Interesting recall. I began working as a SNCC volunteer in S.F. office in 1964. Stokely visited from the South; Tom Ramsey, Norma Whitaker also worked there. Ron Karenga showed up seeking a Secretary & asked me, white, if I'd be interested. Nope for me. John Lewis & Bob Moses visited from the South to focus on the screening of volunteers for SNCC Southern projects in Mississippi....MY husband and I headed to Miles College, Birmingham, and began working with SCLC....To revisit the evolution of a Movement now, what worked, what didn't, what changes would have had to be made for it to have been successful and carried us forward, would be interesting. Would be neat to talk about this - at least...

i never heard that term "orange curtain" before - very educational. growing up Jewish in SoCal my mother warned me about how many white supremacist & neo-nazi groups had a lot of power in Orange County. it is still a really really racist and classist area, and very homogenous - i'm scared of OC. LA on the other hand, very diverse and welcoming. the culture shock between the two places is huge.
