I forget how deep STNG could go on topics. A delicate topic thoughtfully handled.
I stopped watching television in 2005, to focus on school, and I have not had much interest since then. Having said that, I must say that there was a lot of great quality television in the 1990’s that addressed topics of loss, substance abuse, suicide, bullying, etc. I still have my memories, and clips like these really take me back.
If this were NuTrek, Data would probably have overcome the problem by crying a lot and then punching and/or killing something.
I failed to understand the significance of Kirk mistakenly putting his hand on the hand of the Navigator Station crew member. If I remembered correctly, the Navigator’s position was to the right of Propulsion Station (as we are facing the Viewscreen). At least on NCC-1701-A ☺️
Wow any humans who come to fully understand that 1 min 43s has discovered the 🔑 of existence.
The music is so fucking stupid
I could barely hear them talking over the dumb music that was inserted over the clip. Why add to something that's already great?
Star Trek is the truth
Depression is the cause of most suicides. And this entire scene incorrectly presumes that depression arises from poor cognition. i.e. having logical tangible reasons to live. But depression is emotional, not cognitive. And emotions originate in a part of the brain separate from cognitive functioning -the limbic system (amygdala, hippocampus, etc.) So a person with depression can identify, on his own, numerous logical reasons to go on living. Yet the same person may not be able to FEEL that those reasons are worthwhile and emotionally sustaining. In short, it is not possible to talk yourself out of depression with logical reasoning. The brain just doesn’t work that way. That’s why this scene isn’t as profound as it seems. Its foundational assumptions are incorrect.
Whats with the out of place music? Ruined it.
I did not see him there
Stop excessive editing like adding stupid background music!
Such a good show 🎉
They don't make 'em like this anymore.
That's not comparable at all, the fear of a different kind of death is no reason to commit suicide. The thing that drives people to suicide is knowing that the future holds only suffering, never ending, always getting worse.
That some delusional lib crap
The deep friendship between Geordi, a disabled person, and Data, an artificial person, resonates as deeply today as it did when the characters were written. Geordi suffers from depression, too, and if you look back through the entire series it's quite obvious. He is a mentor to Data, early on. Later, Data is a mentor to him. Friendship.
Great clip. The addition of the piano music in the background - unwarranted and distracting.
Why the fuck did you add music to this?
Stop stealing great footage and adding nothing to it. Grifters are gross. Boooo
Who says, Data did not restart himself 1000 times before taking the step to continue the process?
As someone who meditates. I feel like an artificial being, who's just FPGA emulating sentence. Would be aware of and kinda of manually activate their own neural pathways. Even though I'm sure with Data's stack thats handled by firmware running from protected memory.
I find it safer and easier to keep my mouth shut at work and just do what they tell me.
This moment in Star Trek was so amazing on its own merits that adding goofy music really just detracted from it.
> Machines designed to think certain ways are better at overcoming certain ways of thought than humans beings > What does our ability to create things that can easily overcome our greatest struggles show about us as humans?
The effects are getting dated, but this show's writing and acting stand the test of time.
The same thought process should be used before killing marriages. I wonder if women understand, since they take 80%+ of the no-fault divorces route. They hurt everyone else, especially their own children, more than any suffering they will ever know. 😢😢😢
This is a great video. While I feel Data's choice was the right one, I feel like it'd be insensitive of me to recognize why someone may choose otherwise. I pray that anyone that is considering this decision to seek help and don't let anything stop you from getting help to live a better life. You are "fearfully and wonderfully made." PS 139:14
Data: simply overcome the pressures of capitalism. Look at it as a challenge!
Why don’t they kiss already? Gay!!!
I just saw Lavar Burton as a vice cop in the Cameo Word Up video! Reignighting a neural pathway from 1985!
Love tng and always will , but putting a sappy soundtrack to it is just horrible
The more intelligent and self aware Data became the more he became acutely aware of his mortality and got depressed and afraid, the first two emotions he actually felt genuinely...
It's a great scene... Without the music...
This was a terrific episode. But the background music is distracting from the point being made. There was no need to add it.
i expected this to turn into one of those dumbass based slideshows
The algorithm delivers again! And TNG, oh how I miss thee. Are there any modern sci-fi shows that would be willing & able to explore these topics with this sincerity and nuance? Modern Trek became too much pew-pew punchy-shooty action, too little "let's talk about it". Oh well, it doesn't retroactively ruin these fine episodes.
“Data, his arms folded”
Annoying background audio.
TNG had a ton of really great moments like this. I missed quite a few of them as a kid watching it. Makes rewatching years later very rewarding.
Damn, that philosophically slaps!
Sounds a lot like puberty… and why its too much for some people
Data is do lucky he doesnt experience acute emotional anguish. The only times ive ever felt suicidal ideation were when I could not bear the emotional anguish I was feeling, to the point I just wanted to shut myself off. I had the more typical depression too, but I never understood why feeling numbness, emptiness, futility or anything but intractible overpowering emotional pain would make ppl want to die. I know it does though, and respect that ppl are different than me, I just dont understand the mechanism, because there were no thoughts behind mine, it just literally was like being in unbearable overwhelming nonstop physical pain and needing to end it. Except it was emotional anguish.
Data will always be my go-to to show how talented Bret Spiner is as an actor. Data feels so real and genuine. You really get a sense of thousands of complex thiughts and connections, while delivering a consistntly eventoned performance withiut being monotonous or stiff. The way he carries himself both in posture and in his factial acting speak to the character's depth instead of ever coming off as "robotic".
Outtakes from TNG with either Brent Spiner or Patrick Stewart are both great. The moment they realize the take is ruined, Brent starts "glitching" and Patrick completely breaks character with the silliest expressions and laughs. Tremendous performances from both of them, and they seem like they must have both been a blast to work with too.
I decided not commit suicide. Oh yeah? Do tell...
Why did you add the silly music under it
Say cheesey! 😁
The think character Data was placed and written specifically to analyze and reflect on humanity to make us think what it is to be human and become more self aware and raise our emotional intelligence.
