Trying out Coco Coir || How to Make Aroid Houseplant Potting Mix Using Coconut Coir

In today's video, i'm going to be substituting peat moss for coco coir! Peat moss is a non renewable source, so coco coir is more sustainable to use instead. Coco coir or coco fibre is a by-product of coconuts that would otherwise be thrown away. Its amazing that we can utilize this in our houseplant soil! Im specifically mixing soil for aroids. My mix is chunky and going to include coco husk a...

Good work, so encouraging. I am doing water culture on 2 orchids which I nearly killed! One has hardly any roots, so I am hopeful.

This method works. I have two orchids, one had no roots and a tiny keiki and the other had just an aerial root. After about a month, the rootless one's keiki has grown two slam roots and I can see another one during to emerge. The one with the aerial root has now grown five new roots. I have put a transparent plastic bag over each one, to help prevent evaporation and keep the humidity level high as possible. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Question: is this soaking method only for new terracota pots? I need to transplant many plants that I will move indoors and I have used most of the pots before in other plants in the past. I can recall washing them with soap and then bleach and letting them soak in clean water as a rinse end step and to remove any absorbed bleach; all these steps because of my older potted plants have been contaminated with silver fungus and they were all discarded. Do I still need to soak them after 3 years of not using them in plants? BTW the plants I’m repotting in terracota pots all sizes are mostly perennials with bulbs and tubers that can get root rot if they are over watered. I just want to make sure I don’t have to spend 20-30 minutes soaking one by one as I can not soak all pots together or transplant all of my plants at once. Thank you in advance.

Spectacular video. Starting off with showing your blooming orchid's recovery was such a powerful way to open the video. Seeing an orchid which once had no roots looking that good is an inspiration. It gives a lot of hope an optimism to someone with an orchid that isn't doing too hot. The way you show multiple examples is helpful. Especially how you highlight that some of yours have just a few roots while others started off with none at all. I will definitely be giving your technique a try. I got my first phalaenopsis a little over a year ago. I was thrilled when I was able to get it to rebloom. It was rootbound so i repotted just recently. Unfortunately i underestimated watering needs :/ the new media i used dried out MUCH quicker than the old media and my poor lovely orchid lost a leaf and almost all of its roots. It's a blessing in disguise though. As a result of this failure i get to learn about my orchid and learn from others! So excited for the journey of nursing my plant back to health. Thank you for your clear and straightforward video. Such a source of hope!

I stumbled across your video when I was Googling for ways that I can help my orchids to regrow their roots and I'm so glad I did. It gives me hope that I might be able to save them from having compost funerals. I am wondering, though, if this method will work on orchids who've acquired root rot from over-watering because it seems a bit counterintuitive to introduce water back to the originally overwatered orchids. Due to extensive rot, I've had to remove pretty much the entirety of my orchids' roots and I have them all drying out bare-bottomed on some paper towels. I'm going to give your method of root re-growth a shot, but I am curious to know if you've ever used it on overwatered, no-root orchids. Thanks!

Absolutely not necessary. I have 3 plants in terracotta pots and never soaked them before I potted my plants into them and I’ve never had an issue. Just wait for your soils to dry out and water like you normally would or when you pot it just water your plant generously
