We build on camera Dumas's USCG 41' Utility Boat kit # 1216. This is the smaller version of this boat, in 3/8" = 1 foot scale. I hit a bit of a snag in constructing Dumas Products' U.S. Coast Guard 41' Utility Boat model, kit #1216. I made the mistake of not checking all the different views of the boat on the plan, and missed a measuring error I had made. I didn't find my error until it was too...

      I'm sorry to hear about that. I've had that happen to myself as well, so I'm considering doing a video on what to look for in second-hand ship model kits. Dumas's new kits like the shrimp boat are light years ahead of this old girl and her 36" sister. I'm trying to clear some time to try one.

      Thanks for watching the video! Check out our website for a primer on model ship build tools: www.themodelshipwright.com/construction-articles/tools-for-model-ship-building/ The main auction site is eBay. Here's a search for wood model ship kits: ebay.us/P6HTCm (that's an affiliate link, so we may earn a small commission if you buy something after clicking on it) Be cautious about buying your first kit on an auction site. Some listings may be already started, or missing pieces.

    From personal experience building America from Mamoli at 1/66 scale, calling the instructions vague is an understatement. While the original Italian is translated, it appears to be done poorly, and the parts lists are not translated at all. To build this one, a person will need an Italian/English dictionary, particularly covering ship terms if one wants to understand all the parts and their functions. As to the metal castings, expect to spend considerable time cleaning up flash. Source some additional wood as the kit came to me short on some lumber. Sails will need to be fabricated from scratch and while fabric is supplied, it's out of scale in it's weave and IMO they should be made with a much finer material. Thread supplied is all tan, so standing rigging will need to be dyed to resemble tarred rigging used in the day. All in all, this kit is NOT for a beginner, or the faint of heart, or a person lacking a great deal of patience. I will not be purchasing from this company again.

    • @themodelshipwright9065
      @themodelshipwright9065 2 місяці тому

      I agree with you that the larger Mamoli kits are not good for beginners. But the mini-Mamoli kits are drastically simplified in construction. Will they make a museum-quality ship model? No. But in a weekend one of these kits will give someone a good idea if they want to pursue the hobby.

      I do the same thing! When I see arborists working in the neighborhood I ask if I can look through the trimmings. I've picked up cherry, silver-leaf and Japanese maple, Chinese elm, red and white oak, black walnut, and a few other odd varieties. The logs are too small to be of interest for regular woodworking, but small enough to cut down to boards with my band saw and use in model making.

      You can always use traditional carpenter's glue, or even model airplane glue (designed for wood models). The only downside is they take much longer to set, so you have to find ways to hold the parts in place other than your hands.

    I just finished the model as far as the oars. Boy, was it difficult to chamfer the handles out, then shape the oars, LOL! Only had to scratch build two seats, so that’s good. It’s too cold now and too late to paint and put the rope on. Transom holes are too small for it anyway, so I’ll need to drill them out. Looking forward to the pram and the smack!

    I am new to wooden sailing ship model building. Am very familiar with plastic model building having built dozens of Walthers kits for my HO Train layout and a detailed Aircraft Carrier and F14 fighter. I have sanding blocks and flex sanders, pin vices mini drill bits, mini files, hobby knives, ca glues, wood glues etc. I bought a Scientific Brand kit of the Bluenose racing/fishing schooner many years ago which has a solid hull. My question is what is the best tool to drill the perpindicular holes for the masts. Seems like a basic question but it is a show stopper for me. Thanks

    • @themodelshipwright9065
      @themodelshipwright9065 10 місяців тому

      The biggest issue is that the mast may not be 90 degrees from the deck fore-to-aft. You have to measure the angle from the plan, and then make a wood guide to keep the drill bit at the correct angle as you drill the hole.

    I'm super new, literally buying my first kit in a few days. I used to do plastic models years ago, but started putting together metal models. I know they are night and day compared to wooden ship kits. If I get one of those green cutting mats, is that the same as the white board with all the markings, or is this something completely different?

    • @themodelshipwright9065
      @themodelshipwright9065 10 місяців тому

      Because you have to apply a significant amount of pressure to bend the planking to the hull frames the frames must be fastened to the building board. Gluing them to the board is the best way to do it with most models. And the board itself must be very stiff. The green cutting mat would be too flexible to hold the ribs in place as you bend the planking over them.

    • @roninsteel
      @roninsteel 10 місяців тому

      @themodelshipwright9065 I see, thanks for your reply. Is that for this build specifically or most all builds? I ended up getting the Occre Albatross

    • @themodelshipwright9065
      @themodelshipwright9065 10 місяців тому

      It's mainly a Dumas method to keep the hull square and plumb, but many plank-on-bulkhead kits would benefit from the technique. Other kits often have you glue a sub-deck to the ribs which helps support them against the twisting forces of the planks. Pre-bending the planks will decrease this tendency, but in any case be sure to attach the planks on alternating sides to balance the twisting forces. Also check the shape of the hull and ribs often to make sure you aren't "building in" a misalignment. Good luck on your project!

    This is so cool. I tried to build one of these in the 1970's, and if I had had this video back then, it would have answered a lot of questions. I feel like I want to try it again. I actually got most of the way through it, but I had to use a lot of filler on the bow and I hated myself for it, so I gave it away almost finished. I can see myself holding those planks together at the bow, while simultaneously gluing my other hand to the dog, then releasing the plank only to watch it unglue provocatively^8-)

    • @themodelshipwright9065
      @themodelshipwright9065 2 роки тому

      That's funny. Just yesterday I was using some super thin CA glue so I could clamp the parts together dry, get them aligned correctly, and then add the glue, which would be drawn into the seam via capillary action. One of my dogs barked unexpectedly, and I ended up not only gluing the parts together, but gluing my fingers together, and gluing them to the parts, and gluing the parts and my fingers to the cutting mat on my desk. It took about a half a bottle of Un-Cure, about 30 minutes, and every curse word I know to get everything loose again. Unfortunately my judicious application of Un-Cure also debonded the parts I was attempting to glue together as well.

      They don't have a specific rating system for kits other than these three, but price is always a good gauge of difficulty. A kit that's $189 will be significantly less complex than one that's $499. Also, check the text accompanying the kit. Toward the bottom most have a phrase such as: "Previous modeling experience helpful.'" "Previous modeling experience helpful but not necessary" Or "This kit is probably the easiest to build for a novice. Outstanding instructions."

      I think these kits are the best deal out there right now. This packaging dates as far back as the 1980s, and tons of them must have been sold in the US by Model Expo, which can be identified by the added English instructions with their name on it. It's funny to see the people posting them online as "rare" when a quick search of eBay shows a dozen or more listed any time I've checked. I picked one up for $16 recently by just watching and waiting until the seller got tired of relisting it at a ridiculously high price, and posted it it as an auction with a $0.99 starting bid.

Now that I am retired, thought I'd give it a shot, so here we go...I do believe I got an early version, for not all the pieces are cut out like the sample in the video. My rudder parts are all attached and I will have to take a saw to them, hope not a saber saw!!!

      Good luck on your build! I've got a closest full of kits waiting for me to fully retire. A good place to find parts you are missing is incomplete kits on ebay which can often be bought for $20 USD or less. Just message the seller and ask if it contains the parts you are looking for. I use a jeweler's saw to free the plywood parts that are too thick to use a hobby knife. Sort of like these: amzn.to/3rVjfz8 (that's an affiliate link, where I may get a small commission if you buy something) They are very thin, allowing you to cut curved shapes, and you can work very slowly to make sure you are cutting where you want to. Sometimes they call them "keyhole saws" because you can put the blade through a small hole and then attach it to the saw frame, allowing you to cut out pieces from the middle of a piece of wood.

      Thanks for watching! I had some projects that pulled me away from modeling, but recently I've been working on the next episode. The SD card I recorded the upper cabin assembly was corrupted, so unfortunately it will begin with the upper cabin complete. I made an error that I need to fix, so I'll be working through that process with some video of an actual 41' UTB I found. We also posted plans for the prototype boat here: www.themodelshipwright.com/high-resolution-ship-plans/cargo-ships/u-s-coast-guard-41-utility-boat/

    These are a great idea! Have been wanting to learn for some time. This gives some structure for learning basic ship building. Have completed the Dory and was pleased with the result. Feeling confident about starting the Pram. Thanks!

      Glad you liked the video! I do love guitar straps, especially the vintage-y looking narrow straps with the shoulder pad.

    Model Expo's president Marc Mosco left a great comment about this over on The Model Shipwright website, so I'm reposting it here for everyone to see. You can check it out on the website here: www.themodelshipwright.com/2021/06/07/big-changes-at-model-expo/ Hi, this is Marc. About the solid hull kits. Our next catalog will contain 4 solid hull kits …. Phantom, Sultana, Dapper Tom and Kate Cory. The others are poor sellers with exception of Harriet Lane, which is being re-issued in larger scale and plank-on-bulkhead, designed by David Antscherl. I would agree with you that solid hull kits have a better chance of being finished but there are reasons why we are walking away from them in the near future. 1) The hulls are carved by furniture makers in Highpoint, SC. In the past 30 years we are now working with the last furniture carver (table legs and such) in that town. He is 80 years old and does not have much of a business future ahead of him as High Point has gone from being America’s premier furniture manufacturing center to a ghost town. All of their factories have moved to China. 2) The cost of solid hull kits has surpassed the POB kits. Carved hulls still have to be whittled fore and aft by hand as they are delivered with stems that held the wood in pantograph carving machines. We have a Philippine who is good at this but soon he is returning to retire in the Philippines. 3) The Europeans have convinced 95% of model builders that POB is more authentic since all of their kits with exception of the junky, little ones designed for youngsters are all POB. On another note … Model Expo is having the best year ever. In part due to Covid and the stay-at-homes but also because we are doing very well in Europe … even Italy! Our biggest challenge now is producing enough to meet demand. Thank you for your videos. I look forward to the Learning Series of Dory, Pram and Smack. Best regards, Marc Mosko
