Thank you so much for posting this. Thank you Kim Deans. I am glad the idea of plant succession will soon flourish throughout Australia. You might watch a documentary produced through our PBS in the US: a Nova special called Mt St Helens: Back from the Dead. You can probably find it on youtube. It tells the story of plant succession after that volcano erupted. A small rodent and the seeds of a lupin (a legume) play a key role: plant/animal symbiosis. Our choicest plants are a only weeds that our ancestors helped along, finding some value in them. For instance, dandelion was and is again becoming favored as a proper green. My takeaway from my look into this was to plant legumes inoculated with rhizobia under conditions that establish that bacteria, so that subsequent plantings of legume grow in symbiosis without further inoculation, provided the soil is moist enough. This will allow legume cover crops to grow in low-nitrogen conditions (nitrogen, as you know, is the limiting macronutrient). It is important to note that legumes will not establish symbiosis with rhizobia if nitrogen is added as fertilizer. It is also important to mow the legume cover tops prior to seed setting, as the nitrogen stored in the root nodules will then stay in the soil for subsequent crops. And never take any plant matter out of your garden that you aren't going to eat. Compost it! And don't turn or double dig your soil. And companion plant as much as possible. Another good source might be a book by John Beeby titled Test Your Soil with Plants! Forgive my rant, but I just want your message about succession to gain purchase. I also want to share the value of legumes in establishing and maintaining soil health, and minimizing use of nitrogen as an amendment.

Water in north east corner of a land was the vaastu principle of farm dam and natural rain water retention structures.

Wouldn't it make sense to reestablish the ponds that occurred naturally along the drainage?

Well having that Bloke onto your property, threw a wrench into the fan. Kinda like shot you in your foot, for attempting to do good for your cattle. I'm guessing you will have to put a well onto the property, to pump water out of the ground now. In the droughts, cattle can smell water very easily, so you may have to keep them cow far away from your ponds. More mess than it's worth. So it seems.

As Australian's we have a bad tendency to over clear land, and especially along water courses and farmers dams are to small they always build duck ponds not dams, a dam is meant to be 50 or 100 metres long an atleast 20 to 30 metres wide We have had a couple of good years of rain an nobody or the government has built major water infrastructure to protect against the next drought It's time Australia dug hundreds of kilometres of water channels around Australia in each district,make the 200 or 300 metres wide an about 50 to 80 metres deep an do this every were to have adequate water

Looks like a pond, not a dam.

Put a to fence around the pond then plant foiliage inside so that will clear up the drainage

I'm in Canada. But I like the idea of coming up with a sort of template or a "package" of flora/species to "install" into the ecology.

Lay tree prunings in the dam for frog egg laying. They have something to cling to.

Thankfully someone is dealing with the obvious. Stop livestock wading into and getting stuck in the dams. Stop evaporation and pollution. Clean the water by fringe planting and ensuring they have an ecosystem The ACT government needs to fix all the public lakes and ponds as well. The state of these is shameful. Fix their ecosystems with appropriate predators and mix of plants and animal life. And predate those @##$%ing carp! Harvest them for a start, they can be good eating or be pet food and fertiliser at worst.

Use the dam water to grow vegetables in an instant vegetable patch it is a little costly but the watet saving is amazing .
