    You can still get the same quality they had available in the 1950's and 1960's. And if you adjust for inflation it still costs the same. The problem is that means that refrigerator your grandma had would cost you about $4000 today.

    • @mfbfreak
      @mfbfreak 8 днів тому

      No you literally cannot get the same quality in many cases. You can pay for such quality, but there is a very significant chance that the internal components are chinese crap, or that reasonable quality components are used, but not available to individual repair shops, so the cost of keeping an appliance running is much higher than it used to be because only 'Authorized' repair places can buy the parts. Also, you can't count on parts availability for more than a handful of years after production of an appliance ended. Stuff lasted forever because of good parts availability. It's not that things didn't break - things ABSOLUTELY broke - it's that repair was possible without exorbitant manufacturer markups on the spare parts.

      @@mfbfreak when was the last time you shopped for parts on a $4000 refrigerator?

      Also: what's with anti China sentiment. You're talking about our largest trading partner in the US as if they make $.99 junk. People in the west only want the cheap stuff so that's what gets bought. You also don't seem to understand that even the highest quality products in electronics come from China. The US military is built around Chinese products. You just buy what's cheap, and then when it breaks you suddenly care about country of origin and odds are, it came from China because they're the largest manufacturing country in the world. American made version of almost every single product are available, people just see them as luxury items because they cost more.

    My family has always used ours. They are supposed to look "barely used" because they are expensive and supposed to be well cared for. Ours come out on holidays and are immediately washed, DRIED, and put back.

  • @nellepolansky300
    @nellepolansky300 9 днів тому

    The way that they are tarnished definitely suggests that they have been used but well cared for.

    My mother had the same bed sheets our whole life and was given them as a wedding gift. I'm lucky if a set of $70 sheets makes it two years.

    I have a set of those Ganesh (elephant) bronzewear. My boyfriend carried them home for me when we went to Thailand. It's service for 12. It's one of the reasons I married him. That set is heavy! We use it for family holidays, and special parties.

    Their previous owner prized them enough to take good care of them. Sadly, our society has degenerated to the point where nobody has any concept of gentility.

    They normally get used just for special events. They’re a relic from when people routinely hosted fancy dinner parties for 20 people at a time, but that hasn’t been a thing for a few generations now. Boomers and some genX only break it out for holiday dinners, but if you’re never the one hosting the gathering, you don’t need a set. Younger genX and millennials typically don’t care all that much about fancy stuff just for the sake of being fancy. Grandma’s fine china also has a tendency to wind up in consignment shops. My in-laws have 4 sets of china and at least one set of silver cutlery, and they only ever use 1 set of each and only on thanksgiving and Christmas. My husband and I, and his brother have no need for any of that, holiday dinners taste just fine on regular plates and we’re not hosting dinners with anyone we feel the need to impress. So when his parents pass, that’s going to be 4 more sets of fine china, and at least one set of silver cutlery that will end up in a consignment shop with all of the others. My family’s sets are suffering a similar fate. My mom already got rid of hers and the sets my grandma had that my uncles and cousins didn’t want.
