Have you ever heard Shannon’s “How I Got Away”??? One of her solo (with guests) albums after Marzuki? under the tutelage of Sonic Youth’s producer, they went to NYC to truly crack the scene wide open. I don’t know the details (just a few) of that endeavor, before coming home and ultimately disbanding. Sufjan is a hard man to read, even 20+ years ago… I owe him another chance listening to his solo work. The type of guy that’s very intensely emotional, highly skilled, but would often either withdraw or come off arrogant: disengaged. Or just didn’t like me? Shannon S. released some incredible solo work but the world wasn’t ready for her. Didn’t deserve her either. I’d sell a kidney, possibly a liver to see Marzuki live again. Jaimie K’s deep cello could both slice and heal, and Matt H. was a master of percussion. Magical times. They’re all terrific people! Sufjan was the quietest member who ended up making the loudest splash. Shannon’s vocals are pure Heaven, especially backed on occasions with her sisters! It’s been 20 years since, but these were no “Autotune/Garage Band” phone artists. They were as real as it gets before everything became fake! What a rush of memories! I’d post their other songs, but I want their permission and blessing. It’s been a few years since I’ve spent days with their 2 albums on repeat, but I rediscovered them exactly when I needed to: going through methadone (for pain, never pleasure) withdrawal. #Marzuki (the real band from West Michigan, not the solo poser with the same name) has helped soothe my soul. I just want to thank them all! And flick their noses and earlobes until they come together again for a Lake Shore Drive (“LSD to locals) Tour.
