Here’s another great mark making tip: take two large glass cutting boards (nice and thick!). Dribble paint on top of one board, and smush the other board on top. Use a butter knife to pry the two boards apart, and voila! You’ve got two mirror images you can press paper on and take prints off of. (Best to use thick glass/ boards because otherwise it can shatter when you pry them apart)

Hi Sally. I’ve recently found you from Karen Stamper’s current Sketchbook course. I first watched your really helpful video about different kinds of tissue papers and it was only when I saw her interview when you showed us your sketchbooks that I realised you are in Norwich. I am up in Wood Norton (near Fakenham and Holt.) but currently in India. I started doing lots of monoprinting last year here in Kerala - mostly using local leaves, Indian fabric printing blocks and rubbish I found on the beach, with a Gelli plate I ordered from Amazon India. Couldn’t get one in the local art shops. It’s a great technique for the humid climate of Kerala where nothing dries fast. Back in Norfolk I had to go back to expensive-but-gorgeous Golden Open Paints (made in USA). Love your work Sally - and your teaching is so helpful! Thank you.

@LynnDuvall - Don’t know where you are or what your background is but you may be interested in on line courses run by Art2Life - the Creative Visionary Program CVP run by Nicholas Wilton from California. It’s an intense course - but amazing. Also the equally wonderful Louise Fletcher in Yorkshire UK who has courses ‘Find Your Joy’ and ‘Find Your Voice’. She says she may combine these for 2023… Both are active here on UA-cam and both offer free taster courses. Each course led me to find other teachers - a trail which led here to the lovely Sally Hirst.

Leaves and flowers are gals not guys. Very few Gelli print makers know this. Just kidding, of course, it just astounds me how many artists and crafters call supplies “him” - and all of them are women!

Sexism and racism are so embedded in our language it is almost impossible to avoid them when concentrating on something else such as teaching art techniques on line. Someone recently pulled me up (he was only half joking) for using the word ‘blackmailing’… It’s also interesting how much we are influenced by US slang and wanting to sound ‘hip’ or ‘cool’ 😂😂😂 eg ‘these guys’. I personally notice I do it when talking to much younger people - no doubt it has exactly the opposite effect and makes me sound even older and out-of-touch 🤣. Ageism… now there’s another thing…
