When words fail, music speaks..
How Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) Benefit Musicians & Venues | BMI, ASCAP, SESAC Explained
In this video, we explore the critical role that Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) like BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC play in the music industry. Whether you're a musician, songwriter, or venue owner, understanding these organizations is key to navigating copyright, royalties, and legal music usage.
🎶 What You'll Learn:
What are PROs?: Understand the difference between BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC - three major PROs in the U.S. that help protect music creators’ rights and ensure they get paid when their music is publicly performed.
BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.): A for-profit organization with over 1.4 million affiliates, representing artists like Miley Cyrus and Eminem.
ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers): A nonprofit with over 1 million members, including stars like Billie Eilish and Beyoncé.
SESAC: An invitation-only, for-profit PRO representing artists like Bob Dylan and Ariana Grande.
How PROs Work: Learn how these organizations help creators by tracking public performances of their music, managing licenses, and distributing royalties. Discover how they simplify the licensing process for venues and businesses using music.
How PROs Benefit Musicians: Find out how PROs offer a steady income source, protect creators' rights, and ensure fair royalty payouts. Despite challenges in royalty distribution, PROs play a pivotal role in supporting songwriters and composers, especially in the streaming era.
What PROs Offer Venues: If you run a venue or business that plays music, you’ll want to know how PROs help you legally comply with copyright laws, access a huge music catalog, and avoid the risks of non-compliance (fines, lawsuits, reputation damage).
Real Talk About Royalties: While many musicians don’t live off their royalties, songwriters still benefit the most from PROs. As the backbone of the music industry, they need support more than ever with the decline of physical sales and the rise of streaming.
🔑 Why it Matters: Whether you’re an artist, venue, or music lover, understanding how music licensing works through PROs is crucial for keeping the music business fair and sustainable. Support live music and compensate creators for their work!

Thanks, Dave! That was very informative and helped me understand things better.
Mommy made me mash my M&M’s….. Daddy dunked a donut didn’t he….
If people driving by had any idea 🤣🤣🤣
hello sir can you give me a little brief rundown of what chords your playin here :)
Hey! This is just F to G in the verse and reversed as G to F in the chorus. Nice and easy!
Funny thing is I make way more money playing solo in a room where nobody seems to care than I do in a packed bar with the band…lol
@@Santaheckler Lol… yeah, I feel like that first band performance paycheck may be a real kick in the balls compared to the solo shows. I think the band thing may pay in other ways that aren’t monetarily related, such as community & energy, and I’m super excited for that 🤙 Thanks for taking the time to watch & comment!
Great podcast!
Thanks so much for watching JAKE!!!
@@DaveGatesMusic you’re welcome!
Another Jezebel…..
Great podcast! Subscribed!
@@Santaheckler Thank you so much for listening and subscribing 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

@@wandamiller3562 Thanks for listening!!!
Thank you
Don't beat yourself up , it is a 2 way street .
I really enjoyed today's podcast.
Thank you so much for listening Wanda!! Video is coming soon 🙏
@DaveGatesMusic I always find the podcasts so interesting.
Looking forward to more live streams. It was really nice last Tues ! Fred
A very good and very much meaningful song for any and all circumstances of restarting.
DO IT ! You are a excellent entertainer!
Nice podcast , good luck with the studio...
Let's go brother get ahold of me whenever your free. Miss ya man hope all has been well
You sound burned out !
I hope you have a much needed and relaxing vacation, Dave. ❤
My Man
YO, that's me! I am glad it shows. I appreciate youse
Wow super solid cover brother!
Nice job! Great song. I liked your replacement of "disgraced" vs. "junkie", more in line with the acoustic vibe. Subbed Also -does that mic stand have a cupholder? I need one of those...
I always enjoy Thursday Thoughts. What a bad Monday you had! That's crazy!
Another great podcast! Always so interesting.
It sounds like a good plan! You are following your dreams.
I really enjoyed this!
Thank you so much for all your support!!
Excellent ! My wife and I saw you last night at Bellas in Stewartstown and I talked to you about guitars. Har d to believe that you have only been playing since 2018 ! Amazing!
I remember you!!! Thank you SO MUCH for hanging out that night, I was gifted an incredible audience to play for. Really appreciate you taking the time to check out my UA-cam Channel!
Very nicely done
Thank you!
Yup, Iron Lion!
My favorite cover! 🎉
Playing Catch Up. Sound Great Dave....!!
That’s awesome!
You said exactly what I've been feeling about JRE in the last few months. Great style, bro! I'll listen to your podcast! Best wishes, from The Bay.
Thank you so much for listening. It's frustrating to hear him guide the conversation to the same things over and over again. Starting to sound like a boomer 💯
Well, it's one of the best acoustic covers, definitely
There's no sound?
Not sure what happened for you, it's working on my end though! Thanks for listening!
This is freaking awesome!!!
I love Chris Rider!
Can you please play some of your originals at Iron Lion?! Love your originals!!
Nice job
very good cover Dave, best regards Horst
Great interview Wally!
you deserve more views
Another Rush Limbaugh...
I dont know why your still having low views... I'm not into podcast, I'm sure yours are the only ones I've ever listen to. On the voice, not long ago I had a bad sore throat, my first and i had 3 days before my gig. I sucked down tea with honey and 2 spoons of honey and some cough drops. Ive been playing less songs at my gig and taking extra time between songs. You dont want to screw with your voice. Lynda Ronstadt in her 70s and she can't sing anymore she says. But I'm like you just play, because it makes the time go by faster, but I wont be doing that, anymore.
This is a great podcast, love it and keep it up!!
Thanks for listening Jake!
@@DaveGatesMusic You’re very welcome!!
For some reason utube are not getting your videos out to people. I didn't even know that you were still posting. Maybe that's why you have very few views utube screwing u over.
That's such a bummer to hear, although, I haven't really been posting much lately, life has been busy. I'll be posting a bunch of videos including the podcast in the future, hopefully they get better treatment. Thanks for checking out the podcast!
@@DaveGatesMusic you might need more therapy now. How are you getting your gigs? I work a weekly gig at a Cafe and have been for a year. With a gig at a bar a few months ago. I go to a country bar and play at times, with their open mic, but it's the same night as my weekly gig. But I'm wanting to get more gigs. How you doing it? I had everything checked on you as the bell, I have know idea why utube was getting your videos to people. Maybe because they were way different from your previous stuff. I don't get it, I know you were posting good than you disappeared.
Dude, well played. Respect.
Rip biz 🙏
