I have been a live sound engineer for 15 years and I have never believed into an "average" level, especially when it comes to a singer. Levels from a singer can be dramatically dinamyc at times and I always trusted my ears instead of a meete. Plus using 45db of gain in a live music scenario it will only gives you troubles, especially if you are mixing monitors from front of house. I'd rather have a quiter gain instead of feedbacks. It's a good video, but to me it's very theorical and not very practical.

Hi, we recently installed an SQ5 in our Church. I’ve been doing sound tech for a while here and there. When the guys came in to install the mixer I asked if we should turn down the level of the sends to the front of house to allow for what you’re talk about in this video but they said no. This means my signal for most things is quite low but they’re loud as. What should I do?

    • @PluggedinAV

Where does your signal go after the mixer? In an ideal world it should go from the console into a speaker processor and then into the amps. If that’s the signal path I would turn the signal down in the processor. If you don’t have that then you should turn the master down or use a matrix

TLDR: It is DEFINITELY worth it to render 1080 footage in 4K and upload in 4K. The playback is much higher quality with the 4K setting on, regardless of screen resolution. Full explanation: I have a 1080 monitor. I opened both videos in separate tabs, selected 1080p for both, paused the video at the start, skipped to 1:00 using the arrow keys, and then switched between tabs using ctrl + tab number to compare. The difference when both are in 1080p is small, but noticeable. The details of the 4K version are slightly sharper, such as the North Face logo, shirt color seams, beard hair, and some other skin features. However, the 4K version actually has some potentially undesirable smoothness in 1080p, such as the large areas of shirt color or the couch cushions, where it can look a bit blurrier. I think it likely looks nicer in motion though. The REAL difference is when you play the 4K version in 4K and the 1080 version in 1080. There is absolutely no contest. The 4K version is leagues better than the 1080 version. Every single detail in the video is sharper, the colors are richer and less blurry, and all textures are more clear. Easy comparison points are the eyes, beard, fingers, couch cushions, North Face Logo, and t-shirt. The background is relatively equal. For this secondary comparison alone, it is absolutely worth it to render a 1080 video in 4K and upload it as such. I also just did some localized testing, and I found that in Premiere Pro at least, rendering a 1080 sequence in 4K got me BETTER quality results than putting 1080 footage in a 4K sequence and rendering in 4K. This was true regardless of if I used set to frame size or scale to frame size in the 4K sequence. I also found that Hardware encoding provided better results than software encoding, at least with the H.265 encoder. These comparisons were done with bitrate and all other settings the same and by screenshotting full screen images from the same time in each render and zooming in with a photo editing program to compare fine details and textures. Just thought I'd share. Thanks for the comparison videos!

I think you're wrong about the cable shielding. There can't be any interference in the XLR signal; the interference is canceled out in the sum of the signals. In fact, a shielded cable is necessary because it uses it as ground. If it's not shielded, only 3 pairs can be used; one will be used as GND.

What about using Fx bus and what’s then send fader doing? Is it just acting like a master level for all signals that are sent to the Fx bus, basically like a DCA? Thanks 🙏🏻

It’s super clear but i lose you once you talk about when to use which. I assumed that changing your mix for main L/R bus doesn’t influence any of your aux busses. But why would setting an input channel to post fader mean that changing your main L/R bus mix would also change any of the other busses?

    • @PluggedinAV

Post fade literally means post (after) the fader. That means every time you change a fader position that change will be reflected on your post fade bus mix

The extra FX Returns are for if you want more than 4 FX Units as you can setup an AUX to be and FX Send. Just depends on how many Busses and Axes you need for your show. The use case would be if you did a FOH/ Monitor split system where you don't need to use your Auxes for wedges or IEMs at FOH as you have a dedicated monitor console to do all of that. So you could setup a layout where you can run 8 FX Send & Returns & 8 Sub groups if you want if the console is only doing FOH only.

@@pogpogger4381 ok so you go to your FX Return Faders & hit select you then assign and FX unit that you like to that return. you then hit the back panel button to the right of your touch screen. It will say that it's unassigned. Press that button & select the Mix/Return then it will show to columns. Scroll through the first one and find Aux then go to the 2nd column and pick which Aux you want to use as your extra FX Send. Done

I am now in another church setting and bought a different brand of them via Amazon this week. I have opened them up and they use XLR connectors soldered directly onto the PCB. This makes swapping the connectors over much more difficult as the holes on the Female connector sit in a different location than the Male connector. So my advice is, if you are planning on doing a modification to these to switch one or more end points, go for the SSSnake ones, as otherwise you may find your can't do it easily if at all. I am sure the units I bought are fine if you just want a drop snake you don't want to mod. The ones I bought are these: Copkim 2 Pack 4 Channel 3 Pin Multi Network XLR Cable.
