You can calculate standard deviation by hand. A little surprised any exam would ask to calculate standard deviation by hand but it’s not that difficult. Just time consuming. Find the average. Subtract the average from each data point. Square each of those results. Sum those values. Divide by n-1. Then take the square root. That’s the numerator in this problem.

Hi, Spencer, I have a question. If I am getting money from a lawsuit settlement, will I have to pay fica taxes on the settlement money? Or will I only have to pay federal and state taxes? Is money from a lawsuit considered earned income or unearned income? The lawsuit has nothing to do with my employer of payroll by the way
First off, I’m not a CPA. I’m just a math teacher. Lol. So I’d say first to confirm with a CPA. But certain settlements are not taxable, depending on the nature of the settlement. But my understanding is that unless it’s a replacement of wage income, it is considered interest income, which is passive and not subject to FICA. But again I’d check with a CPA.
