Little song I wrote on a 1950's harmony Stratotone (I think). If it's a real one, it's been refinished, had its neck reset, and who knows what else but it's my little butterfly. I didn't know what hand pain was til I played this thing
being , a b-bender song

Original tune for those who wanted to hear some more of the b-bender mod. Let's get this out of the way- No the video doesn't sync with the music. It turns out that's not that easy... and also I can't play that well. On the plus side, it's free.
Tutorial to make the hipshot into a palm lever
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 роки тому
Some have asked how to make the palm lever in my other video. All hand tools and the parts can be picked up at Home Depot or somewhere like that. As you'll see, I'm no craftsman. If I can do it, anybody can. Supplies: - 1/2 x 1/8 aluminum bar stock (or steel) - #8-32 thumbscrews in different lengths (or just get the long ones and cut them to size as I did) - springs from ball point pens, but on...

sometimes, after work, you have to try really hard to come up with a reason to go in the garage and use the tiny lathe: I need this thing. For this song. It'll only take me a minute. I'll clean up after. You can't buy one. Nobody sells them, there's no profit in it. You have to make them.
Modified Hipshot B Bender for palm lever use
Переглядів 67 тис.4 роки тому
Couldn't use the hip bar that well but like the long travel compared to the Hipshot palm lever that they sell. Bent some steel flat stock and drilled a few holes in it and got this, which I like. Casual guitarist new to string bending, so yeah, playing could be better. Working on it

DIY b bender test

test of the diy B-Bender. I have no idea how to use a b-bender yet, this is just to show that it works
Great work, man !!
Check out the Peters b and g benders. About $100 and easy install.
This is one of my favorite videos on UA-cam. Hell yea dude. I want one
That is some of the most beautiful playing i’ve ever heard i just want you to know that someone really appreciates this video
😎
That's amazing! I've been thinking about how to do this myself and the idea of modifying a bigsby had occurred to me. Nice to see someone has already had success with that. Minor pedantry, you say you have yours set to a step and a half, but it's quite audibly going up by just 1 whole step.
Dude! That’s awesome! How did you bend the steel stock? I do woodworking, but don’t do much metal working.

well done
That guitar's. Awesome!
Thanks for sharing. I found it enjoyable and inspiring to keep making stuff with my SL1000
This turns me in!
DUDE THAT SOUNDS SO CLEAN! I respect the crap out of you being able to play short riffs and sing at the same time
Thanks! It's just the result of 30 years playing the same 3 chords
My base arrived today, and I see what you mean by needing some machining. First I had to clip off the string posts, and sand them flush. The Bigsby b lever has a 3/8" hole. The shaft for the base is just a tad over that. So, with my trusty drill press, file, and different grades of wet/dry paper I honed and polished it down to size which really didn't hurt its application at all. I made some .032 thin Teflon washers and put it together with the "O" rings. It fits. Now, to make a lever which is no problem, file small grooves in the shaft to hold the "O" rings on each side of the lever to hold it in place, drill and tap for the allen head set screws, mount the mess(ha) to my Tele add the b string, and I'm in business. I have about $45 invested in it. $30 ($20+$10 fors/h and tax) for the base, and the rest in screws, "O" rings, and Teflon washers. It sure beats the mega bucks the big makers want. I want to thank you for posting this, and if you don't mind, I'd like to share it with some of my Tele friends who can't afford the $$$$$ for a pro bender. By the way, by me doing the construction this way, I can add a g bender later if I want, but so far I'm happy with just a b bender. Good luck and thanks again.
Glad it helped. It sounds like what you did was better, since most folks won't happen to have a bicycle brake lever sitting around. You may want post your own vid on how you did it. I originally did this because I thought if I didn't like b-bending, I could turn it back into a bigsby but I did like b-bending, and now g-bending as well although I got and modified a Hipshot because I couldn't figure out how to have both on this rig.
@@MegaSupyo Unfortunately, I have no idea on how to post anything on UA-cam. I guess if I had a video camera my computer guru could show me how. I'll check with a friend I have who does professional audio and video recording and see what he says.
All my Tele strings are through the body except for the B string. That's why I figured I wouldn't have to apply the forward screws.
If you are going to bend the B string only, do you really need the two(?) forward screws on the base? The two back screws hold very well for the two strings I bend on my square necked dobro using Palm Pedals. I pull the first string from D to E, and the second string from B to C. Because of the dobro's cover having multiple holes, the front screws couldn't be used.
The strings passing under the front bar do exert an upward force on the base, but with only the b-string attached to the bigsby, I agree that the front screws are probably not needed
The "O" rings are no problem. I've got the special pliers that remove them. The Bigsby back roller is 3/8" I think, but whatever the size the roller on the Chinese knockoff is I'll adjust the hole on the lever I make. I've rebuilt the Bigsby Palm Pedals before when I added them to my square necked dobro, so now the only problem is to wait for UPS to deliver my vibrato set up. I just got noticed that it has been shipped, so it should be here in about eight days or earlier. I've already set up the faux Tele base to make sure everything fits before mounting the b bender to my Tele. Thanks for the information. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Is it possible to remove the back roller to fit a new b bender arm in?
If it's like mine then it is possible. There is a circlip locking ring on one side, taking that off will let you pull out the shaft from the other side
I forgot to ask. How did you remove the vibrato arm? It doesn't seem to be held on by a screw. Is the plate holding the vibrato arm removeable?
These knockoff bigsby trems are all a little different. Mine had an arm tension spring and a nut holding the arm on. The nut is located under the arm where the compression spring is. Yours may be different. In any case, anything is removable with the proper leverage.
I had a Bigsby Palm Pedal base but needed one more lever. I found the right thickness of aluminum on the net and made the extra lever. I've got enough aluminum for five more levers, but I'll need just one for the B string. That's all I need to bend. I just ordered the same vibrato base you are using and will make a B bender for a Tele I built. If it works after the "hillbilly engineering" I will do to it, I will spread the word to others who can't afford the high price of commercial B benders. All parts considered I've got about $45 dollars invested rather that $$$$$$$. Thanks for your post. I'm sure more will try this. Poor people have poor ways.
I'm VERY interested in your findings!
Great song - it's hard to write a song, take a lot of thought. Guitar sounds really gutsy. But that Tele on the wall sure looks interesting with that Hipshot bender rigged to work with a palm pedal. Sue would like to hear a cut using it. I have a Hipshot on my Tele; thinking about rigging up a palm lever on it. Do you have a video of you playing it?
Thanks. I do have a few videos with the b bender and a tutorial on how to make the palm lever for the standard Hipshot. Check my channel. Here's one for the tone. ua-cam.com/video/zRWkEo4LUbI/v-deo.html
Where did you get that nice 4 jaw chuck with the allen wrench set up? Does it have the same capacity as the standard Unimat 3 jaw chuck?
If you have the same large as me, I believe you need an M12 thread chuck. I got mine on eBay, new from India. The real unimat ones are available but cost twice as much. I'm happy with mine but results may vary witth these things. www.ebay.com/itm/154870792670?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=jaqccrfssea&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=1QFV6tUSTua&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Novel approach and good work. Thanks for sharing your talents.
Do you use the original bridge? Or has it been modified?
The bridge had to be modified to let the strings pass through the back. I cut slots in mine for the strings to pass through. I think a top loader bridge might work, or they sell slotted bridges for use with a bigsby if you don't want to cut yours.
I’ve had one of these for 35 years,I took the G bender and drop D off mine,I may put the G lever back on after seeing this…also,it’s a nightmare trying to get the knurled screws over here in the UK,as they are US pitched thread !(fine) …I lost mine years ago,so it has a bolt in it now …thanks for sharing,I’m gonna have a go at this.
Yes the American system is based on archaic units of measure that seem to be related to the sizes of various body parts. Ironically, we inherited this system from England, who promptly abandoned it in favor of a system where everything is divisible by 10. We elected to stay with our anatomically based system where nothing is divisible by anything, unless you're a surgeon, hence the fractions.
@@MegaSupyo yes,but they are still the only units to have gone to the moon…and back.
@@joelfildes5544 the jury is still out on that. after all, when NASA was asked about it, they've claimed to have "lost" the tech on it. how convenient 😆
@@ultrakool plus…wouldn’t ‘The Germans’ have dealt in metric ? (Werner vin Braun…etc)
Oh hell ya! Iv been wondering how to mod this. Looks easy! Thanks so much
10 pounds of scrap on there! Why not just learn pedal steel instead??? 🙄
Negative attitude = Unhappy man
You did a beautiful job there!! Terrific playing too. I made mine with bike cable and the brake handles. I used Bigsby palm pedals and cut of the extra amount on the part that you usually use with the palm and drill holes through the palm pedal and through the guitar. I am able to bend both the B and the B and have one bike brake handle at the right hip area and the other at my stomach. It's really hardly noticeable when I use them. With my right arm I push the guitar tight to my hip or towards my stomach. Doing both at once is a bit tricky though. You could put a padding of some kind on the brake handles for more comfort if you wish. The stops are already on the palm pedal and there is no need to do anything with them but adjust for the pitch control. One problem could be that you would need an extra thick guitar case to accommodate the handles. Havin the G lever at the hip is good because you need the extra power to bend a G. So much fun and so many cool licks can be performed.
Thank you so much - for taking your time to help. Hipshot should make an option like yours
I don’t understand the mechanics that well, but the sound is wonderful and I like the song.
Takes double stop bends places I’m hard pressed to go lol
sounded great!
Homemade is always better. Nice dude.
Very nice, sounds profound
What a good idea. I have a hipshot and love the idea of the mod. I guess I'm off to the hardware store!
That sure was some beautiful playing
Show 👏👏👍
So cool that Jack White has copied you lol
Great feel man loved this!
Thank you for taking the time to do this. Very cool. Love your playing also. 🎸👍
Almost as versatile sounding as a Stratocaster when the B-Bender is employed!
Dude that is soooooo slick!!!
Wow! I’d buy one! Sounded awesome thank you!❤️👍🇦🇺🙏✊🎸
Great tone, how old is that telly?
Thanks. It's a partscaster with an older mij neck and an alder body of unknown make. Possibly Sx, but definitely not Fender. I made it about 20 years ago. The current pups are DiMarzio Velvet T bridge and Bluesbucker neck. It's a dark sounding tele as far as they go, but nice to play. Amp is an 80's Fender Super Champ
Genius and playing is good too. Well done.
is that real papa
No, son. It's just the wind in the trees. Go back to sleep
How cool!
Sounds nice, it sounds Beautiful
This was beautiful!,!,
What's the song your playing called?
I guess it doesn't have a name, it was just something I played to demonstrate the levers.
I have a Hipshot B Bender and might do this. Awesome
Swiss Army knife of guitars.
