The only thing that winds me up about the union is that I lost my identity as an English person. I had to be British, while my Scottish and Welsh counterparts still got to be Scottish and Welsh. I'm 100% up for an economical union but I am not up for the shedding of English as my identity and never will be. England has no parliament whereas Scotland and Wales do. So does Northern Ireland. I'm against the attack on English as a national identity. Grant the English fair treatment. That is all I want. Either we're all British or we're English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh.

I only JUST bought this book after getting my feet wet with David Mitchell's "Unruly," which is a fantastic 101-level introduction to Anglo-Saxon history. I opened Morris's book thinking to myself that it would probably be denser and more academic but much less witty and engaging than Mitchell's, and I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that it was actually very witty and engaging in its own right. The older I get, the more important and interesting history seems to me, even if it's much harder to get my head around than physics. Morris's book is a fantastic guided tour of a period of history with many important insights to give: how a society collapses, how a failed state copes and how something new emerges from the ugly wreckage, how order comes from chaos and descends back into it, and what the overall trends of human behavior are throughout these processes.

Always good to hear an intelligent conversation but has this writer heard of Kent State? History book anyone...please lend it. At 19:48 he said he couldn't imagine it happening in the U.S. and making it sound outlandish that it was being considered in Iraq. Sadly the U.S. created that situation but the point of this comment is to question what he said. Am I missing something or is that inaccurate?

I read the book and found it to be well written. It does a good job covering von Neumann's ideas. On the other hand, the author ignores a number of disturbing incidents from von Neumann's personal life that call into question his personal morality. It furthermore gives kid gloves treatment to von Neumann's sycophantic relation to the American military, and shockingly, the book almost completely ignores the human consequences of the invention of such important things as the atomic bomb and the invention of AI. Ultimately, I found the author's perspective to be anodyne bordering on naive. Unfortunately, there is much more to von Neumann than this book addresses, and a lot of it is pretty disturbing. All of that is absent from this book.

If Scotland succeeded, they would use the EURO (not a new currency); and then they would negotiate to become part of the EU. I am not sure this would be on the whole beneficial as they would lose a lot of the 'Union's Assets'.

English people now regret quitting the EU by at least 70%. Work together we can pool closer with the EU than Scotland can ever be if they leave the UK. It would be as stupid as the English & Welsh were in voting--incredibly narrowly & backed by Putin plus Mercer, Facebook et al--to Quit the EU.

This is a great book. My parents were born in the North, my DNA reveals 21 % Scandinavian heritage. The way Brian mixes history with examining ( among much more )the prejudices against those from the north that still exist is unique.Fortunately ( because I escaped the English disease of a class system ) I have lived all my life in NZ, but through parents and relatives been keenly aware of my Yorkshire roots. In his quiet way Brian stands up for Northern pride. Well done.

Wish I was in a position to turn MY speculations into a narrative. I believe the Angles grew out of the remnants of the Germanic-descended 'Angarion (despatch rider's)' who tried to maintain the structures calling on help from kin overseas. Likewise Saxons were auxhilliaries- named from their weapon of choice who maintained sea forts and coastal naval patrols In other words the ' Romans' were Germanic and largely identical to the people coming in and had been for centuries since AD43 onwards. Additionally Pytheas in 300Bc describes two distinct populations one was similar to the later Germanic folk the other was like the Iberians.

Ok, any « analyst » that use the words « authoritatian » and « populist » as a degrading qualification is a clown or have an hidden agenda. So I won’t waste my time listening how fantastic are the nice and good « democracies » (which btw, even him can’t avoid to notice that their main activity is to replace the people they are supposed to serve (code word: multiculturalism)). However, geography don’t change so I’ll get his book, because in our world full of « geopolicians », no one talks about geography.

It’s interesting that England and Englishness was never defined by propositional citizenship, but instead by blood and soil. England was always defined as the land where the English/Anglish live as opposed to where the Britons or the Picts live. You cannot become English, you are born English.
