The potentiometer is actually a component that I very rarely every see spontaneously fail. If you have a failed potentiometer, you like have some shaft damage as well. The shaft is something that actually CAN'T be replaced in the field, due to positioner certifications.

This is a decent video. Often the AO wires are hiding under the main board, requiring you to remote the main board screw to find them (which is pretty simple). This video doesn't mention that you might need to calibrate the AO card via HART in order for it to read properly. If your positioner was ordered with AO installed, this calibration was done at the factory. This is NOT something that is taken care of by doing a quick-cal. You'll need to communicate through HART and perform an analog output calibration (either with a handheld, or via ValveSight on a computer). These pieces of software have calibration instructions built in, so it should be pretty simple from there.

One thing that this video fails to mention is that the potentiometer can be installed incorrectly if you aren't observing the rotation of the potentiometer shaft. There is a 50-50 chance that you could install your potentiometer 180° out of spec. Make sure you observe the small divot on the side of the shaft of the potentiometer. This divot needs to be rotating underneath where the wires come out of the potentiometer during operation. Otherwise, it will go out of range and won't work properly.
