Real Guns vs Prop Guns - Which guns to use on a movie set?
We compare several prop guns with the real guns and discuss how to turn real guns into non-firing prop guns.
There is no question, a non-firing prop guns is ever going to look as real as the actual real gun. Of course, prop guns are used for safety issues.
But what is a prop gun? Is it a non firing replica? Or is it a gun that has been disabled and cannot be fired?
In our productions, we like to use actual guns that have been disabled because they give us the best look and most realistic action.
There are many ways to disable real guns, but the simplest is just by removing the firing pin.
Without a firing pin, the primer in the bullet will not discharge.
Of course, you should never have real bullets on set even with a disabled gun. And fake bullets should be clearly marked if used at all.
There is literally no difference between using a real gun that has been professionally disabled than a cheesy prop gun.
Other options include using antique guns that no longer have ammunition available such as pin fire guns.
Most accidents occur because of the use of blanks. But blanks are in fact live rounds with the lead bullet removed. You still discharge a huge force from the barrel and risk injuring someone or killing someone.
With today's CGI and editing software, there is really no reason to use blanks.
The point of this video is to inform people that a properly disabled gun is in fact a prop gun. Which is much different that using real guns and blanks, because that is not only dangerous, it is just plain stupid.

Cheapest 500 watt Video Light - It's Under $50

Building a Prop Couch for Stage or Studio
Переглядів 12921 день тому
We needed a couch for our studio as a prop, but the one we had was too heavy and difficult to more or store. So we ripped out the insides, added wheels and made it usable and convenient. This is pretty common with props, taking all the heavy parts out and creating something that can be easily moved on and off state or studio set. Now it is quite easy to convert our small studio from a bedroom t...

      I would recommend contacting a metal supply place and getting 1.25" schedule 40 aluminum pipe. I want to say that it is about $120 for 12'. Some people use metal electrical conduit which is half the price. As long as it is smooth and rigid, any pipe will work. What do you think of the dolly?

      I actually like the cheap GideGear track with a dolly and skate wheels. Do not get the Glide Gear wheels, but having a tripod that you can push at any height level over light weight tracks is great. The track is light and will not bump like the heavier track with bigger gaps. However, that is for one person at one level, unless you add a jib to the tripod. If you need a camera man on a dolly, we still have not found a good budget option. We were hoping the proaim track would be that solution. Proaim contacted me after they saw video and they are working on improving the tracks. When they do, it should be much better.

      @@mrdogpoopstudios yeah I know, sometimes you gotta learn the hard way. I can probably still make use of it and put an insert into one end and use bolts to hold it in place. Just need to find a way so that the female tube won't budge when getting tightened

      I thought about that. I was considering using aluminum duct tape, which I love, to bridge the gap. Have not tried it, but something like that might help. This is a link, I think it is the right stuff ( www.lowes.com/pd/3M-3M-8482-Professional-Grade-Flexible-HVAC-Sealing-Tape-1-88in-x-30yds/5001605999 ). Don't get me wrong, it is usable, I just don't think for $700 that it is worth the money. They have other track, but it is more expensive. But I would avoid Proaim track, because if one is bad then how can we expect the other to be good? I was really disappointed. But I will probably use it as speed rail to make a large scrim since it is standard 1.25 schedule 40 pipe. Just need the corners and I am good to go. A bit more expensive than plain aluminum pipe, but not a total loss.

    Hi and good video, the flexing problem is lack of triangulation. You need to triangulate the long speed rail to the shorter speed rail in which you have the camera mounted too.

    • @mrdogpoopstudios
      @mrdogpoopstudios 2 місяці тому

      Yeah, I figured that. The issue is, doing it and keeping it light enough to be usable and not creating shadows. We tried a second version with lighting truss but it was too heavy to move and still had flex. My original thought was to use speed-rail fittings and get 45° fittings to brace the top and side rail. But it would not solve the side to side floppyness. I was thinking about putting a square in the center of each pole and connecting each corner with each end with cable. It is a common design on large booms and might work, but it is going to take a bunch of time and money and at the moment, the project is on hold. It works well at 5'-6' just not at 10'.

      @@mrdogpoopstudios The rig and effect you get can look very good, but as a key grip the rig only makes sense to build on a small scale. The bigger you go with a rig such as this the more crew, budget etc you will need. NOT TO MENTION SAFETY.

    • @mrdogpoopstudios
      @mrdogpoopstudios 2 місяці тому

      @@recardosands9948 Yeah, that is true and we were trying to figure out how to manage the weight and span. One idea was a hand crank or electric drive that would allow a smooth safe arcing motion. But first, we need to get the stability issue worked out. Safety was definitely a concern when we started mounting it to the dolly and the dolly was rolling. All reasons it is on the shelf right now except for smaller scale.

    Great videos, been binging them all evening, hopefully you aren't also cursed with the UA-cam algorithm burying videos for too long. If you aren't aware of them lookup Pica markers, they're amazing for marking holes, and the small tip is just better for writing with overall.

    I already love this system. Wish there was this dolly without a kit and without a ridiculously high shipping price in Europe though. Could you show how it performs on extreme long focal lengths, for example if I wanted to use it on a concert? Also would be nice to make some automation system for continuos side to side slide
