Great interviewer exploring one of the strangest, wildest minds of all time. Harlan was always a kick and a fighter. Such a mind on hyper-speed.(!) wild&wooly.

I love Tom Snyder. He was head and shoulders above the rest. His voice and his laugh were mesmerizing.

He's coming from the mindset that if you live in America, you should have the ablilty to speak English. He was merely stating a fact, not necessarily being racist. I will agree though that he did come off as a little condescending.

If you're living in a country you SHOULD be able to speak the language of that country, shouldn't you? You wouldn't have anything good to say about an American who lives in Japan and expects people to be able to speak English so surely Mexicans etcetera shouldn't be allowed to do the same?

What a thrill it is to get to know Harlan Ellison. I am a late fan but better late than never. I plan to explore his works and interviews. I'll get to know more of him in time. I like him ... he seems brutally honest and insightful and deliciously smart. Thank you for the post.

That was just the state of the network newsbiz at the time. Of course Coke (and other hard drugs) today are just for the Lohan family and the cast of "Jackass". The modern Hollywood is run by international corporations and the Insurance actuaries (who wager tens of millions that that star will live through the ENTIRE production, including post-production "looping") and the industry nowadays is as clean as a newborn baby's behind.

Tom Snyder - We should've cloned him, or transfused his RNA into someone else. He was a fantastic talk show host. Harlan Ellison - Maybe somewhat abrasive, maybe sometimes as charming as a canker sore that's had steel wool rubbed over it, but still the man is a cultural treasure. I loved his work in " Mind Fields ".

Snyder was the last non-mugging interviewer. And he kept Ellison the most civil he ever appeared. Two good guys.

Tom Snyder was a nice guy --- he never tried to provoke Harlan . If provoked verbally , Harlan would give you a severe tongue lashing .

Right on! Tom Snyder was born to host a television show, and late night is not as fun without him. Before there was political correctness, there was a long-standing adage, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Well, when in the U. S., a nation founded & populated by persons whose primary language is English (or a close approximation thereof--granted, not the queen's English), then English should be spoken. When I go to Mexico or Spain, I expect Spanish to be spoken & must conform therein.

People like to paint this picture that we're a melting pot. But like all the leftovers in your fridge don't make good meatloaf, so it is with our notion of "American Culture" We're mutts, and I think he was bitching about that.
