Thoughts on tapping and tools of the trade
What size of pump are you running for those 1600 caps and a mile of 2 inch vacuum line
Cinnamon flavored syrup will be good I’m sure!
We think it will be. Thanks for watching!
Mind blown 😂
Guys, I agree with all Kurt said here. There are a couple of things I've done. Use a smaller bit (1/4) when you drill out a broken tap. If the hole is damaged for any reason, sometimes a softer spout material will still seal up in the same hole. Not that I like that type of spout, but in a pinch, most anything is better than drilling a new hole if it can be avoided.
That is a good idea. Thanks for watching!
Almost sugaring time again! +1 sub towards all of our goal- 1,000 lol. Keep up the videos!
Thanks for watching and subscribing! We have lots more videos in the pipeline.
Merry Christmas Sawyers!
Merry Christmas to you too!
Merry Christmas from Cedar Knoll sugar house guilford ct. Happy tapping
Thanks for watching! How many trees do you tap?
Just found your channel from Mill Gap Farm's live stream. Subscribed. Beautiful farm!
Thank you, hope you enjoy our videos.
The maple vinegar is so delicious, and this was such an informative video, I love to see the process!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Interesting! Never thought of maple vinegar before… I would be interested to see how this would work out for use in bbq sauce recipes
Yes it will be interesting to experiment with some bbq sauces with the maple vinegar. Time to pull out the grill.
My new smoker is ready to go!
😃👍
Any tips on getting sugar out of a long bank vs a short bank. The short one was easy but I just upgraded and now that didn't go as well.
Do you have a blank plate? If so you can use it to cut off half of your press, flush one half then pull the clean half and move the dirty half forward and clean that. Very hot water has the best results, as soon as your done filtering. Don't let the press get cold, I have done that and its very hard to flush water through at that point. Hope this helps, if it does let me know.
@Sawyersmaple I always use hot water. I could pull the clean ones, slide the syrup laden ones forward with the end plate and put the clean plates in the back and I'd think that works. I usually only filter as I bottle throughout the year so I try shortly after getting filtered syrup to the canner but then the press hits the backburner while til I'm done bottling
Hi there Kurt. I saw that you have your sugar operation up for sale???
Yes indeed, we are looking to buy property of our own and set up a new maple farm. Know anyone who would be interested in this one?
@@Sawyersmaple wow that's crazy. I don't know of anyone. I am on the coast in a small town called Gouldsboro. Long way from Jackman.

how many cfm vacuum r u running?
300 CFM and 27-28 inches of vacuum.
Cool!
Thanks for watching!
Hi Sawyer's Maple, why are your lines so high up? Do you have a bear problem? Thanks MGF
Hi Mill Gap Farms, We have three reasons for doing this. 1) Snow. Our typical snow fall used to be 10 ft of snow annually and about 4ft on the level. Snow coming in November and staying on the ground till mid April. Not so much in recent years, but we keep our lines high for the following two reasons . 2) Slope, we have fairly low rolling hills that we are tapping trees on and they do not always slope in the optimal direction and we need to maintain height over our trails. 3) Wildlife, Moose stand 6ft at the shoulders and much higher at the head and bull moose can have large antlers. Then there are bears and coyotes that chew on pipe. We used to have our lines much lower, but soon found swaths of tubing on the ground where moose ran through them and places where the pipe was under snow in big snow fall years. Short answer is snow, slope and wildlife. Thanks for watching and asking questions!
Great video Sawyer's Maple!
Thanks for Watching Mill Gap!
How do you clean that cotton candy machine?
We have a large commercial kitchen sink, with a sprayer nozzle, this make it pretty easy to rinse the sugar off the various parts. The head itself, I take apart and carefully clean.
I was wondering how deep you guys drill?
About 2 inches.
Did you have the link for the silicone tape you use? Thank you.
Here is the company where I get the tape from. www.ertape.com/
Great vids
Do you find by adding the rinse water from your filter press that as the season goes on your syrup gets darker from adding it to the back pan?
Does not darken up my syrup at all, but that's on my evaporator. Someone else's rig may have different results. Thanks for watching!
Thank you
Your welcome!
Ever check out DSD saddles with the hose clamp? Installed a 400ish this year, fingers crossed !
We have tried those in the past and found they get really soft after they have been in the woods a year or two. forcing us to replace them with a new saddle sooner then other saddle options out there. H2O's saddles have been great thus far. Thanks for watching.
@@Sawyersmapleyou found the gaskets got soft? Which H2O saddles you guys seem to like? What you like for silicone tape?
@@MrBigBEYEA For silicon tape see. www.ertape.com/ For saddles I will have to get a good video of them.
Keep up the great work and commentary!! I really enjoy your videos!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
What kinda cotton candy machine you running? The one I have I can’t get those nice fluffy large balls of cotton like you do I have to use a stick and then take it off that into the package
Its a Paragon 7105100 Classic Floss 5 Cotton Candy Machine with 26" Aluminum Bowl. The best way to make cotton candy is in a climate controlled room. We run an air conditioner and a dehumidifier in the summer months. Humidity is not your friend when you make cotton candy.
Im glad I have 1000' of elevation drop on our property
Thanks for watching!
Be careful cutting beach brush it will come back 10 fold if not sprayed with herbicides
It becomes a real problem there one central rt system not individual so cut one it sends up 10 more sprouts
@@BladesofglorylandscapeingGood to know, however we are not allowed to use herbicides on the land we lease.
It's my first year doing syrup. Ive got my lines all running downhill. When should I actually tap the trees? I only have about 20 im going this year. Im in Ontario Canada. Nice video
When to tap all depends on the location. Some parts of the USA are already tapping and or collecting and boiling sap. So its hard for me to say when you should start tapping. But since you only have 20 taps, You could wait till the temperature gets to 35 degrees Fahrenheit and is going to stay in those warmer temperatures for a few days or weeks. Would also recommend joining a local maple association, they are a great source of knowledge and can help tailor information to your maple operation and your specific region. Hope that helps some. Thanks for watching!
@@Sawyersmaple thanks. One more question. If I tap now because it’s running but it freezes back up, will I get more sap in the spring when it warms again? Does it affect the sap or trees?
@@RedRockMaintenance You can get mare sap in the spring, but it will be less. Larger producers can get away with tapping now because they have vacuum systems that keep bacteria away from the tap holes. The sooner you tap the more time bacteria has to plug up the hole in the tree, limiting the amount of sap you will get.
20 taps... Before breakfast, on the first day you think you'll get a good sap run.
What do you do this for ?
We make maple syrup for a living and we like to pass on our knowledge on the process to other maple syrup producers. Thanks for watching.
@@Sawyersmaple AA ok thx
Hey man, Im having good luck with the Les Mèches Bolduc bits. No more Cdl bits for me. 14k taps in and 4k to go this week. Stumbled upon your page, hello from Vermont

nice guys gl w your harvest this season

Great video, thanks for sharing. I've learned several things from your various videos! If you don't mind me asking where can I buy a sifter and paddle beater like what you are using with your drill? Will your Amish friend sell to others?!
Thanks for watching! Check out Sunrise Evaporators out of Topeka Indiana, they are the ones that make them. sunriseevaporators.com/our-catalog/ Page 19 in the catalog.
Thanks for showing your improvements. It's hard to make videos and get the work done on the farm! Kevin
Neat video Ms. Sawyer! About the only help I can offer is to use a tire to clean the culvert and do it as soon as you can. The sludge is soft right now. If it dries, it will be concrete. If we were closer we'd come help in the clean up and fixing the road. Never a dull moment on a maple farm! Kevin
The road beyond our sugarhouse is just a winter logging road. I think come spring we will have that culvert pulled out so this does not happen again.
Great video Mr. Sawyer! Thanks for posting it. Kevin
Thanks for watching it Kevin! Kurt.
Thanks guys! You are the sweetest to watch work together, I haven't had rhubarb pie since middle school but I remember how good it was God bless you my cousins. 😊💕
Aw thanks. You should totally make it, its sooo good. Thanks for watching and God bless!
I have to lift 800 to 1000 taps up about 15 feet. How many 3/4 lines should i use.
I would say 4. This video has given me some ideas as to how to make this better. ua-cam.com/video/ZLnmFfDZCVg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared So from what I have found out and understand. Lifting sap there will always be a loss of vacuum, the higher you go the more you loose. Ours looses about 6 inches of vacuum. Now the alternative would be to put in a releaser and sap tank and one line that you can turn on to suck the sap out of the tank. I did try a version of this before I went to the spa ladder. All in all, its not a perfect system but it gets sap from trees that otherwise would be more expensive to set up or not get at all.
@Sawyersmaple thank you very much.
@@Sawyersmaple Have you tried putting a check valve to help it from draining out and not freezing?
@@northernwoodsvlogs We have not tried a check valve. It will freeze anytime the temperature drops below freezing anyways. The only way to keep it from freezing would be to make sure its completely drained every day. Sap ladders make for an interesting solution but they come with their own set of problems.
@@northernwoodsvlogs Your welcome.
Yum! Now I want a stack of flap jacks
Flap jacks are really good with our maple syrup. We also recommend maple syrup in chili, on spaghetti, pizza, cooked carrots, vegetables and so much more. Thanks for watching!
That is cool!
It sure is. Thanks for watching.
I’ve seen some producers attach a 1/4hp motor or a cordless drill to the same setup.
Now that is a cool idea.. Thanks for watching.
Great ingenuity on making your own tool! My uncle used to make his own auto body tools. Anyone who can do that is ahead of the game! Thanks for sharing! Mill Gap Farms
Sure beats cutting thousands of drops by hand. Now that is pretty cool, not everyone can make their own tools. Thanks for watching.
