How Do You Hide Pitted Metal with Powder Coating?

The rustier the part, the more pitted it will be, even after blasting. While the only cure is to refabricate the part, you CAN hide some of the pitting with a textured powder. Take a look at this example.

Powder Coating Pitted Railing

This railing was quite pitted when it came to us (not uncommon for parts installed near roads). While you can still see evidence of that in certain lights, it's amazing what a fresh coat of powder coating can do.

We use pole hooks
Yes
Put hooks on your frames and mount a winch outside to remove large projects.
Well c'mon then let's not wait for the grass to grow
Can you elaborate please?
Thank you for the information. In the video you talk about blasting the rail. Is that sandblast the rail? Is there a video on line of how that is done? Could you explain more please. Thanks again for the info!
Can I use Iron phosphate like a "primer" or can I add directly on the formulation of my coating like a additive?
Looking into starting a set up soon! Def going for quality on a budget
How do you clean the cured powder on them..?
Good question . I did like to know. Presently I use stripper. I dissolve them in the chemical for a while then retrieve and scrape.
I want to learn boss can you teach me pls
Interesting to see the difference between regular spray booth and powder booth. At the PPG lab I would use waterfall booths and wear clean air supplied PPE whilst spraying 2K. I see a lot of youtubers not taking PPE and ventilation seriously with powder (and regular), and it does concern me. Not like I can do anything about their health though. Love the pulsing on the filters to clean them off.
Man, I can make use of all that waste powder. I powder coat my cast lead bullets and only need it to keep the bullets from leading up the barrels as they go through so I don't care what color it would be in the end.
Does it need to be hot before applying the 2nd coat?
Very interesting, surprised you haven't had more views on this, maybe showing each process on separate vids might, i.e one for steel, one for alu and so on. Main reason I'm asking is what are the names or brands of the treatment products you use? In a lot of countries, such as UK a lot of chemicals are restricted and therefore disguised in brand names.
A part sprayed with the waste would be cool to see without trying to mix it all together just let it layer how ever it goes
You should do a part with all that mixed together like a bar mat shot at the end of the night😂.
How many BTUs is the heater? Thanks for the tour!
Yep. Anywhere where water and minerals can sit will rust prematurely. I just repaired a work trailer that had plywood sides that came all the way down and touched the frame. Mud got trapped there and rusted huge holes on the tubings.
Or spray those areas hot
do you pre wash or degrease and if so do you use the same spray gun system? rinse between? and after phosphate treatment?
You can hit those faraday areas with cold galvanizing zinc spray after blast, and before powder. It will seal the exposed joint.
Thank you for a short and informative video on this infrequently covered topic. This makes so much sense.
Make it last even longer,, keep it inside always
This could be the most honest powder coat channel and powder coater I have ever seen. True real world talk and honesty about how long a coating will last and what to expect even when talking about stainless or aluminum. It’s really refreshing to see this and not some sales pitch or the typical “it’s powder coated it will last forever”.
I’m new to powder coating any kind of help would greatly be appreciated! We went to the class at Columbia Coating, but not much hands on experience with them! Great class, but expecting more!

Thank you for the video. I have a question. I'm powder coating clear on my rolling ball sculpture. I've only done flat objects and this would be the same as a large birdcage. When I hang it to powder. Will i have to change the hang orientation to cover it all with powder or will ibe able to cover all surfaces from it hanging still? Thanks for the help mt. 😎
You will be able to coat the entire part no matter the orientation as long as you can spray from all needed angles. However, the spot where the hook touches the part will not get coated.
@@kaserblastingcoatings thank you for the help👍

We use warm water. How hot is your steam?
@@kaserblastingcoatings 200+ f

@@kaserblastingcoatings iron phosphate is good between 110-130 f,we usually use zinc phosphate which is good between 170-190 f Both phosphates are goodthat we use with the steam jetty,we have done pull off test on both phosphates and have really good results, over 1300 psi in pull tests.

The part is over cured?
How would we determine that? What other signs are there?
@@kaserblastingcoatings gloss levels, and possibly a mek rub test, some powders when over cured will lose adhesion. It might be worth while curing at a slightly lower temperature for a longer period of time to make sure you don’t over cure. And another factor to consider is your ventilation in the oven,is it venting all the I’ll the smoke out of the oven,I’ve seen it happen when you leave parts in the oven after you turn off the oven
@@horthydro3987 This is super helpful. We think this is happening because the parts are extremely thick and take a long time to get to temperature (gas fired convection oven). Any advice for that?
@@kaserblastingcoatings I normally pre heat the parts to 300f then hot flock the powder on to flow out, then immediately put them back into the oven, this will save you a bunch of time in the oven. Hot flocking powder is tricky,I normally turn down my KV to reduce in wanted build up on edges, the powder will sag if there is to much.
This is good info, thanks for sharing!@@horthydro3987

How does your steel not flash rust when rinsing with water before phosphating?
Typically, city water is not low enough in pH to cause flash rusting. If flash rusting is happening during your water rinse, check the pH of your city water.

@@Skeeter_420 pH neutral is 7. Most city water is 7-8.
