Remco Lithium Deep Cycle Range Launch 2023
The guys from REMCO, a new brand of performance touring batteries from Federal, offered us the chance to test out the new range of lithium deep cycle batteries pre-launch.
We put together a quick video to talk about the pros and cons of going lithium, and how our 200AH lithium deep cycle fared over the last year in the bush.
Shot and edited by Carlisle Rogers, mainly on Nikon Z6II and Mavic 2 Pro
Music by Honey Heroin
--------------------------
Lithium batteries have revolutionised the touring market in a way that I don’t think anything else has in recent memory. I swapped out a massive AGM in Dunes, my Troopy, for the Remco 200Ah lithium, and what it costs in dollars was swiftly recouped in performance and weight.
I picked that size for a couple of reasons: it fit into exactly the same footprint as my old 270Ah AGM, and it increased my usable amperage by over 40%.
In terms of the physical product, the Remco is solid. It weighs a mere 25kg. That’s a one-arm lift for me, compared to the whole body shaking 75kg lift to get the AGM out.
The threaded terminals were perfect for my long term install in a custom-built shelf behind the passenger seat in the troopy.
I’d had the new battery sitting in Qld for a couple of months while Dunes was in WA having adventures. When they finally met, I checked the Bluetooth app for the Remco, which is simple and runs flawlessly, and was pretty surprised to see the battery was still sitting at 98% power.
The Remco app basically lets me see not just the capacity and state of charge, but provides real time monitoring of battery temp, voltage, current flow, cycles and cell health.
After a few months on the road using the new battery, and I tried to give it a proper flogging, I have to say it is the most useable, plug and play lithium that I’ve used. In a world where Bluetooth still seems like a black art for many manufacturers, the Remco Lithium app always connects straight away and is super easy to use.
I pushed the charge state down to 1% a couple of times to see what would happen, running twin 95L fridges and my inverter for a day solid, and each time the battery let me go that low before disconnecting loads, and then charged right back up once I started the car or the generator. So I was getting legitimately over 99% of capacity out of this thing with zero issues. And after three months, the battery health is still perfect with the full 200Ah capacity.
I’ve heard that lithiums do lose some capacity after many cycles, but I’m not seeing that degradation yet.
Travelling up and down the Western Australian coastline, the lithium was subjected to some fairly extreme temps, from almost freezing down south to well over 50 degrees in the truck parked in the sun, with zero issues.
I have a storied relationship with 12V systems. I’ve somehow killed batteries of every description, from starters to AGMs to lithiums, particularly in their early days. And I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by just how invisible this new battery has been in my system.
The only problem I have now is deciding between running 50kg lighter in the troopy, or adding five slabs of beer to my packing list.

James Baroud Odyssey - Full Walkaround

One of the best things about this job is that some of the finest brands of camping and touring equipment trust me and my family to put their gear to the test in one of the harshest landscapes on the planet. Over the past half a year or so I've been testing out the brand new Odyssey rooftop tent from James Baroud, designed and built in Portugal to the same exacting standards that put this compan...

Back up north with my mate Anthony Bergamo from www.eastarnhemfishing.com.au, we check out the waters around Nhulunbuy and are rewarded with heaps of queenfish, goldspot trevally, brassy trevally, coral trout and more. It's a hell drive to get to Arnhem Land, but I fall in love with the place again every time I go. The fishing here is just on tap. This is living the dream! Music in this video: ...

Another question on this setup (I have the same tent) - how did you mount the awning? Did you raise the tent to allow the L brackets to go beneath it?

    • @desert_visions
      @desert_visions 8 місяців тому

I just mounted the brackets on the bottom of the rack, which helped because otherwise the awning would have been too tall to pack up,

Hi - awesome tent and thanks for the video - what roof rack are you running with it? And did you have to drill through / make your own bracket to fit the tent?

Great question: I'm running the Slimline II Roof Rack Kit / Tall from Frontrunner. That allows me to mount a full length Bunnings table underneath (with some custom alloy brackets). FR makes brackets to mount the James Baroud, but they were out of stock so I just made some fancy ubolts myself out of 8mm bolts and steel bar to suit the slightly wider slats of the FR roof rack. www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/au/toyota-land-cruiser-78-roof-rack-full-cargo-rack-tall-front-runner-slimline-ii.html

It's basically the LandCruiser of RTTs. Despite the deeply emotional nature of 4WD and accessory brand loyalties, some things are actually better than other things. And there tends to be a relatively linear relationship between quality and cost: you get what you pay for.

@@billygoatgruff2900 ...to you. And that's cool. The new Range Rover goes for over $400k. I'm sure we feel the same way about that. Given that they'll probably still sell a bunch of them, there's a case that different things are worth different things to different people. I have a kitchen knife signed by Chopper Read. What do you reckon that's worth? I just looked on ebay and someone is selling an axe signed by him for $500. That kinda seems cooler, but I'm not sure...

Sorry Carlisle i love most of your videos but this one just shows why fishing @ Dirk Hartog and others places has got harder every year for over 20 years fishing places like DHI because of freezer filler boats as i call them, they often take out a bunch of guys depth sounder tell you how deep, fish finder tells you where the fish are and someone with little skills or knowledge scull drags fish to the surface easily and just fills the freezer, i bet the baldie and the snapper you caught of the rocks @ DHI gave you more satisfaction than that freezer full of fish did.

Indeed, mate. Thanks for watching. We did have a bunch of people on that boat, so it wasn’t as bad as it might appear, but I love a good, well-earned, well-fought fish better.
