Disordered Eating
Season 04, Episode 17
When it comes to disordered eating, will power is not the problem. We’ve been conditioned to believe that we are solely responsible for our eating habits, but the same society that tells us this is also part of the problem. It’s time to shift the narrative and view disordered eating through a lens of healing rather than shame. Our nervous systems are designed to protect us, and by working with them to rewire the patterns imprinted by society and our childhood experiences, we can cultivate compassion for ourselves-and ultimately, healing.
In today’s episode, Elisabeth and Jennifer engage in another insightful conversation about disordered eating, with compassion as the central theme. They explore the neuroscience behind disordered eating, explaining what happens in the brain and nervous system when we binge eat or restrict food. The discussion touches on how mental states like dissociation and hypervigilance can lead to disordered eating, the role of the interoceptive system and the insular cortex, and how hunger signals-or the lack thereof-affect us. The hosts also explore how using effective neuro tools can aid in healing these areas, and much more.
Our relationship with food is one of the most fundamental yet complex relationships we have. To heal our relationship with food, if we shift our focus from the food itself to understanding the role the brain and nervous system play in forming maladaptive eating patterns, we can get to the root of disordered eating, and take control of it once and for all.
Tune in to hear this and more!
