SERFA Session: Reading and Understanding Contracts

Gigs are like icebergs: behind each musical performance lies a long backstory of conversations, relationships and agreements. Many of us book using verbal agreements and have never run into problems. However, as we progress in our careers, we will find ourselves increasingly needing more than just a handshake to act as the foundation of the terms of a performance. Whether you are a musician, bo...

My Dad had dementia of some sort and gradually became withdrawn to the point that he just would not interact with us. Spending time with him was difficult because its hard to keep up a monologue. One day as is was thinking about the situation, I remembered how much he loved music and opera especially. So the next time I went to see him I brought my MP3 player and some headphones. I put on Aida, one that he was particularly fond of and placed the headphones on him. It was the first time I had seen him smile in years. He could connect with music long after everything else failed to engage him. I am convinced that music goes deep into our souls. Thank you Kathy for affirming this.

"Make new songs, but sing the old-One is silver and the other gold". I started my research into folk music when I was able to talk-age 3 or so. I still sing and teach the old stuff. The old ballads are storytelling at its best and the songs that reflect the struggles we are still fighting are still important.

I had the honor to attend the Minnesota Folk Festival in 1980 or 81 when Norman and Nancy were playing with James Bryan. I will never forget after the show, there was a rock and roll band playing next door. Nancy, who never said a word all night peeked through the curtain, then turned to me and said "Fuckin' great ain't they?" I was floored! School marm she ain't ! Love these guys, As good as it gets.

It could have been one of many singers. I think that was one of the influences of the "music Business". Because I soloed I was often required to hire other instrumentalists to play with me on stage. Always hated that, but that is how the music bus. thinks.

I was at that 1st concert by the Aereo-Plain band at The Marketplace where Nancy (and I) first heard Norman. As a teenager I was friends with her brothers and after she started hanging out with Norman I got to rub elbows with him a bit and do him some favors. He was very encouraging of my budding interest in picking and even gave me a spare guitar in return for helping to load his moving van. It's great to see N&N interviewed, and hear that after all these years Nancy is still as committed as ever to the things she values.

As much as Peggy Seeger is a legend, I must protest! She has got it wrong on what she terms ‘classical’ music. It is vast, and changing, and forever evolving, yet enduring, enriching, everlasting. For everyone and wonderful! There is room in this world for it all.

What a joy to see them both. Restored an old French cello for Nancy and set up one of Mr. Blake's 12 fret Martin D-18 guitars when repairing musical instruments for George Gruhn in the late '70's. So sorry to hear James Bryan is having health problems. Enjoyed many an hour playing fiddle with him on his front porch. Wonderful folks and I wish them all well and thank them for such precious memories.
