It is sad when "Christians" like Wintley Phipps LIE and create a fake story. The Truth: Amazing grace HAD NO TUNE when it was written AS A POEM that John Newton shared with his congregation on New Years day 1773. It was written to highlight a previous sermon. CLAIM: John Newton stopped being a slave ship captain after returning to port after nearly drowning in a storm at sea. TRUTH: John Newton was a christian WHILE STILL EMPLOYED as a SLAVER CAPTAIN and continued to do so for 13 more years AFTER his Christian conversion during the famous storm and only stopped being a slaver captain after having a stroke and could no longer go to sea. He believed it was a sign from God to stop the slave trade. CLAIM: John Newton "set his words to a slave melody" that he claims Newton heard slaves in his galley that was also "sung 'in the slave scale' (another lie)" ? TRUTH: In fact Newton's poem has been associated with more than 20 melodies. In the early 1800's it was sung to different melodies and each one gave the song a different name such as "St Mary's" , "Gallaher" , "Symphony" and "Solon". In 1835, a white American composer, William Walker, set Newton's lyrics to a tune he wrote in 1829 "Harmony Grove", he then altered the tune slightly paring it with Newtons lyrics and renamed the New piece "New Britain", which is the melody most associate with it today. In fact it was not even titled "Amazing Grace" for another 40 years, not until it was printed in the 1877 hymnal "Sacred Songs and Solos". CLAIM: "I looked up a copy of that song in the library of Congress" and "wherever it is 'authentically published' it says words by John Newton, Music UNKNOWN". He dramatically paused then says " when I get to heaven...I want to meet that 'unknown slave'" to the cheering applause from the duped audience. TRUTH: The library of Congress does not have a copy of "Amazing Grace" crediting words John Newton music to "unknown". The ronnies were the opposite of Dave Allen. I loved their sketches but not their news articles or Corbets chair monologue. Whereas Daces stories were captivating but his sketches were always an anticlimax especially the horror ones that started brilliantly.
