A new camera and the Cowichan Valley Railway
Recorded at the BC Forest Discovery Centre in Duncan.
The railway here is 36" (3') gauge.

I got a Canon R10! Little step up from a Rebel XS, huh? Well, that means I can make decent videos now, yay... This is also my first time editing a video, and I think it turned out decently, apart from my shaky hands!

Recorded at the BC Forest Discovery Centre in Duncan. The railway here is 36" (3') gauge. Today (July 6, 2024) I visited the Cowichan Valley Railway yet again! Here's a video of the newly restored Shay passing by a crossing. Can easily see the three cylinder engine in action! Apologies for the rougher video at some points - my shaky hands and a camera do not mix!

Recorded at the BC Forest Discovery Centre in Duncan. The railway here is 36" (3') gauge. Today (June 29, 2024) is, as far as I know, the second public run of this Shay after a lengthy rebuild process started about eight years ago. Here's a video of the beautifully restored locomotive leaving North Cowichan station. A little wheelslip action! (Skip to 0:20 for the slip, and 1:03 for the best wh...

Beautiful shay
Nice n I scrb you 👍♥️
ive never seen mark lose his shit like that before lo. funniest shit ive seen in a while.
Well done - clear views of the Shay's running gear arrangement, and of the 'stable-mates' at the Centre
Great work, Vallie. I like your editing, such as the nice "Jump Cut" at the 0:14 mark. Nice and smooth. I enjoyed watching this. I also get poor audio at that whistle-sign (your opening scene). I've finally learned that I get better audio of the whistle when it's sounding from a further away spot from me, such as if I'm at the Schoolhouse and the locomotive is at the Ranger Station building.
The first cut probably wouldn't have been there, just for the sake of those that would like to see the whole thing, but me and my dad were talking in the portion that was cut out, so I didn't want to include that :p As for the whistle audio, I'll have to experiment with that and see what works best for me. I was thinking for now I might be able to record the audio from my phone instead, because its microphone can handle extreme volumes pretty well, and I always have it on me so it could be convenient... I dunno yet. We'll see!
@@thundervallie - Experimenting is fun, especially when you get multiple opportunities.

It'S so amazing to see Hillcrest #1 back in service 😍
lol probably because the engine crew is distracted by their phones
I had to watch it a second time to see it dang that was quick
Nice video.
!!!Nice railway video, Like!!!
arrrrrrrrhahaha lol that's a side of Hyce we don't get to see on his channel, oooooh boy my sides are hurting bad for nearly pissing myself laughing at Hyce going nuclear, thank you Mason, if i ever have the pleasure of being trackside at the museum within earshot of Hyce I'm point at him and "ooooooh there's the conductor" hahahaha.
I heard the k-37 were supposedly supposed to be minimum guage...i hope he sees this
What's he looking for? It's got me kinda nervous.
Fish?
I'm not sure! They always seem to look out the cab window on the trestle, but I haven't seen them go this far before. Could be watching the running gear, maybe? I believe they're still getting things worked out on the Shay.
Every time I watch a Shay start moving, I expect a Navy oilers mate to swing in upside down doing his job.
Great video!!! Like me!!!
Thats an interesting cylinder arrangement.
Never seen a shay slip before.
Just came across this channel by accident. Congrats on the rebuild. A monumental task these days, (and expensive),. I'd wanted to visit there for a long time but it's a long trip from here, (Monterey bay),. Maybe some day. The roaring camp r.r. in the santa cruz mountains has the infamous 8% grade section, ( seems way steeper to me and a bit spooky ),. I don't recall slippage though sand is used. I would imagine going both ways. But it does get wet up there in the redwoods. Even from the thick fog. Congrats again.
Neat Mason.
Shays are designed to Grip the rails.
The degree of slip is so small, but so quick. I really think this demonstrates very well the track adhesion this particular locomotive possesses, even in wet conditions!
hyce being this mad is rare to see he's usually really chill
Mason, thanks for this. This looks to be an afternoon run (based on the people that I saw). A fun day today to see the Shay in action, despite the rain. ...and the rain gives the opportunity to see and hear what a wheel-slip is like for this locomotive. Cheers !
Hi Mike, this was indeed an afternoon run, recorded around 3:20. It was an amazing day! I didn't mind the rain, honestly, everything else more than made up for it. They did an amazing job restoring the locomotive, it's nothing short of incredible. Love to see it!
@@thundervallie - I wonder if I saw you there today. I try to say "Hello" to everyone that I pass when I'm walking around. I was wearing a bright orange high-viz shirt, and was packing a couple of tripods.
@@LowLightMike I think we passed by at one point then. I probably didn't say much, if anything, though, my social anxiety is pretty bad
@@thundervallie That's ok. I'm glad that you were out doing something that you love to do. I appreciate your video work :)
3:09 Hyce took that very personal
If i remember, one of the k class mikados involved with the whole *"lizard head stuck in the snow debacle"* wound on on the National railways of Mexico (NdeM) and was converted to be a standard gauge mikado, it was unfortunately scrapped in the 1950s. There are photos of it on the NdeM
Yup, that would be so, although that one was a K-27 if I remember correctly.
@@thundervallie I think that was the k class that was converted into a standard gauge engine by the NdeM
Thanks for this, Mason. That's a great location for seeing and recording that train.
you forget to start the clock?
if you're referring to the thing on the left side of the screen, that's for recording and being able to move your camera around, pause the game, and other stuff while not having to control the vehicle if you record it previously, i don't use it for "live" recordings like this video
@@thundervallie Ah ok so there's no clock?
@@gibbs677bg personally i don't use one for timing my own runs, but i think there may be one in the ui apps

I wish those trucks had the option of AWD. I can smoke your time on my funny electric 4WD SUV with tarmac tyres but those trucks take skill
Trophy trucks are not controller friendly. A wheel helps heaps. Nice control though on your part
It's cool you can hear the bypasses clicking just like in real life
This doesent seem like the stock trophy truck setup. Looks way too smooth. Suspension and other things were definitely tweeked
i literally didn't change a thing, could just be my driving style
I've gone over those bumps at 300km/h and you couldn't even tell.

kas saa olet rassmus ja su vena nimi on kristjan tilk
Did you make any adjustments to the tire pressure or suspension setup? I was having a really hard time getting any feel in my wheel when driving these
nothing but the paint was changed, this is all default, it takes a while to learn to drive decently with this thing
@@thundervallie I had a feeling, I guess it’s picnic (problem in chair not in car) lol. I’ll have to crank up the FFB and use a lower power variant to practice. Seems like throttle control is really important.
@@Evildandalo you think a million dollar trophy truck is running a steering rack that would send any feedback to the wheel when they're racing long distance races most of the time?
@MiL7z it definitely would send feedback, it just wouldn't be the forearm shattering force that it would hit you with if it didnt have power steering
@@tiagobelo4965 I should've said "steering setup" I promise there is next to 0 feedback. I have 35s on my sxs with EPS, TTS run hydraulic rams, same thing people use with 50+ inch tires and turn them effortlessly.
Samir, Samir! You are breaking the car!
Nice run. Love that throttle control.
nice driving
I just played this update for the first time today, I found that this new trophy truck handled much worse than the trophy truck of the D series, it's much less stable, what do you guys think?
I think it handles way better than the D Series personally
D series is a prerunner, not a trophy truck. Two different worlds.
@@tavaszigabor5375I’m actually wondering… what’s the difference? Are they for different terrain?
@@jackijackdarth1938 The prerunner is built on the stock truck frame and can be made with AWD. The trophy truck is only RWD on a complete custom chassis
