Manhattan Terminal Railroad Layout Tour
Amazing layout. So much attention to detail.
Ah, a perfect Operations Video for a lazy Sunday morning. Thanks! - Paul
Thanks Paul!
Listened to your interview on the Around the Layout podcast. Very interesting!
Thanks, appreciate the comment!
Great layout and well done scenes. The towering buildings/warehouses really set the stage for the area you are modeling. All the trash strewn along the tracks looks realistic. Enjoyed your recent interview with Ray Arnott on "Around the Layout" podcast. Mike
Thanks Mike, appreciate your comments!
This is incredible! Excellent modeling! Brings back memories of growing up in New York.
Thank you, appreciate the kind words.
Great operation and details, Thank you,,,
I was just looking at some of the New York Central System Historical Society articles in their Modeler magazine and thought about your videos. You should inquire about sending them pictures of your layout and NYC equipment. You may already be a member, but if not, think about joining and writing an article about the Highline. You can also tell them about your videos. They are much better than the ones they have.
Hi Tom! Thanks for the note. I am a member of the NYCSHS. As you know, I model it and also my father-in-law worked for the Central in the towers around Rochester, NY, from the 1940s to 1960. My layout was in the Central Modeler about five or six years ago, with an article and photos across two issues.. The layout has changed significantly since then, though.
Well done, how do you control the turnouts?
Turns outs are hand thrown, usually with a skewer. No electrical switches, switch machines, or anything on the fascia.
thanks im guessing Peco brand?@@manhattanterminalrailroadh9776
Another successful MTR video!
Absolutely fantastic. Having grown up in NYC and worked in Manhattan many years I can say you nailed it. Excellent modeling skills. Do you have a printed trackplan?
Thank you…appreciate the kind words. I don’t have a printed track plan at the moment.
A few simple switching moves.... shouldn't take too long....😊 Yea Right😅 Love it. Great way to kill some time. ❤
Another great video, but what is the classification of this loco?? You still have the best videos on UA-cam!
Hi Tom, thanks for the feedback. Can you clarify your question about the loco….not sure exactly what you’re asking.
@@manhattanterminalrailroadh9776 Is it a GP, an SD or some other model?
It”s an Athearn Genesis GP-18 with a LokSound 5 decoder and Scale Sound System speakers. @@thomasryan9639
Always good to see another Ops video. Gotta keep those New Yorkers stocked with good Wisconsin beer!
Thanks Paul!
What decoder/speaker is in the 4704? Beautiful sound!
The decoder is a LokSound 5 with Scale Sound System speaker.
You never know what motive power to expect to see on the Manhattan Terminal!
My favorite train display 😊
Excellent layout and filming 👍 A+
Really excellent camera work on your videos. I appreciate all the different perspectives you offer and the layout looks great. Weathering on the loco and the cars, first rate -- in short, I'm a fan.
Thanks, appreciate the comments!
The smoothness of the slow speed running is impressive. Do you wire power feeds to each piece of track to ensure smooth electrical continuity across the rails? Did you re-gear the locomotives to get them to run that smooth at such a slow speed? The building flats along the water front look so good. The entire level of details look so good.
I can’t say every piece of track has feeders wires, but most. And as I have reworked sections of the layout, including a new 12 foot extension, I do add feeders to every piece of track. I have not re-geared any locomotives, but I have learned from experience which brands lend themselves to slow speed operations and which do not. In addition to buying only units that operate well at slow speed, I play around a lot with CV settings, including momentum for acceleration and braking, to get the smoothness I’m looking for. The brand of decoder makes a difference, too.
Your level of detailing is truly impressive. Such a great job.
Thanks, appreciate the feedback!
Always fun to watch the MTR!
Thanks Joe!
Exceptional layout, really like a work of art as much a model train layout -- great detail, looks so real and so authentic. I'm a new fan, to be sure.
Thank you…appreciate the kind words.
Is this a low-nose SD7 or 9? If so, I never knew these existed.
It’s an SD24
While the SP never owned SD24s, EMD painted some up in SP colors and were numbered in the 7200 series but they lacked SP lettering. SP didn’t bite and they were sold to UP who repainted them into UP colors.
@@manhattanterminalrailroadh9776 thanks for the clarification.
Very nice! Is that a new locomotive? I don't recall seeing that one before. Did the time period shift?
Thanks! The SD24 is one of my newer units and I don’t believe it has been used in a video. The time period has gradually crept forward in time from late 1950s to 1965. It will creep further to 1966 when I add a GP40 to the roster, but I don’t expect it to be any more recent than that.
Another fantastic Ops video, always worth the wait. Looking forward to seeing the new extension!
Thanks Paul!
Nice ops running great scenery work 🚂😎🫵
Been waiting for this video for a long time, but it was worth it. Great work!
Thanks Tom, always appreciate your comments. I’ve been sidetracked on a 12 foot extension of the railroad.
Enjoyed it 👍🤠👍
The time and love that went into this is incredible. I can watch this over and over and not see the same thing twice. Beautifully done.
Thank you. I appreciate the kind words.

So much scenery in a compact region. It imbues everything about the city, including smells.
As usual a nice video, thank's for the action.
Another great video! Love your layout.
Love the video as usual. One of my favorites maybe as I just like the scenes and your shots were really nicely done.
I always enjoy watching the action on the Manhattan Terminal!!
Another great video! Is that one of the latest Atlas models?? I have #8100. I think Atlas is the only company that makes RS1s in ho scale. The best running locos made! Thanks for the ride! Can't wait for the next video.
Thanks Tom! Yes, it’s an Atlas, but it’s as old as your 8100. I have 8100 and 8102 and bought them both about the same time, maybe ten years ago. I recently updated the decoder and sound file with the LokProgrammer.
Perfect way to spend 16 minutes on a Sunday! Thanks for the switching video!
Thanks Paul!

Did you know that people who have lines in the Palm of their hands that form a M shape are usually very lucky
As a resident of Manhattan’s Upper West Side, I love this layout. The scenery, the rolling stock, and the prototypical ops. Great video.
Very nice weathering on the rolling stock
