks. And I agree on the great care you need to take to make any disassembly and repairs "invisible". That isn't always possible, so I consider the value and rarity of the padlock before I begin. In a few instances, I have purchased a poor condition padlock--some that has been "cleaned" incorrectly or already had damage--and use this to teach myself, and see if my end product (a function lock w/ key) has improved it any. Learning locks is a wonderful hobby and has endless fascinations. Thanks for the info!
@@peterzenner2020 Nicely said. Thanks for chiming in.
I think we all understand that sometimes LPL purposely uses and promotes his C.I. tools, some more discreetly than others. Good catch and your information is an excellent counterpoint.
Me gusta tu trabajo?
Muchas gracias.
I tried front disc tensioning this lock with a different tool. The tensioner kept slipping off the disc😖. At least one disc became set, and I felt the pick was working against me. I have picked several locks using front disc tensioning, but I always tend to gravitate towards rear disc tensioning. Every lock is different. You won't know what works better until you try both ways. The feedback isn't always the same between the two methods.
In order for this unique tool to work I needed to find the right tubing. Today, I ordered some precision 13mm OD × 6mm ID precision stainless tube, which was hard to find from Aliexpress. I only need about 15mm in length. This piece/bushing will fit perfectly into the handle side of the RC wrench and will retain a 6mm OD shaft (the same one typically found found in every front disc tensioning tool). I will tap a 4mm threaded hole and use a grub screw to retain these components. Also, I found some 13mm OD × 3mm ID aluminum. The outer diameter will need to be reduce somewhere between 12.70 and 12.50mm. I will insert a 3mm to 1.5mm reducer to hold a 1.5mm shafted disc pick. I'm not sure how I will finish the end of internal shaft for finger gripping. Maybe I'll add a small aluminum anodized thumb knob. (Edited for punctuation)
Interesting point on the videos. I've done a few vids where I struggle with locks but post them anyway to keep it real for new pickers and illustrate that not all tubers are pick Wizards so to speak. Out of packet picks I like a lot as that shows you haven't picked it beforehand. On yat topic I've just done my first out of box pick. Nice to see that tool working nicely. I do like making tools for lever locks, I think I'll definitely have a go at making a DD pick one day once I get into the DD locks. Thanks for sharing 👍
Nick, some channels are using "fun" to make money at the same time. Naturally, we all do it for fun, but some want to market us like sheep and pretend it's all about supporting locksport community. I don't make my tools to sell them, and yet I share my ideas with whoever. But, this guy from the UK, with absolutely no content on his channel trolled me. My video wasn't intended to upset anyone, just to show how you don't always need expensive tools.
I do love to see how ideas evolve👌👍
@@Nicks-Picks Thanks for be a faithful supporter. You're the best.
👉Hello, be sure to read my description.
Nice idea. I think they will turn out really well
@@PocketWomen I'll find out today. I need see how difficult it will be for me to turn half a millimeter off of the 14 mm × 2 mm aluminum pipe. I need to visit the post office, first.
Love all the tool making ideas you come up with!!
@@jeffandthings77 Thanks, Jeff. I think just picking locks and doing videos about them can become rather predictable.
Coming along nicely. Its going to look the business as well. Great idea 👍
@@Nicks-Picks Considering the cost for the entire set of drivers (about $15), I can't complain. I was hoping for 14 mm on the internal diameter for my 14 mm × 2 mm aluminum tubing, which I haven't received yet. The internal diameter on the driver handles measures 13.70 mm. So, I'll need to remove 0.35 mm for good performance between surfaces.
Nice padlock ! Cheers mate!! Greetings from Serbia

@@michaelsulwer779 Well, I'm glad you took the time to look. Thank you.
Thays interesting. I do loke the rubber band idea 💡👌🫶
Thanks, Nick. The same concept of the rubber band could be used on front disc tensioning tools as well, especially when picking in a near vertical orientation.
Your tool impresses me more and more, it looks solid and stable.
@@TuMayPicking Thank you. Remember, this tool is just one of two that I purchased from Aliexpress sold as a pair for about $70. I simply made them better. I really like the universal tip. There's no guessing about the tip length when rear tensioning. Someone will rip me off on my idea. I'm just waiting for the theft to happen.
Wonder what the difference in price is between that and a basic functional padlock? Have you seen more examples of it, maybe it was just a terrible bitying (devils advocate to there)
Your right, it is amazing how cheap some of these "locks" are. You almost could just use a pointy stick to open them.
