The medieval walls of Caernarfon aren't so much a visitor attraction as an integral part of the experience of visiting this wonderful historic town on the Menai Strait. Almost the entire circuit of medieval walls have survived, including 8 towers and a pair of imposing twin-towered gateways (at either end of High Street). In many places the walls still stand to the height of the original battlements.
The walls were built as part of Edward I's plans to turn Caernarfon into an English power base in northern Wales. Edward created the magnificent fortress of Caernarfon at the river mouth and began a planned settlement beside the castle.
The walls encircled the settlement and joined with the castle at each end. A quay was built outside the walls, out into the Menai Strait. Work on the walls began in 1283, at the same time as the castle. You can also see the old Roman Fort of Segontium

It is one of the best preserved and most densely occupied hillforts in Britain, its stone ramparts surviving in places to near full height and enclosing over 150 visible stone houses. The Iron Age fort probably housed 100 people living in about 20 houses. During the Romano-British pe...

Dinas Emrys

Dragons, the serpentine fire-breathing creatures of legend, are an important part of Welsh culture. The story begins close to Beddgelert, North Wales, a village best known as the burial place of Wales’ most famous dog, Gelert. A long time before the hound was around - in the 5th century, in fact - Celtic King Vortigern set about choosing somewhere to build his castle. Dinas Emrys was deemed the...

Cathy is a distant cousin of my family, this video brings our joint history to life
turk Arab mixed are the cells.... ha ha ha ha
I'm part Treorchy, part California :)
I don't why so many Americans of Welsh descent are not aware of their Welsh roots, It is only Irish roots Scottish roots, and English roots.
I've heard it said that the Welsh who emigrated to the US integrated so completely that they became invisible as such. I think it was George Washington who said that Welsh people made good Americans. 👍
About five of the early American Presidents had Welsh roots. I have Welsh ancestors who emigrated to America for coal mining jobs in Pennsylvania and as Mormon converts who went to the area around Salt Lake City in Utah. Apparently the town of Malad was once thronging with the Welsh. (I'm Australian with Welsh parents.)
To all Americans of Welsh descent, Please come forward, and embrace your Welsh roots.
I descend from Roger Williams in Rhode Island (1634 ?) His offspring seem pretty prodigious. Anybody else in that big boat ?
Just some facts wales is a underated place
Ahh as a proud Welsh I can smell the fresh welshness through the screen
That was lovely
Cymru am byth! 🏴

Wow...such a nice story...as a Welshman myself ...makes me feel proud...and should never loose connection with our homeland
Interesting her visit to the cemetery I once went into a cemetery in North Wales. All the tombstones were in English but the moment I entered the gate they all turned to Welsh.
Wow 😯

What a lovely story.
What a lovely video.
My grandfather moved his motherless children to Vermont from north Wales in the early 1900's. Leaving them with his sister, he went on to Chicago and all the opportunities that booming City of Broad Shoulders offered. John Roberts was proud to be an American.
I,m so glad Cathy visit Wales , i,m still building my welsh family tree
thanks to amazon.com after much research I found out that my 17th great grandfather was sir david Hanmer the father in law of Owain Glendwr two years ago I visited the village of Hanmer wales, spent a week there and met four of my cousins who were also related to sir David Hanmer. stood in st chads parish church where in 1383 Margart Hanmer married Owain Glynder. what a feeling just standing there and seeing the names of several of my Hanmer ancestors.
I don't know how the hell someone can trace their geneology to 1000. The furthest I could get was 1500s in southern France and 1500s in England and Germany
You just have to hit a prominent person, an aristocrat, their family trees are very well documented. But in reality, anyone who had a couple of ancestors in England in 1900 is descended from everybody in England in 1066 who left descendants.
Through aristocracy and nobility where records were kept. My Family Tree has lines that go way back.
Thanks for the post..my grandfather was welsh...nice to see others out there as well god bless you all
Brings back memories of when I visited the home village of my immigrant GG GF James George- Wolfscastle in Pembrokeshire. I visited St. Dogwells Parish where his parents, my 3rd GGP James George and Margaret Roach were married in 1842 and Margaret's grandparents (my 5th GGP) Samuel Roach and Anne Bevan were married in 1788. Then, where their house was near Lordship Farm (torn down & replaced, 1928) and the original barn. Unreal.
Nice to see that she did see where her family came from . North Wales is a lovely part of the world , I'm glad she was able to go there and see it for her self !
I too found out that I had welsh family thru research thru ancestory.com My mothers side are from hanmer wales. I made the trip of a lifetime to hanmer wales, I found out more about wales and welsh history MY sixteenth grand grandfather was sir david hanmer who was the father in law of owain glyndwr does not get much better than that and welsh history.
That was a truly uplifting little film.
My grandmother and grandfather’s families were from Wales, Jones and Williams. That’s all I know. My dad was born in Liverpool. Nice video.
My mother is a Williams from Alabama. They traced the family name back to Roger Williams who founded Rhode Island. I heard the clan was the last to leave Iberia.
Thank you for posting this. I've been working on my genealogy too. My great grandma always said we were Welsh, and my dad's DNA test confirmed it. I look forward to learning about the area they came from. What an amazing adventure. Thanks to people who share their stories via you tube and other outlets I have got to learn about the German Russions on my dad's dad's moms side. I've learned about the American Orphan trains that my mom's dad's grandfather road after him and his brother were orphaned in New York. I may not have letters in my ancestors own words but the general knowledge of the time and area has helped me to appriciate them all the more. I have a feeling for how and where they lived. again thank you for your post. It doesnt always have to be the people with thousands of subscribers to put out good content.
Wonderful
Reed is an Irish name not Welsh 🙄
reed is an welsh name ,not irish
Pete Jones nope, it’s Irish. I’m welsh born and bred, never heard of the name anywhere in Wales. In fact it’s a well known Irish Gypsy traveller name. Nothing to do with Wales
no its welsh
Pete Jones sorry buddy, there’s nothing (unlike yours) Welsh about the name Reed
reed is actually english... it originates from northumbria
Paul Robeson knew what it meant to be and to feel Welsh.
Such a nice change to see an American who doesn't claim to be Scottish or Irish.
I think a lot of Americans are Welsh, but they don't know it so they just say Scottish or Irish. I'm a Scottish American, and I know several others that say they are too but they aren't.
no one claims to be English either
While I know for sure on my mom's side I have Scottish ancestry because the Huntley Castle is from way back on her Huntley family. I suspect Welsh on my dad's side but couldn't prove other than my 2nd great grandpa was James Welsh Kemp and was from Poole England not far from Wales
@@2380Shaw the name Welsh is Irish Meaning briton
@@hod2116 no its not, it actually derives from a mixture of germanic and Latin. Wealas. It was a term used to describe the gauls by the Romans then later a term to describe "Western inhabitants of the roman empire". Anglo saxons started to use it to refer to anyone who wasn't saxon in britain at the time ie "britons".This included wales, cornwall and some areas of modern day northern England. Its even suspected that the word saxon derives from the Welsh word "saeson" which means "English people" but to be honest its probably the other way around. Nothing to do with Ireland or Irish language. Sorry.
beautiful
