Welcome to Frank Rauscher's carving channel! I have been carving for over 35 years. Mainly teaching how to carve realistic birds and animals on a step by step basis, including wood burning techniques. I will be giving lessons to carve birds and animals in these videos, as well as the products used to create these items. It will involve techniques for power carving and we will finish with lessons on painting the items to a realistic look!

Part 12 : Texturing the sandpiper's feathers with a burning pen
#carving #woodcarvingtutorial #carvinglessons #carvinglessons #woodburning
We start by marking out the quills for each feather in the scapular and terial areas of the birds feather with a pencil. Then with a burning pen ( optima 12,12s, or 5) ,we burn in the quill and then plunge the pen tip into the leading edge of the in front feather and lift as you come back. Always radiating out to the left and then to the right to create the markings for these feathers. Now burn in the primary feathers by following the pencil line we drew. On the next video I will show you how to lift these feather and then detail them. If you have any questions about the process or the products used, please contact me through the comments section of this video or through my email.

Thank you very much
I just found your videos and I have to say that you’ve taught me a few things for certain. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and talent with us all. I’m going through each bird tutorial and I found you because I searched cardinal carvings. Yours are by far the most realistic I have seen anyplace. I am going to try as much as possible to make one but I know it won’t be as cheerful as yours. Thanks again and I hope you will continue to teach us. ✌🏻🤞🏽
Hi, thank you for the nice comments and I hope you enjoy the rest of my videos of other birds and animals
Great info. Well done.😊
Thanks for the kind words. Hope enjoy the rest of the videos
Good job
Thank you
Nice job Frank, It’s really taking shape. I’ve done this thing mostly using knifes and chisels in the past but I can see the advantage of using power carving. You don’t have to be as concerned about the grain of the wood and also the sharpness of your knifes and chisels. Going to give power carving a try on this project. Only disadvantage I can see is the amount of dust and debris you produce.
Hi, I agree with you about sharpening your knives and when I switched over to power carving, it was a game changer. I hope you will continue using power and hope you will enjoy the videos that I have provided. Thanks
How to I contact you for supplies, kits, etc?
Hi, you can contact me through my email or I will send you a catalog through your email and this has my phone number if you would like to speak to me. Thanks
Hi Kieth, would you send me your email address and I can send you my catalog. You could call or email me about any questions you have.
This is so cool! So glad I found this video :) I hope to be able to do this in the future and follow your guides! Keep up the cool stuff!!!
Thank you for the nice comments and I hope you enjoy the rest of the videos.
What grit sand paper are you using to sand the beak?
Hi, I usually used a 120 grit sandpaper, that seems to be my grit of choice. If you ever need any grit sandpaper, I do have Swiss made cloth sandpaper, 36” long. I hope that helps you
I finally feel that I got your feather burning style down. Thanks Frank!
Hi, I glad you got the technique down. It’s sometimes take to get good at it. Just remember, practice makes perfect. Frank
Is that a VCR on the top shelf?? Amazing talent!!
Yes, that’s a vcr ( a real collector’s item just like me). Thanks for the nice comment.
Hi folks, I recently received Frank’s catalog and I must say the prices are good as a matter of fact the price on his kits, blank’s ,eyes and feet are great and this is from a 40 year carver.
Thank you for the nice comments about my catalog and I am just trying to get people starting to carve.
dude nice channel. I just scrolled through your videos. I got a lot to look forward to.
Thanks for the nice words and hope you will enjoy the rest of the videos
бесконечное бла бла бла как делает как работает ничего не показано, однозначно дизлайк, смотреть нечего
Keep watching and I hope you enjoy the rest of my videos
Hi Frank, do you ever do decorative duck decoys?
I did a wood duck miniature and have a kit for it. I haven’t made a video yet. Maybe in the future. Thanks
You are so fucking boring, I can' not watch another one of your video's. You truly believe your talking to a bunch of idiots.
I love your work, but you are taking to maybe carvers who would like to venture into a new arena of carving. So-----try not to think you are speaking to a bunch of idiots. We just don't need that much instruction.
I really appreciate your nice comments about my work and I can appreciate the skill set that you have achieved but there are many people that haven’t reached the level you have achieved. So bear with me in the instructions I give because I am try to bring everybody to your level for creating realistic birds and animals. Please be patient. Thanks
In the description you mention that you undercut the eye channel and cheek, but I couldn’t find where you did that.
I hope the reply I sent you was sufficient and I didn’t handle the video as well as I could have.
@ Yes Frank, thank you.
I would very much like to have your pattern.
I will send you my catalog which list the patterns available and I have kits which includes pattern, feet, eyes, and basswood blank. Please send me your email address so that I can forward the catalog. My email is rauscherfrank7@ gmail.com Thanks
Great project! After the holidays I plan on do this one. You've sent me the kit so I'm ready. Thanks again!
I will send you the goldfinch kit to you and if you need any thing else let me know before I mail it out. Thanks
Nice video, thanks

I have never tried air brushing and haven't really had a desire to try. It seems it would be another tool and technique to learn. I really enjoy painting with a good brush and doing many layers of watered acrylics. I've seen projects done both ways and can't really say one looks that much better than the other. I've really learned a lot from watching how you paint and have adapted a lot if that same technique and I feel I've had pretty good success.
Hi Ken, I would like to be more proficient in using the air brush but get hung up with taking the time to get good. I still like to use the brush also. Keep watching and hope you are enjoying the videos.
I would like to see you carve a crow. I’ve seen all types of songbirds carved, but I’ve never seen anyone do a crow.
I haven’t carved a crow yet. I do have a pattern and feet for the crow but the crow is so large that I would probably carve it half scale. It is an interesting bird but how many people would want to carve it. Maybe down the road. Keep watching and I hope you enjoy the channel. Thanks
Very helpful, thanks friend
You're welcome! Hope you enjoy the rest
Thanks for all these videos, Frank. I'm watching them first, then I'm going to go back and start carving along with you!
Hi, I hope you enjoy all of the videos. I try to give all of the information that I learned over the years of carving. I think you’re doing it right by watching the videos first and then going back and starting the carving and using the videos again. If you ever have any questions, please contact me any time.
Hi, hope you are enjoying all of the videos. I think you are going the right way by reviewing all the videos first and then going back to the videos and starting the carving. If you ever need any help, feel free to contact me
Love your videos I went on google to find your web site so I could order patterns but couldn’t get it pulled up can you send me information on patterns so I can order thanks
Hi, I don’t have a website anymore, but I will send you my catalog through your email. Please send me your email through my email. Rauscherfrank7@gmail.com I do have kits and patterns for projects I done in UA-cam. If you need any help on choosing equipment, contact me. Thanks

@@rauschercarvingsandsupplies Of course I'm enjoying them, yesterday I watched video number 15. It's great how I can see the step by step of every detail of this example, I have bought each of the tools to learn how to do this type of work with these videos. a great plugin to start with. I would like, if possible, to obtain that cardinal bird pattern so I can practice it along with the video and do it step by step. In fact, I was in the United States a week ago and saw a cardinal bird and fell in love with its beauty. I would appreciate if you can share the pattern in pdf. Today I'm going to watch the rest of the videos until the end of the project. Thanks for teaching. Greetings from Costa Rica.

Thank you for this video Frank. Here I’ve been struggling with carbon paper, who knew?……I didn’t.
I am glad I can help
Happy to help!
IMO I see too many people want to depict every feather clearly, when you just do not see that in nature. The wing and tail feathers is where the most detail should be. The contour feathers are not really discernible one from another., and are best suggested by painting rather than burning. Birds are aerodynamic for flight efficiency, and very sleek. The actual thickness of even flight feathers , is very little, less than a sheet of paper. I was taught in art school to never try and represent every feather clearly, the result always looks wrong and clumsy
Hi Stephen, you are right about the feathers on the bird very smooth and I do take artistic liberties which I like to enhance the look of the bird. I do acknowledge that I change thing out an in some cases tell my audience to skip certain steps if it is to tedious. But most of the time I use my own judgment in creating my carving . There are many more feathers in the wing area and I choose to show only some of them. I am trying to create a bird as close as I can. I am not perfect but am trying
@@rauschercarvingsandsupplies is posible to take this pattern of the cardinal bird?

Beautiful workmanship!!!
Thank you for the compliment
Would be interested in how you make a pattern for your carvings,as I'm doing fantasy ( a Phoenix Bird) witch is based a crain, peacock mix. That's why I ask you how to draw out a pattern?
Hi, the way I would approach it by getting tracing paper and going to the internet for drawing of the peacock and the Crain and try combining the to two on tracing paper. When you get a good profile, then try to create a top view. Between these to views that should give you e good start . I hope that helps

Looking forward to this one. Thanks for the great videos.
Hope you enjoy it, thanks
I’m curious how you create the patterns. Do you rent study skins, or did you happen to find a chickadee? Thanks
Hi Noah, the truth is I now create my own patterns myself because I studied the birds over many years and had a good ability for drawing and change the position of the birds now and then. I also reference other patterns originally from other books like Rosylan Daisy “ bird carving books 1 and 2, songbird carvings by Ernest muhlmatt book. I also reference stiller patterns which are still available today. I use skins from private collections that were not available to everyone. I have many patterns available from classes that I created over the years. Probably about 60 or more, I do draw a lot and have done bears , fox, fish, elk, turtles . If you’re looking for info on any subject , just search the internet and practice drawing what you are interested in. I hope this will help you out.
