Well, this was interesting, but didn't really help.. We are doing an 'old-time radio' series of plays, and we need to build our own sound effects. Does anyone know of a written article on what to use for certain sound effects? We cannot use pre-recorded sounds, because of the limitations of our 'theatre'.
I am absolutely flabbergasted that this does not have more views than it does. I'm just a bit to young to have experienced radio programs like this before the age of Television. But I have listened to several stories told on vinyl's growing up in the early 70's. Really cool video... I have two hands but every where I go on the internet i can only give one thumbs up. deserves both from.. Thanks
Even though he did not have a cigarette sponsor, I think it took guts in the early 50's to be so upfront about the dangers of smoking! I wonder if he caught flack for that from the network biggies.

It’s so cool that people knew and talked about getting high in the 30s!
"Minnie the Moocher" mentions four drugs: weed, coke, opium, and speed. Gotta be a record, lol.

People have been knowing about and talking about getting high for a lot longer than the 1930s.
Cooler when you realize its been millenia
Reefer was legal until 1937 and there are several songs about it. The Viper song from 1935 and Armstrong's Muggles song.
