The inaugural March edition of Salcedo Auctions’ highly-anticipated ‘The Well-Appointed Life’ swept astonishing results across the board, making it the most successful auction in the first quarter of 2023.
Last Saturday’s live and online sale with Exclusive Bank Partner @hsbc_ph saw robust participation, as bidders crowded the auction floor and filled Saledo’s online bidding platform, achieving a clearance rate of over 80% for ‘Important Philippine Art’ - proof of Salcedo’s accurate assessment of where prices currently stand as the undisputed barometer of the Philippine art market.
Highlights included the phenomenal results for National Artist BenCab’s ‘Untitled (Two Women),’ which sold at Php 25,696,000 - the highest price to be achieved at auction for a work by the artist in recent years. Works by National Artists Ang Kiukok, Arturo Luz, J. Elizalde Navarro, and Federico Aguilar Alcuaz performed strongly; as well as preeminent contemporary artists Betsy Westendorp, Lao Lianben, Emmanuel Garibay, Romulo Olazo; and Ramon Orlina, who once again set a new world record, based on size, at this sale.
Other notable results included Lee Aguinaldo’s ‘Green Circulation #9’ that sold for PHP 4,905,600 - a record for his ‘Green Circulation’ series - and the noteworthy sale of Salcedo Auctions newcomer Emmanuel Cordova’s ‘A Habitat for Birds’ which sold at PHP 2,102,400.
The ‘Connoisseur Collection’ of the sale, meanwhile, saw the processional 19th century wood and ivory statue of San Vicente Ferrer, soar to over 600% of its presale estimate, selling at PHP 2,102,400. Over 30 rare devotional antiques also exceeded 200% of their highest estimates.
