I really cannot understand why the South of Ireland do more to remove this foreign presence from the north, like the race and ideology changes drastically 😢😢😢
The provisional Irish republican army claimed to be the successors of the anti-treaty Irish republican army from the Irish civil war. They wanted to push out the British in the north then overthrow the Irish government in the south to establish an Irish republic. They also called themselves Óglaigh na hÉireann (Volunteers of Ireland) and claimed to be the true army of Ireland. The Irish government collaborated with the British in most cases due to this reason. It was recently added into Irish Law ( Not sure if its passed yet or been introduced that people who refer to provisional IRA members as Oglaigh( Volunteers), Oglach (Volunteer) or any reference to Óglaigh na hÉireann can be fined up to 1000 Euros as it is a term that can only be applied to Irish national army i.e. Irish defence forces. Now in saying that they did still have a considerable amount of support in the south and during Operation Armageddon, The Irish army planned for a military intervention into the North to protect nationalist / Irish areas but was shelved for varies reasons. Michael Collins also planned for a offensive after the Anglo-treaty was signed under the "Northern Offensive" but was assassinated before. When the Anglo-treaty was signed the British were sending over weapons to the newly established free state army in which those weapons were making their way to the anti-treaty forces of the IRA in the north which collins oversaw and was backed in his letters. He had hoped that both sides would come together to fight against the common enemy, the British. I would advise if your interested in that type of stuff to look into the the two terms "The Northern Offensive and Michael Collins" and "The Irish Army, operation Armageddon". I actually have a friend who joined the Irish navy years ago and during his interview he was asked if he supported any subversive groups meaning any republican groups such as the IRA/ INLA etc and he said he supported them but not their methods and was admitted into the Irish Navy. Also don't forget when things where going on the North it had a massive reaction in the south when bloody Sunday happened the British embassy was burned to the ground in Dublin. Edit : When Irish people were fleeing amass to the south for safety I believe it was Seán Lemass by memory but could be wrong went on a national broadcast and proclaimed that The Irish government could no longer stand by and do nothing whilst Irish people were been injured or worst. At The time his cabinet was divided over military action once again another research thing for you to look into. The Flagstaff incident ( I think 1967) is another good research topic. The British SAS were illegally crossing into the south and kidnapping Irish people on the border in some cases even torturing them to find info on smuggling routes. The Irish army rounded up a group of SAS troopers who were crossing in, one of them I believe by memory was been charged for Murder of an Irish farmer, the British Evac'd him out by helicopter.
