Serpent in Eden: Foreign Meddling and Partisan Politics in James Madison's America
Переглядів 75Місяць тому
In this lecture, Tyson Reeder traces early America's rocky beginnings, when foreign interference and political conflict threatened to undermine its aspirations and ideals, even its very existence. Spanning the period from the Revolution to the War of 1812, and focusing particularly on the career of James Madison, it reveals a nation adjusting to rancorous partisan politics, aggravated by the un...
Environmental Legacies: How the War of Independence Affected the Natural World

We don't always consider the powerful impact that the War of Independence had on the physical landscape of 18th century America - much less how those impacts might still be seen and felt today. Join Professor David C. It is a truism that Lower Manhattan has been America's town square since its founding in 1524, even though its history is much deeper. Virtually every aspect of global, local and national significance can be in some manner traced to this Downtown stage. Some have been forgotten and some have been transformative in our culture and many have fallen between. This is both a project in urban archaeo...
When Washington Burned: The British Invasion of the Captial and a Nation's Rise from the Ashes

Perhaps no single day in US history was as threatening to the survival of the nation as August 24, 1814, when British forces captured Washington. This unique moment might have significantly altered the nation's path forward, but the event and the reasons why it happened are often forgotten. In this lecture, Dr. Robert Watson explores the British campaign and American missteps that led to the fa...

The Pursuit of Happiness

What did “the pursuit of happiness” mean to our nation’s founders and how did that famous phrase become the foundation of our democracy? The Declaration of Independence identifies “the pursuit of happiness” as one of our unalienable rights, along with life and liberty. In his new book, National Constitution Center President and CEO Jeffrey Rosen profiles six of the most influential founders-Ben...
A Revolutionary Friendship: Washington, Jefferson, and the American Republic

Martha Washington’s worst memory was the death of her husband. Her second worst was Thomas Jefferson’s awkward visit to pay his respects subsequently. Indeed, by the time George Washington had died in 1799, the two founders were estranged. But that estrangement has obscured the fact that for most of their thirty-year acquaintance they enjoyed a productive relationship. In this lecture, Francis ...

The failures, defeats and eventual occupation of the area at the hands of the British for...

By throwing parties, Hancock gained social and political power among myriad groups,...

Very interesting lecture. I will have to read the professor’s book. Why did Spain give up Louisiana to France in 1800? Did Spain simply sell it because they were desperate for money or did Spain lose Louisiana because of a war with France? It seemed to be a huge loss for Spain to lose Louisiana.

A shame we don't have a more active Battlefield Trust in Canada, because right now there is a lawn bowling site, and events park, sitting roughly on the site of Tecumseh's 2nd last fight on The Thames, from the day before he died, with a few small plaques and a surplus cannon, sitting in a corner.

“Nobody was predetermined to become a loyalist…” Kevin Philips and Charles Coulombe - two excellent historians on all things Loyalism - would beg to differ. Have you read the former’s “Cousins’ Wars”? It is a mammoth-sized masterpiece and one of the most impressively detailed books that claims the very opposite. This is a lot more easy to understand if one accepts that the American Revolution was, above all else, a bitter civil war. America’s first, to be exact.

I beg to differ on the notion that Arnold’s situation was that he was simply a “traitor” and nothing more. At the very least, his reasons for leaving the Continental cause are highly oversimplified and grossly misunderstood. For one thing, he had enemies long before his status of treason, Gates among them. Let us never forget that time and time again was he extremely mistreated by the Congress, having been repeatedly denied adequate necessities for his men, in addition to provisions, steady pay, etc. And time and time again, he provided his men these things from out of his own pocket. Very few continental officers could ever boast of having done likewise. Case in point, it is all too easy to write the man off as a “traitor”. But most people would have done the same thing had they endured the kind of abuse deliberately inflicted upon Arnold. And, unlike Arnold, there is little doubt that they would have held on for as long as he did. There is a new documentary about him, the first of its kind to absolve him of this slander. You can easily find it here on UA-cam. Highly recommended.

It's pretty apparent Mary Ball Washington suffered anxiety throughout her life that was often misplaced into finances (though likely a product of being orphaned as a little 10 year old girl and having witnessed her father, stepfather and mother passing in such a short span of time). This is also likely the reason she wrote the state of Virginia for a pension and fled Fredericksburg temporarily during the Revolutionary War despite there being no battle there; she was seeking a feeling of security. If she were anything less than a good mother to her son, George Washington, he would not have stayed by her side for two days before his inauguration in 1789, as he knew she was passing on not too many months later.

Great talk! Didn't realize the British soldiers were offered land grants after the war was over. My ancestor, Thomas Hustler, was a British soldier who went over to the American side (turncoat) during the war and had a $25,000 price on his head. He had a tavern (Hustler's Tavern) in Lewiston, NY during the war of 1812 and served both sides equally so that when the British burned down the town at one point the only building left was Hustler's Tavern. Thank you!

Um...to be clear...by the time Washington died he absolutely hated Jeffersons guts not only for what he did to Hamilton and the Federalist party, but for his personal betrayal. When Jefferson showed up at Mt. Vernon to pay his respects, Mrs. Washington said it was the second worse day of her life, the first being Washington's death. Not relevant. But Jefferson died in unbelievable debt and had ro sell even some of the slaves he fathered. Washington had every one of his freed on his death. Or Martha did.

Thank you for your research. This was very interesting. I especially enjoyed hearing about the statistics. I had no idea that only 10% were actually pressed into service. The primary sources i.e. recruiting ads were intriguing. It is also interesting to note the diversity of the stories of individuals like James Rennison, Joseph Dunkerly, James Cuffe and Dennis Green. Unfortunately, I have not read the book. I would be interested to know about the effect on the civilian population of the colonies. Did British soldiers kill or execute colonists? If so, what were the circumstances? Were any immolated as is suggested by Mel Gibson's fantasy film The Patriot (2000)? There are instances such as the Bombardment of Fallmouth, Maine (1775), the Burning of Norfolk (1776), the Great Fire of New York City, NYC (1776), the Burning of Farifield and Norwalk, Connecticut (1779), and the Raid on Richmond, Va. (1781), which are all very particular and include very specific reasons for attacking these cities and towns. It is not always clear how civilians died. Was it a policy to execute or kill civilians?

A very interesting video sir. When I was in Officer Candidate School, I was required to complete a paper on the Nine Points of War, and I chose the Battle of Bennington for my paper because it was a very successful event for a largely state militia force and was instrumental in the overall victory of the Continental Revolution. It also served as the basis for veteran compensation for military service that is in practice today. Thank you for this most excellent and well-done work sir. I did earn my commission and am now retired; but my study into American history and in particular the Battle of Bennington continues and helps me to better understand our mutual history.

It was called Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. The new emigrants flourished early on and this lead to “The Sand Floor Synagogue” in 1833. It is the Second Oldest Synagogue in the Western Hemisphere with continuous services since 1796. Chai (Off Island) Membership keeps us going. I do a tour there. Awaiting your visit. Shalom
