The way the pit orchestra subtly enters is really cool. I think they come in while the trumpet is carrying the melody (after Donnie's verse), but they're not really noticeable until the bridge (where you can hear the strings on top).

In the scene right before this, the boys are all wearing jackets and ties with their shirts buttoned to the collar. In this scene, they’ve all undone their collars so you can see their dog tags. One of my favorite details.

I have watched the entire show about 10 times and have listened to this song and the closing song to the first act by Donny at least 20 times each. I have yet to make it to the end of either song without tearing up, especially Laura's closing Welcome Home. My father was a soldier in WWII but never saw combat because of a disability. The best man at his wedding fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Another friend of theirs fought in Korea. I had friends serve in Vietnam. Any one of these wars could have been the basis for this play because every one produced soldiers with these issues; whether you call is battle fatigue, shell shock or PTSD. My father, his friends and my friends from Vietnam never discuss what it was like in combat. It took my father's best man until the late 1950s to be able to sleep in a room with other people, including his wife, because of the nightmares.

Donny's tags falling out of his shirt by the end of the song is always such a good little detail I'm glad I've noticed. It just,,,, I dunno I feel like there is a lot of symbolism in it that I can't find a way to articulate.

I never really got the part about Jimmy until I found a deleted scene that made clear he is gay and lost his partner in the war. It makes so much sense now that his part is strangely vague compared to the others. His story couldn’t be told without endangering him

The anger and despair behind that saxophone solo is insane. I don't think that this musical is great, but the payoff for this finale is, in my opinion, one of the greatest in Broadway history.

Im preparing to be an ensemble member in this show, I don’t think its the greatest either but i think it does what so many musicals fail to do: take advantage of what you have. Tell a story that’s untold through a unique soundtrack. So many musicals just follow the same basic sounding music to the point where you can’t tell wicked from ragtime. Thats also why Hamilton was so wildly popular, whoever’s heard of a rap musical before ?

My father fought in WW2. He never told me about the horrible things that he witnessed. I was fortunate to see this show during its Broadway run. It shed a lot of light on understanding my father better. The emotion in Laura’s beautiful singing voice is incredible. Everyone did a great job on this performance.

I love how it feels almost as if every one in the song is on the edge of insanity. I love how unlike other musicals since every instrument has a character behind it every instrument has emotion and sorrow and anger out behind it as well. All of them displaying the characters’ struggles through music. It’s just beautifully heart breaking.

I saw Bandstand in previews, it was the first Broadway musical I ever saw after years and years of local and community theater. It's a funny little show in that I didn't like it that much composition-wise. There were lots of moments where the show felt incomplete or where the transitions were odd. But I swear it's been 3 years and it has yet to give up its grasp on my heart. This song gives me the shivers like my body is remembering what it felt like to sit and cry in that theater. Anyway...

I absolutely adore this song because you can see and hear all the emotions with each actor. For example, when it gets to Donny's part you can tell he's just trying to focus on the music and keeps the thoughts and emotions of war out of his mind. Also, the fact that they had mutes in their instruments was a really nice touch.
