GLASS - Why we green lane - meet the users who found freedom with their 4x4
Green lanes provide access to the countryside to more types of user than any other right of way and the diversity of people who use them is huge. There is no such thing as a "typical laner" and the benefits laning affords people differs from person to person.
To celebrate this diversity we thought we'd introduce you to a few users who have kindly offered to share their stories about why they lane and why it is important to them.
Formed in 1995 the Green Lane Association is a national organisation that promotes inclusive countryside access for all.
Our members use green lanes for all sorts of reasons - work, pleasure, to help maintain public rights of way in the UK, or because they simply cannot experience the beauty of the countryside any other way.

In R v Secretary of State for the Environment Ex p Hood [1975] (“the Hood case”) QB Lord Denning summarised this as: "The object of the statute is this: it is to have all our ancient highways mapped out, put on record and made conclusive, so that people can know what their rights are. Our old highways came into existence before 1835. They were created in the days when people went on foot or on horseback or in carts. They went to the fields to work, or to the village, or to the church. They grew up time out of mind. The law of England was: Once a highway, always a highway. But nowadays, with the bicycle, the motor car and the bus, many of them have fallen into disuse. They have become overgrown and no longer passable. But yet it is important that they should be preserved and known, so that those who love the countryside can enjoy it, and take their walks and rides there.

Sorry for the million questions. Does this include lanes that are just open to motorbikes as well? And does it have a tool to generate a route that avoids main roads as much as possible? And does the mobile app support live tracking? I'm looking for something that works like a satnav but for green lanes.

Those lanes are an unappreciated, national treasure. Pity that are under attack from vested interests. Most are hundreds of years old, some well over a thousand years old. They predate for example the canal network which has millions spent of it. Researching the routes of the lanes is also part of the fun, old maps and documents, bringing history to life.

I think what you do is a good thing but… I like a bit of green landing. I’m a responsible driver/4x4 owner. I was out walking in the Yorkshire Dales between Xmas and the new year. I encountered 3 convoys of 8 and 10+ vehicles, most jacked with tyres and snorkels etc. plenty of ‘one life, live it’ stickers too. That does my head in. That doesn’t do much for our cause and makes me resent the scene.

sadly if you drive a 4x4 on lanes you are seen as a hooligan, you cant see a physical disability in a car so the rambliars won't give it a second thought, lets hope it makes a difference.
