Not in MY Gayborhood: Dupont Circle and the Rise of the Vicarious Citizen. Author Talk
Professor Theo Greene of Bowdoin College discusses his new book "Not in MY Gayborhood: Gay Neighborhoods and the Rise of the Vicarious Citizen."
A book about LGBTQ neighbors of Dupont Circle?!?
In celebration of LGBTQ History Month, Rainbow History Project will host an author talk with Professor Theo Greene, Ph.D., Chair of the Sociology Department of Bowdoin College.
Dr. Greene's latest book project, "Not in MY Gayborhood: Gay Neighborhoods and the Rise of the Vicarious Citizen," explores the persistence of iconic gay neighborhoods in Washington, DC, through acts of ephemeral placemaking by nonresidents (vicarious citizens). It is based on several years of extensive field research in Washington and interviews with LGBTQ residents and visitors of Dupont Circle.
Dr. Greene will present an overview of his book in dialog with RHP's Director of Archiving, Vincent Slatt, and questions from the audience.
You may read Dr. Greene's bio online:

BEAT: The Performance Poetry of Chasen Gaver

A video by Jamie Walters, VEE Productions, 1988. This compilation of performance videos and interview clips, by and about poet Chasen Gaver, is an interesting and offbeat look at the way one man gets his artistic and social messages across. Using a combination of Motown and punk rock, everyday props and precisely orchestrated delivery, Chasen has fun (often biting fun) with humankind's foibles ...

Why is it that no one talks about this disease until they get it, i can not wrap my head around it
If he died at 22, he must have been incredibly young when he first got it. So sad 😞.
Why isn't Chrissy ex,boyfriend taking care of him?
Does anyone know if Randy was HIV positive here, and if so, did he know he was?
My Uncle live with Hiv Aids in 1981 and still alive ,its rare 🙏🏼but true ,and the last 20 years we have good medication
Dr. Fauci looks taller in his younger years lol.
Nowadays Fabian would end up in prison for doing what he did.
THERE IS NO CURE IN 2024 NO CURE BUT THE LEFT ,ORO WOKE MEDIA JEEP PLAYING COMMERCIALS ON TV THAT THERE US NOW A GREAT SUPER Pill THAT SAVES US FROM AIDS , TELL YOUR Kids ITS ALL A LIE THERE US NO CURE AND THEY WILL DIE , THE SCHOOLS WONT TELL OR TEACH THE TRUTH
NOW THAT THEY HAVE DISCOVERED THAT HIV BECOMES Part OF HUMAN DNA I BELIEVE ITS SLOWLY MUTATING INTO A FINALITY VIRUS THAT NO DRUGS CAN Slow DOWN IT WILL EVENTUALLY KILL US ALL
My Uncle have Hiv Aids in 1981 ,and still alive ,lucky man he was ,later he get good medication 🙏🏼
It's now 2024 still No cure and in the United States we have 1.2 million positive cases and another 13%that have HIV and don't know it, and now the left and medie make it look cool to be gay ,Aids will mutate and be an epademihc again, protect our youth from the new woke AGENDA
2:51 "Chris" was in MEN magazine at least once just before this video was made. I used to buy it in my early 20's. I am guessing they have all passed on... So much has changed for the better. I was in the SF area then and at 18, 19, 20, 21 how survived and did not get this I don't know. Tested many times back then and many times later, still negative at 59. Have a lover for 38 years now. So many good people gone...
Is this Benny from Benny and Joon
I see Jim passed away that same year- 1994.
I just don't understand how this far into the epidemic people were still getting infected! By 1983 when I was a 17 year old gay man my doctor was telling me what not to do. It was all over the news.... why did this continue? Did people think it would not happen to them?? I am a versatile male, have been since I was 19 in 1984 in Oakland, CA, but certain things need covered when doing certain things! I would have never thought not "suiting up" and asking my partner too as well! Oh a happy note, there sure are very handsome bearded men in this video!
🙏😰☦️
I will just never understand how when this disease has been in the news heavily since 1983/1984 that people continued to have unsafe sex with others and get infected into the 1990's! I will never understand that! When I was 17 in 1983 in San Leandro, CA my doctor was telling me then what was OK and what not to do, thank goodness I listened to him! Never would I have sex with someone I did not know! We are all different and for that I am also thankful!
I watched this as a kid who didn't he was gay but kind of did and it was super scary and depressing. I rewatched it tonight for the first time since and thought I had a handle on things until I got to the credits and in the local news preview there is breaking news of the Chernobyl disaster and now I am like ugh. The 80s were a depressing time!!! Lol.
CleveJ🤮
i can understand his dad's initial reaction to his son being gay and then finding out he has aids, but at least he came good at the end looking after his son the best he could..
That is one disease that fortunately there was a prevention for it
Abstinence
I wonder what the mental and physical toll of being a doctor and constantly seeing young, well people slip away slowly or quickly. If you're a person who really connects with people, that constant sadness or dread HAS to take a toll.
Whatever happened to Bernie Castagnola? The priest
Respect for Robert!!! Such a sweetheart. ❤
Such a handsome fella. Wonder if his mother was white or vice versa
I would like to know more about baby amar
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It’s something to think I was on 3 months old when this came out. The gay community has weathered storms. I am thankful for all the gay people that paved the path for my generation ❤
People were terrified of it especially at the beginning. I remember Joan Rivers said that when she was out at a restaurant or a bar - she would only order a drink out of a can or bottle - not a glass that needed to be re-washed. And she's so gay friendly.
You can tell this family loved a lifetime in a few short years may they all rest in peace.
God either does not exist or he hates us with a passion! all these poor, innocent people dying in this horrible way due to no fault of their own in such pain and discomfort, and I mean everyone who had/has aids. God you're dead when I come up there I'm telling you.
I don't care who you are. If there were only sodomites in this world, the human race would cease to exist. Fast forward 40 years. No one can tell you what a woman is. This is today's reality. Suffragettes wanted the vote, today's woman is fighting for rights of their basic sex. They died because of men and their sexual deviancy. I don't give a shit about any comments.
44 mins in mom smoking cigarette in hospital. Different Era
35 years later.. we live. xo
OH MY!! That little boy is the most beautiful child I have ever seen in my life. When I got to the part of the video where Dad said - my baby boy is dying, my heart sank to the bottom! Now I am soooo sad.
We had a friend who died of AIDS years ago we had no idea until years later when we found out
como se enteraron?
Married bisexual men were a huge danger, they killed their wives with their reckless behavior. Fact.
I’m not gay nor have I ever known anyone with aids but I fall asleep to this every night. 😊
The US Government has been and is still notorious for politicizing public health.
In some documentaries, this man is portrayed as a hero. He was FAR from that. He was one of the mass spreaders of AIDS and did it selfishly and knowingly even after he was told and literally pleaded with not to. This POS infected and killed hundreds of people and knew it.He was a narcissist, and he knew he was killing people. I'm appalled by this man.
What a disgusting narcissistic man
I wonder what happened to that girl that sang Amazing Grace at the end .
I am so lucky to not be gay
Suzi died just a couple of months after Freddie Mercury was finally diagnosed with AIDS; the things going on around the world that many of us didn't know about, much. I'm glad she had support and love. I imagine many die/died alone with all that pain and fear.
They didn't start out with much support. Vincent had to close down his management company because of others ignorance wasting his time, and there was a lot of fear when he tried to get Troy into preschool. This doco changed alot of misconceptions in the public arena at the time... I grew up in hospital with Troy, and I saw how they were treated in the early days. The 2nd doco A Kid Called Troy was incredible... It was the public efforts of the Lovegrove family which calmed the storms of fear and ignorance, and opened the doors for love and understanding. Such a different scenario today...
Poor Vince burned to death in a car accident in 2012. How can one family have so much misfortune?
We all make our choices in life.
Thank you so much for posting this, it's the only copy I've managed to find in decades.💚
Cleve Jones is great American civil rights leader.
Sooo sad ! I was 17 years old, when i saw this movie the first time ! I just came out several weeks before and thought : " Now, my life is starting to get funny, full of new friends and a boyfriend....." After this movie i was depressed !
