Emlid Reach RS3 LoRa vs UHF Range Comparison | Farmland Roads
Is possibile to use it as a rover, with an emlid rs3 outside as a base and do all the indoor scanning?
If my rtk correction comes from a spot too far away, the correction given by two emlids base/rover are valid or not because of the distance too high from the network base station?
You will get degraded corrections from a base the further it is away from your receiver, our rule of thumb is you will add around an additional half inch of error per 6 miles from your base. So depending on the distance it may be out of your tolerance as far as your absolute accuracy, but your relative accuracy from your base with your rover will still be cm level. This video touches on those concepts if you need some clarification: e38surveysolutions.com/pages/gnss-simplified-for-beginners
Another, direct yet thorough video by E38 and their guy Patrick!!!!
How can I setup local ntrip if I have no internet for base ntrip corrections?
You can set your base maker using a single solution, see here: ua-cam.com/video/Au3BPxGs0aY/v-deo.html If you stick with the default coordinate entry method in your base settings it will average a single solution over 2 min. Once your coordinate is set in the base you can output the corrections from your base to your drone controller over local NTRIP. Your controller will need to be on the same wifi network as your base as that is how it is passing the corrections.
@ ok thanks, will that be okay for a drone to do a terrain awareness mission?
If you're referring to terrain awareness as being synonymous with terrain following, it will depend on what drone and flight software you are using whether you need RTK or not. The position data gathered with rtk will have high relative accuracy, but it depends on the accuracy of the base marker as to whether you have high absolute accuracy. See here if you need clarification: e38surveysolutions.com/pages/gnss-simplified-for-beginners
@@e38surveysolutions59 thanks, yes terrainawareness is what dji calls terrain following. Will look into it, thanks.
Ill add that this method doesnt work for p4rtk
Has there been an update in the FW recently? It worked this way around 6 months ago, the last time we had a P4RTK in hand
@ not since 2023. But I do know that the phantom rtk cant get corrections if you connect to the emlid hotspot. Need to have a 3rd party wifi network switch/router etc.
That's strange, maybe there's something going on with your hardware. We haven't had any trouble with this method using that model of drone.
@@e38surveysolutions59 negative, confirmed with emlid that there is an issue between p4rtk and emlid via the emlid hotspot. Have an email for emlid with that info .
Thanks for the info, that's news to us. Would you be opposed to forwarding that email to support@e38surveysolutions.com? Maybe we can find a workaround
Hotspot on base keeps disconnecting on android!! I would have to turn on my phone hotspot and share to base and drone controller which is time consuming.
Are you staying within wifi range of your base? Or are there other networks your controller is connecting too?
@e38surveysolutions59 Yes, the controller is within wifi range. The controller is paired to other wifi networks, but I choose the option to not connect to them automatically.
So when it disconnects from the base wifi it doesn't connect to any other, it just stays in an unconnected status?
@e38surveysolutions59 No, it does not connect to any other network. It just stays unconnected. I tried with the drone controller and android phone, but it's the same thing.
Just to clarify, the drone controller disconnects from your phone hotspot in the same way? Or your phone disconnects from the Emlid hotspot in the same way?
Plz do the same for PPK version
The bases hotspot keeps disconnecting on android.
Hands down the most helpful set of videos out there - This man is a legend! Thank you for all your continued help!
I'm still new to the RS3. Shouldn't the Reach be FIXed and receive corrections from NTRIP before the drone receives the Local INTRIP from REACH?
If you're setting your base with NTRIP corrections, then yes you will need the fix up until you have a base marker then from there it won't make a difference. We'll update this guide within the next couple of weeks with that information at a digestible speed.
ua-cam.com/video/J-0x6K6JhVw/v-deo.html
So I need a license and use the software to set it up to be able to use it as a base uhf radio? Can I get one already set up?
They are just off the shelf radios that anyone can program. The easiest way to get a license takes about 10 minutes to fill out a form and ~$400 to have someone guide you through and submit it for you. Also, police and fire use the same frequency range, so best to get a license because they will give you a specific frequency that doesn't interfere with them. The FCC can also fine you thousands of dollars if they catch you.
Okay well I have a topcon hiper v that can receive uhf radio. I would want the external radio to connect to a Emlid to output corrections. I want the radio to output the frequency my topcon rover receives.
@@connerperry Should be in good shape as long as your Hiper Vs can receive ETALK, TRIMTALK, TRIMMARK3, Trabsparent-EOT, or SATEL. That is what the radio can send out over 410-470.
Does it come with a db9 to usb c so I can configure in my pc? Or can I do usb to usb? Not sure if there is a usb port on the radio. Maybe on the side where those 2 screws are covering something? Could I program the radio with frequencies I already use with my topcon rover? Or do I need to get the license and have them give me a frequency that my Rover uses. Thanks
Is there anyway to get rid of the blurriness.
Yes, if you deliberately scan what you want to see clearly the gaussian splatting software will have an easier time giving you the results you're looking for. The vehicle in this example is the only thing we tried to capture clearly, even so if we slowed down our passes on it, it would only improve.
Bro just slow down a bit...great information otherwise
Thanks for the feedback, we should have an updated version of this at a more digestible speed coming within the next couple of weeks.
How do you waterproof the usb c connector?
You could wrap the connection in electrical tape
Nice preview😀
Should the GNSS update rates on the Emlid base be set to for this workflow (1 Hz, 5 Hz or other)?
We generally set our base to 5Hz, but our flights a short distance and quick, while 1Hz can be more stable for large area flights.
@@e38surveysolutions59 Thanks. What would you recommend the base logging interval be for the L2 lidar flights (1 sec)?
1 second minimum
Do you know if the latest DJI update (as of Dec 2024) for the DJI Pilot 2 has fixed the RTK update display issue?

How good has it worked
We've seen pretty impressive results, we'll have a longer form video on these scanners and what they produce soon.

Of course, we like to support our local businesses
It is dose not working with me. Is there anyone who did it? Kindly support.
I'm confused, how can you connect to the browser and search local.reach if your WiFi connection is with RS3 and not the internet?
Searching reach.local while connected to the RS3 hotspot is bringing you to the reach panel that is hosted by the RS3 itself, that is why you do not need an internet connection. You can still access that panel and the internet if you connect your RS3 to your wifi. The only requirement is that your computer and RS3 are on the same wifi network to access that panel.
Please do a more detailed review
We could schedule a time with you to do an in-depth review of this product, or is there something specific you wanted to see here?
For GNSS Base have to use Sim Card?
No
@@e38surveysolutions59he's using PPK.
I make a fly with L2 but Im disable the rtk correction, so my Gnss (emlid rs2+) recording the “.24O” file…now i dont have the file “.RTB” and doenst process my job…my main question is may I process PPK correction without .RTB file?
We haven't figured out a way to do this, from the documentation we have from DJI the only way to do this is with a D-RTK 2 running while you fly and pulling the .dat file. We suggest using your RS2+ as a base for RTK to produce the necessary files
Hey bro, great job!
I am also having an issue connecting to the Rs2+ via wifi - both on my phone and my computer. Afraid to do a reflash or any kind of restore because we logged a bunch of stuff that we need today. Is there a way to download logs over usb?
We spoke with Emlid about this and it turns out it is possible to connect to the reach panel via usb if you're computer runs linux or macOS by searching 192.168.2.15 in a web browser
Thank you so much. It was useful for me.
You're welcome, glad it was helpful!
What tablet is that?
That's our Vivid tablet: e38surveysolutions.com/collections/survey-accessories/products/vivid-tablet
I’ve been noticing issues like these with my RS2 when hot spotting to my rover and the rover and base are over LORA. Open field but some obstacles blocking direct LOS between the rover and base, rover struggles to maintain connection even with 37 satalites in view.
That sounds like it could be rooted in radio wave interference. You could use a spectrum analyzer to look at congestion on or around the frequency you're running your receivers on. Once you're out of LOS the obstructions between your base and rover can greatly affect your range especially since the Emlid radios are only outputting at .1W. If you have an RS3 rover you could use an external radio outputting in 450MHz Trimtalk to boost your range, but the environment will greatly affect your radio waves either way: ua-cam.com/video/Ow8PKua67a4/v-deo.html
Can you make a video for using this RS3 starting from the beginning, because I'm confused. The signal on the rover was unstable and it was difficult to get a "fix", especially under the trees.
If you're able to get a fix at all you're configured correctly. If you're having issues with the range on your LoRa radios you can adjust the radio frequency settings to improve your range. It's a guessing game at that point to find the right frequency settings for your environment, unless you have a way to scan the radio waves in your area. We're looking into a cost effective and reasonably user friendly way to do that so that we can get the best out of these radios in varied environments. We have a couple of videos that demonstrate how much impact the environment will have on the radios compatible with the RS3 as an example, check back with us soon and we may have a cost effective solution to dial in the radios wherever you are.
I'm stumped on this. My receiver won't connect to the castor service. I've tried everything I can think of and followed your tutorial to the letter but still won't connect. I know it's my fault but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong

Horrible horrible videos. Trash... pay someone else to make your stuff.
Is it possible to connect other GNSS receiver than Emlid ones (as base or rover) to the caster ? It works as long as they're NTRIP receivers with their caster ?
Yes, Emlid Caster should work with any receiver that supports NTRIP
Nice! How much it cost? Where can I get it?
e38surveysolutions.com/products/low-profile-reach-rs2-rs3-hard-carrying-case?_pos=1&_psq=low+&_ss=e&_v=1.0 $199
what is the solution if wifi emlid rs3 cannot be found on my phone ? Thank's to your information
Likely the root of the problem is the encryption level or frequency of your hotspot. The highest level the RS3 can connect to is a WPA2 network at 2.4GHz, while some of the latest phones default encryption for their hotspot is WPA3. If you're using an iPhone you would toggle on "Maximize Compatibility" in your personal hotspot settings, on android you should be able to select WPA2 encryption / 2.4GHz for your hotspot.
thank u v. much , please provide us with raw data link
Excellent video, but please speak up, speak more clearly, and slow way down. You're presenting very good and concise information, but the mumbling and excessive speed makes it difficult to comprehend. Excellent video otherwise, and please keep up the great work! Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback!
Great video. When you enter the base known point into Terra is that in WGS 84 ellipsoid? Or in the datum you used which was Nad83 I believe.
NAD83
@@joedouglas6923 hmm, since terra wants LAT/LON and ellipsoid i assume you are using just NAD83 and not NAD83 NAD83(CSRS) / UTM zone 17N since that wants Northing/Easting? I'm really struggling with DJI being so stuck in WGS84 ellipsoid and the work flow when i need gcps and output in NAD83(CSRS) / UTM zone 17N + CGVD2013(CGG2013) height
@SkyLensStudios 15:00 When you go to add your GCPs under Advanced > Accuracy Control and Check > import point file, you should be presented with the Format and properties window that will allow you to select your known CRS and geoid settings. Under Data Properties, selecting the dropdown for you horizontal datum then selecting horizontal coordinate system database will allow you to search for your known system. Then you just need to define the columns for your points. That should automatically change the output crs to that system for the rest of your data.
@@e38surveysolutions59yeah we have tried to output in cgvd2013 and terra seems to not be able to handle it! But we can fix in terra solid.
Thanks for the tip! Sometimes, there's a few more files a t the top, especially if you took a picture manually while the drone was going to its start point...The important part it to name the OBS file the same as the .RTK file.

Emlid flow or Field genius??
This tutorial is for Emlid Flow
Great video to explain the various mointpoint types etc.. but I'd be curious to know if one method gives better corrections/more accurate location, or if benefit provides quicker fix solution over others, like with iMAX vs Near etc
According to the paper we cited by Volker Janssen "In a direct comparison to VRS and FKP, MAC demonstrated increased performance in terms of time-to-fix, reliability of ambiguity resolution and accuracy for the rover, even though a lower update rate of 5 seconds was used for the network corrections (Brown et al., 2006)." www.spatial.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/129414/2009_Janssen_IGNSS2009_VRS_vs_MAC.pdf While both VRS and MAC perform better than a single baseline.
About time this video came out
I sure wish Washington State's WSRN was free, but they still charge $1900/year for a single license!! This puts it WAY out of practical reach for the occasional "hobby surveyor" such as myself (I am licensed, of course ;) )
I can not understand the purpose of this work? Do you mean by this method, we do not need to set up our base on the known point, and we can set up our base everywhere we decide?
This is just another way to send corrections from your base to your rover. For example this could be used to extend your rover range if the LoRa radios weren't reaching far enough or if you wanted to set up a permanent base.
Do this test again in the Spring with full grown vegetation.
Whats the furthest distance the rover can get from the base before accuracy becomes an issue? 10 miles? 30? 100?
Roughly, every 6 miles you'll see about a half inch of error introduced
where do you get the config tool itself?
You should receive an email with the download link on purchase:alltopo.com/out/Harxon/
@@e38surveysolutions59 do you happen to have the rover radio config tool? HX-DU1603D? With SATEL protocol?
Hi Joe! Quick question. When you set the point via corrections, your pole height was 2 meters (6.562 ft). But when you entered the base manually, the pole height displays 7.002 feet. Why the difference and does it affect the NTRIP output to the rovers (drones)? Should you change that pole height? Or is it even an option to do so? Thanks!
@imadroner Emlid Flow adds the internal antenna offset (134mm) of the receiver automatically which is the difference you're seeing. It will affect your elevation, but if your pole height is correct that additional offset will bring the antenna to the correct height for the phase center of your base. In most 3rd party software you would need to manually input this offset.
Thanks Joe! I understand.
