    he is overtipping by far and must be rich. he i s out of touch with the realities of cuba, to tip more than one dollar is uncallled for, the USD is trading 300 to 350 cuban pesos in 2024. this man is very outdated. it is not my knowledge that they trade the USD to Canadian at a par. maybe the people at these all inclusive resorts may trade the can to the usd at par but the cubans are then losing when they have to buy product s in the foreign currency stores. this man is not au current. rm

      I can only relate the experience I had at the resorts in Cuba. Maybe you know something different than me, and that's fine. As a tourist, I had limited time to explore, but everywhere I went, the Canadian dollar was taken at par with the US dollar.

    Thanks for the info Rick. I'm surprising my husband with a trip to Cuba for Christmas and the currency exchange information is driving me nuts, as everything I've found so far says bring euros or USD. I'm relieved I can use CDN.

      Wow, what a surprise! Yes, CDN is accepted, but just bills...No coins! And a few $1. US bills would be good for tips as our smallest bills are fives. Get some pesos at the hotel lobby by exchanging some CND bills for shopping and extras. Don't need to get more than 50 or 100 at a time because you don't want to be leaving with any pesos. Have a great time! P.s. where are you staying?

    As a Canadian tourist making my 68th trip to Cuba over 30 years this last January/February and March I stayed at the Roc Barlovento and exchanged money with a waiter or the man hosting the Bingo game each day and got 100 pesos for $1.00. Some folks tip with coins which I then helped the waiters etc. by exchanging them for $$$$...It's not necessary to use USA $ if you are Canadian. A fun thing to experience from the hotel is to ride the orange street train for 100 pesos per person round 1 1/2 hour trip to the end of the peninsula....

    • @ricklavoie
      @ricklavoie Рік тому

      Yes, hotels usually exchange money, and it is convenient, but for me I had good luck with the tour guide and restaurant staff. Look for 1 to 100 rate or close to it. Like $1.cad to 100 pesos, while banks might give just 80. This time, I didn't need to go through the hotel reception. My advice is exchange just $50.cad to begin with. Also handy is bringing small Canadian bills for tips, they love it. Don't bring toonies nor loonies!! No good to them!

    • @ricklavoie
      @ricklavoie 2 роки тому

      Probably the best place to get cigars is from a cigar factory if that is part of a tour. A store that has cigars and rum is also good. Just avoid anybody on the street that approaches you as those cigars would be confiscated at the customs, so I was told. As for souvenirs...help anyone you can if you like their stuff. Enjoy!

    Thank you Rick for posting this video. Did you encounter any issues converting Canadian currency, was it always accepted? The information online suggests that the Euro is the better currency to convert to Cuban pesos. Would there be any advantages buying Euros with Cad before leaving Canada? Maybe I'm just over thinking this. lol

    • @ricklavoie
      @ricklavoie 2 роки тому

      Hi Bob, First, Canadian currency is like gold. Don't know about Euros. Since this was a trip to Cuba after 2 years, and everything changed, I did my usual...just brought qty.10 Fifty dollar bills to save space. We ended up bringing back over a $100 Canadian back. There's nowhere to spend. The hotel booked tours take Visa, and so do most of the stores in the village. In fact, the stores didn't take pesos! On the initial coach trip from the airport, the guide said the banks give poor exchange rate of like 80% value, but he offered 100% on the bus, so I took out my first $50 and he gave me 5,000 pesos! not bad. He advised not to deal on the street because of counterfeit bills. At the resort, a waiter offered over 100% exchange at my table. All in all, I only exchanged 4 of my $50 bills. Mostly used for tips, and cola (when they had it)in the resort store. So, if you take Euros, you'll have to change them back anyway when you come home. Hope this helps, and Cuba is still Fun! ...Rick

    • @bobcarriere7856
      @bobcarriere7856 2 роки тому

      Thank you Rick., this is really helpful. I wasn't all that keen on exchanging cad for Euros. The last time we were in Cuba, they had the cup and cuc - that was confusing also. We'll be at an all inclusive resort close to Cienfuegos but some pesos will come in handy when we visit the city. Yes, Cuba is a great place and the Cubans are exceptionally friendly. We are looking forward to what this great island has to offer. Thanks again, Bob

      Too bad you got stuck with all that useless paper. I managed to spend it all, and leave 1000 pesos ($10 can.
