Hiking up the Massanutten Trail in the Dark

Coming off the heels of extremely high reviews, Strickler's Knob was a much-anticipated hike. It promised decent elevation gain and mileage, with the promise of a view at the end, so I was excited to dig my boots into the ground and hike on up. I got a pair of waterproof loggers on the way, and bought them with intention to use them for steep mountain slopes when hiking and picking mushrooms, etc. I plan to give them a toe cap upgrade for heavy brush, but time will tell if they are good for deep forest hiking in the PacNW.

    If logger/ work boots even comes close to hiking boots , it's rather remarkable. I've owned some really old style Italian hiking boots and boots like White's and Nick's and I would never use those work boots on my hiking trails ,especially since I generally am in the upper Himalayas. My Alico Summit boots have been my stock hiking boots and part of my gear for years now and they're fantastic.

    The same as Lowa Renegades: very beautiful, nice adjust, ankle protector, but...Crap. No cushion at all. What's the point of making a hiking boot that is not made to hike? We are supposed to walk a lot of miles, that's not possible with a boot that has a sole like iron. This staff is shit. Go Salewa or Adidas Terrex. I've done 16-18 miles hikes and no pain no tiredness at all after.

    Thanks for the videos! I have the exact same Quest 4D boots and had the exact same problem with the sore feet and smashed in feeling toes. I solved the first problem by getting Dr Scholl’s “Sport Gel” insoles, they also have some added arch support I found really helpful. As for the toe squish issue, I found that taking advantage of the Solomon’s lace locking lug by really ensuring a very snug (tighter than I initially though appropriate) fit on both the bottom half and top half allowed me to really get the best fit and hold my feet in place in the boot, preventing said toe squish. Happy hiking!

    Thanks for the vid, I have flat feet and had 2 ankle surgeries on the same ankle. Thanks for the info, was looking into this boot for a while for hikes. Would you recommend getting the boat with a bit of space or get a size that is squeezing the sides of your feet for a more secure feeling? Not sure if this is a good idea for long hikes.

    • @adventuresinroamance6003
      @adventuresinroamance6003 3 роки тому

      I recommend getting a boot that has about an inch of space in front of your toes - you will want that extra space when you are going downhill and the rocks are smashing your toes. As far as width is concerned, these boots are actually really flexible and lace up extremely tight, regardless of the socks I'm wearing. Therefore, I suggest ordering true-to-size, ensuring that you have space ahead of your toes. Cheers!

      @NJHC21 4 роки тому

      Adventures in Roamance I have semi low arches and my father has no arch. Something I’ve learned from him is no boots are made for us. That means never go with a stock insole. I always buy arch support insoles. I go to rei with them and as I try on boots I’m putting my insoles in. Salomons are great. Oboz bridger is another great boot. They might be clunkier than a pair of quest and might take longer to break in but they’re about as sturdy as you can get. You will notice they have a higher tendency to roll over as the bottom has a thinner rounded edge.(compared to salomons wider more squared off soles) but this has its pros and cons when hiking different terrains. There isn’t a boot I would recommend over these two though. I’d be interested to see you out a year into a pair of oboz and declare a victor.
