How Efficient is Spray Foam insulation in Extreme Cold? - A Real Test!
Переглядів 276 тис.21 день тому
In today’s video, I’m putting my spray foam insulation to the test in my 36x40 pole barn with 16-foot walls. With Arctic air settling in, it’s the perfect time to see how well the spray foam holds up in extreme cold conditions. Back in October, I had the barn insulated with spray foam, and now, we’re heating it up to 70°F using a torpedo heater. I’ll share how long it takes, how well the barn h...

Can anyone share a video link of someone setting the devices up using a computer? Are these configurable via an app? Any help is greatly appreciated.
It’s super easy to set up with a computer. I’m not tech savvy at all and it was easy for me. This guy does a decent job. ua-cam.com/video/2bW5Sjegljo/v-deo.htmlsi=UirWdFTSz7F6pYCm
bricks don't burn
That’s for sure!
Why you say it like that
Like what?
@@TripleTAcres flammable is generally pronounced with a short (such as in 'ham') a not a long a (flame). It's odd. Probably a regional dialect?
@@WalkerRileyMC 🤷🏻♂️
0 F is not that cold.
Is this a Summertown building
Nope. I built it myself.
What is the temp of the concrete floor?
50
I've been looking at these attachments. They make low flow auger systems for tractor. I'm curious how they perform. Need to research more and my purchase one. What horse power is your tractor?
35 hp
They research these products so well now. Good video. Plus we can count on fire fighters are well informed on toxic gases. Nice video
Thanks Brother!
I mean things like asbestos were billed as safe for decades, I mean we could bring out about 100 items we were told were safe and really they weren't but they were safe to make companies rich I mean it's only temporarily toxic isn't very comforting to most people. I mean hospitals used lead paint and asbestos and well a ton of toxic chemicals
Spray foam insulation is safe when installed correctly, and it’s fundamentally different from materials like asbestos or lead paint. Once it cures, the foam becomes a stable, inert material that doesn’t release harmful chemicals. The primary risk occurs during installation when the foam is still curing, but professionals use protective gear and proper ventilation to minimize any exposure. Additionally, modern safety standards ensure that spray foam is rigorously tested and regulated. In short, while older materials were later found to be dangerous, properly installed spray foam is designed to be safe.
Quit calling it a barn its not a fricking barn!!!
🤣
Do you still need spectrum
Yes, you still need an internet provider.
Why not just use a tp link cps via fiber.each of this cps can go a radius of upto 2mtrs.
It is useless experiment , it depends on slab temperature .
I’m an installer myself and I have 2 comments. The guy did a great job, he knows what he’s doing. However, his mask doesn’t even have cartridges on it. It’s barely helping, if at all. He’s also not wearing goggles while doing walls. Just wear your stuff man, keep yourself healthy.
Token Canadian says..... That's not very cold lol. BTW, that stuff burns like crazy - best to cover it.
Was that close cell or open?
Open
Bad chain saw music.
He should have unplugged the torpedo heater after the room got up to 70°F. Then take temperature readings every 15 minutes.
With only 3" of spray on for the walls and 12" of blow in for the attic my 36x36x10 garage was easily held at 60 degrees when it was -12 F with 40 mph winds using a 36K BTU propane heater. You're absolutely right about the ceiling fan even with lower ceilings.
Go checkout my follow up video! I answered some of the questions and comments in it. ua-cam.com/video/vj4OrYvHRH0/v-deo.html
Does heat really need to be "pulled up"? I would think reversing the fan and pushing the naturally rising warm air down would be the thing to do. I also think that by pulling the warmest air in the building off the ceiling area and pushing it down, the items in the building would warm quicker. Good experiment regardless with useful information.
Would be interested in a longer term test using the biggest heatsink in the shop measured. THE CONCRETE FLOOR :)
Does anyone know where i can find part numbers and or a website to buy parts? I have the 2022 Encore Edge 48"
Good helpful video! Suscribed!
Thanks for watching! Glad you found it helpful!
People need something to be afraid of......for some people it's spray foam!! Good info, Mike!
Thanks Brad!!
I'm hungry work where i'm getting thirty plus and cold or i'm leaving
How does your Topedo heater start up if the temperature drops? Mine has to have a manual start so I have to push a button. Does it have a pilot light that just runs?
I have it plugged into a thermostat.
Smart man.
House spray foamed here in AZ, underside of roof, all walls and roof n walls in garabge, so much quieter than standard insulation and great for utility bills
If you can, Can you Share the company who did the work? as Im in Ohio as well and looking to due my pole barn as well. Thanks
Send me an email. I’ll share it with you.
Great video on closed cell foam performance! But what I’m concerned about if that concrete is ice cold so your heating source is constantly competing against that ice cold concrete. Concrete is a sponge so it will hold moisture and that moisture is ground temperature. Any concrete slab with a structure should have at least 2" rigid insulation board underneath for a thermal brake. I’d personally put at least 4" or more! I’d also add a glycol systems in that concret for the futur!
I agree! Thanks for watching!
Welcome to wood rot, termites and mold 😂
🤣
Spray foam insulation is superior for out buildings, but not houses. If you put your house on the market, any prospective buyer requiring a mortgage will get the house appraised by the lender. Most lenders will not approve a mortgage with spray foam insulation because they believe it could conceal hidden structural damage such as rot to framing. Before having it installed, ask your own lender if this is true. You will get an education.
The situation you are referring to has been making the news recently and is a problem with old homes that were retrofitted with spray foam in the UK. The vast majority of these installs were either done improperly, wrong product specified (open cell applied to roof decks when closed cell should have been used), or even performed on roofs that had active leaks that should have been fixed prior. The Brits banned spray foam on the underside of the roof in a knee jerk reaction. This has not blown up into any sort of real problem in the US/Canada and it's highly unlikely it ever will.
4 degrees LOL that’s balmy.
There’s a lot to consider when insulating. I would have never put a thought in for the concrete.
For sure! I really wish I would have put some insulation under the concrete.
Very informative video! I can’t wait to see what you put on the interior walls.
I didn't have that high of a ceiling but to make it easier to heat i stretched canvas drop cloths across the rafters
spray foam insulation releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemicals can be harmful and create poor indoor air quality.
Spray foam is toxic your house or barn will always put all VOC Google it Spray Foam puts off volatile organic chemicals.. Spray foam slowly kills you. It will be like asbestos. It will take years to be a class action lawsuit
Open-cell? I thought closed cell is what you should go for. How come you'he chosen open cell?
Open cell was less than half the cost.
@@TripleTAcresThank you for clarifying that. Indeed, considering the results, seems like open cell is enough. Not sure what could justify paying double
It’s amazing to me that you can get and keep insurance with a wood burning stove. More and more that’s a no go for insurance companies.
Great vid, useful info! Without foam, the concrete will likely stabilize at your under ground temp... likely around 45 to 55F. Which is great for cooling in the summer and taking the bite off a winter chill. To help warm the interior you could add a radiant heat loop around the perimeter. I would think the most efficient temp would be 60's in the winter and 80's in the summer.
Did you have anything under the cement for insulation
Warmed up to -20 today
Holy smokes! That’s cold!🥶
@TripleTAcres I'm in the middle of Alaska that's not cold. In the 70s I remember it often being colder than -50. Once -75. No wind!
That’s wild! I give you serious props for living out there! Thanks for watching! Stay warm!
@TripleTAcres thanks the weather's a lot different these days it was raining last week and cold this week crazy. I have relatives in the 48 states and they have to stay indoors because it's too hot.
@TripleTAcres if the government really cared rather than making more oil they would make insulation cheaper. 4'x8' foam is almost $100 here
What did it cost to have the insulation installed ?
Okay it's about 40° ambient temperature with no heat ,did you insulate the floor?
Nope. No insulation under the concrete. I wish I had.
Sorry apray foam is very bad when it comes to repairs
Obviously we don't need to breathe oxygen any more. The entire oxygen claim that we need it is a conspiracy to make us spend a little more on fresh air. Great job of showing us that we don't need to breath air and all we need is an airtight box to live in hooray for you.
Great video, thank you.
Thanks!!
The only time I've installed 5 inches is a ice manufacturing plant warehouse. I recommend 3" in the roof and 2" in the walls of 2lb. foam. 5 1/2 inches is super insulated for a shop.
He used open cell foam...you are referring to closed cell that has double the R-value per inch.
How much did it cost to spray it?
