Just picked up on on sale through BA, can't wait for it to arrive. I kind of needed a 'swiss army knife" pack that I can use as a bag to carry items to work, for a quick weekend out of town to visit family, and then turn around and take it on day hikes, or just running errands on my bicycle around town. I own 2 tents, 4 sleeping bags, and a couple different sleeping pads/air mattresses. I love the brand, love the quality in their work.

What a helpful, useful reply. This just makes my decision even harder 🙂 I spent 3 hours in REI yesterday trying on so many packs with weight in them. I had my mind set on the deuter Trail Pro 34, SL which is the women's version (didn't purchase yet). I have a short torso and I'm only 5 ft 5 in and very fit. I've got to see if I can find this pack in a store. Thanks very much for your effort.

In all respect, I would say that the blank plate is made for climbing... For a classic Kick & Glide, you need the little resistance of the standard bumber... In downhill mode, you could use the rigid bumper. Take care.

So I bought a Rainshadow over the Torrentshell. Both are 3-layer but it looked nicer and was only $20 more. I’ve noticed something.. the 20D outer nylon should make it less durable, as the Torrentshell has 50D. That’s not what’s happened though.. it’s more durable and takes about twice as long to wet out in constant rain. The Rainshadow has ended up being the best rain gear I’ve ever had. Three long years now and it still looks new.. I haven’t even washed it yet cause I use public washers and those things scare me cause industrial strength haha. Torrentshell is a good first rain jacket.. for just like $30 more you can get better rain gear from Patagonia though. I’d buy the Triolet or Storm10 if I needed a new jacket. Keep in mind, they last about a decade with hard use, so break the process out over ten years. My $200 Rainshadow actually cost me $20/year.. not bad at all.
