Learning Chinese: Bargaining
Bargaining! You know that in many cultures around the world, what you pay for something depends on how well you can bargain. And bargaining expertise depends mainly on how well you understand the local language and your skillful use of terms to get the best price. Today, our hosts Will Feng and his buddy from New York, Marty, go into some shops and show you how it's done, and exactly what to say in Chinese to make a purchase you are happy with. Then Will does a little classroom repetition exercise to help you remember todays' key phrases and how to pronounce them. Cool!

    • @39thala
      @39thala 10 років тому

      Frederik Rasmussen True, but the way in which he speaks it 'fluently' indicates he has spent alot of time in China. Which is where he is in this video. Xingyi, Guizhou.

    • @HQDivinity
      @HQDivinity 10 років тому

      39thala Definitely agree with you. People can learn to speak Mandarin but it will sound unauthentic whereas this guy sounds very authentic when he speaks a second tongue.

      +39thala I also agree with you. I speak Chinese (you can see my progress videos on my channel). I don't sound like a native because I never lived in China or Taiwan, Haha =-D The same way many Chinese living here in the U.S. will never sound like an American but will be able to speak English. I think the biggest problem with foreigners speaking Chinese is that they always drop the intonations, presumably due to the fact that intonations are not very emphasized in their own languages. It takes time, effort, practice, and a very keen ear to distinguish the subtle phonemes as well as the ascending and descending intonations of the voice. On top of that, there are so many dialects in China, many of which are mutually unintelligible. What I mean is, a person speaking in the Shanghai dialect can barely understand a person speaking in the Wuhan dialect, though I confess that the Wuhan dialect may be closest to the Beijing dialect or standard Mandarin.

    • @shaolin89
      @shaolin89 10 років тому

      Totally agree with you about the tones.. Check my video on my channel, I emphasize speaking fluently with standard intonation.

    • @kiwifruitkl
      @kiwifruitkl 10 років тому

      Frederik Rasmussen I must add that sometimes Chinese people can't speak standard Mandarin Chinese fluently, but rather their voices may sound accented. Examples include the Shanghai people speaking the Shanghai topolect. I admit my own bias in my previous post about the fact that Wuhan language is closer to Mandarin than Shanghai, but that's only because my parents both speak Wuhanese, while their standard Mandarin may be a bit accented. To find an English equivalent, it's like a person in England speaking the King's English. The King's English is standard and proper. Now, English is a Germanic language. So, imagine that Germany and England are one country, and "Germanic" is considered one language. Then, German and English would be, in this hypothetical scenario, be considered "dialects" of "Germanic languages".

    • @39thala
      @39thala 10 років тому

      Many Chinese (from outside of Beijing ofcouse) have told me that Harbin probably has the most truly standard pronunciation of Mandarin. I've know a few from Harbin and I have to say, their Mandarin 'is' indeed very clear and beautiful sounding. More so than Beijing imo. Of course, you don't want to tell a Beijinger that ;-)
