Balsam Swamp State Forest — Astrophotography & Infrared photography
I made another truck camper trip to Balsam Pond located in the Balsam Swamp State Forest, in the New York southern tier, for some astrophotography and infrared photography. I made some unexpected photographic discoveries and had a nice day that I wanted to share with my family & friends. I hope you enjoy it.

This is camping at Long Pond State Forest, located in the town of Smithville, McDonough, NY. It’s a beautiful area with (10) primitive free camping sites available all year long off of NY-41. I provided a look at the campsites and layout of the camping area. I did a quick camping set up, some additional astrophotography and a little Infrared photography. I like doing astrophotography but after ...

Building a truck camper with a Mid-Rise Leer® Cap, utilizing a 12V power station for lights and a large drawer with 60" Vevor® drawer slides.
Beautiful shots. Got to love sitting near a campfire stargazing. Your truck build came out great. I'm a few hrs south near Harriman State Park, but I love truck camping northern catskills/southern Adirondacks. Thanks for posting/sharing.
Thanks for the comment Mike 👍🏻
Such talent! So proud of you, dad! ❤
Thank you. And thanks for letting me hang out in your driveway endlessly to build my truck camper 🛻😍
Really awesome 🎉 I always knew I would see you on utube👍👏👌🏻
You did all the cutting…..indoors…..in a carpeted room? I’d end up living full time in that camper if I tried to pull that one off! 😂
🤣 Good point Grant! 😅 I myself live in a small one bedroom apartment, that I do, on rare occasions, do woodworking in my apartment. Followed by a super clean up with a carpet vacuum & sometimes a shampooer. But most of the work I did was in my daughter & son-in-laws driveway. With an extension cord and a couple of tables I set up a workshop outside in a matter of minutes. I could only work during good weather of course, but being retired that wasn’t a huge problem.
Keith, this is absolutely stunning. 🤩
Thank you! The moonrise wasn’t until 11:15pm, during this trip, so the stars were much more visible than the first camping trip to Taylor Valley.
I'm trying to learn astrophotography, so this question might seem elementary: do you set a timer to take the photos ( while you sleep) overnight, or are you actually taking each photo based on inspection of the sky ? I notice the stars and sky had different coloring at a few points (not referring to the campfire light) - did you alter the sky tones for aesthetics in your post processing? Is that park a dark sky designated park, or just a good place as determined by the dark sky app ? This was a great video, gave helpful guidance and beautiful photos !
Thanks for your comments. I’m taking each photograph with each of two cameras set to times from 10 to 60 seconds depending on the lens focal length and how the results look after each exposure. I have a hand held remote that allows me to fire off exposures while at my 2nd camera (which is why I’m able to be in some of the photos myself). The coloring is in part from post processing (Affinity Photo, RAW development). The earliest shots appear bluer, but most of the color occurred as I attempted to balance out the campfire light which was very orange of course. I myself I’m new at Astrophotography and I’m learning too 🙂. The park is not specifically designated as a dark sky park, but it is in an area that’s relatively low light pollution. Anything showing green or higher seems to work well. The best areas in New York State are of course in the Adirondacks. A great area is Moose River Plains, north of Old Forge. The Sky color is something I’m still learning myself.📷⛺️🌟.
