Fucking awesome bike, but IMHO these bikes ALL need the upgrades I'm always yapping about on the 'F-orum, (www.cb1100f.net) such as the 276mm rear disc mod, the Akront "NERVI" rims, 41mm or better yet 43mm TRAC forks ("Ask me how"! Ha-ha. ST1100-ABS had a right-hand-side 43mm TRAC fork, but it sure seems "ambidextrous" IMHO, and is set up for 316mm discs!) Or a period-correct beefy alloy swinger, like how Ontario Moto Tech used the twin-shock alloy arms from '79-'80 DIRT-BIKES, might've been the Elsinore 250 IIRC - And possibly even a "front hub trick" on the rear wheel, with bolt-up cush-drive. That, or a substitute hunk of billet built into an XBR500 rear wheel where there's normally a compact CB400T/CB250N size DRUM hub - Heck, maybe even a modern cast-mag wheel cut down to the XBR's rear hub dimensions? Anything to reduce rear hub mass, to go along with the wider yet 50% lighter rim upgrade from Akront "NERVI" - these hubs are ridonculously over-weight, as are the damn rims. That being said, I wouldn't want anything BUT the original Comstar wheels on an 'R-bike. Well, "original" being open to interpretation! I'd keep the SPOKES, let's put it like that! Ha-ha. No, really though - you CAN have the original look & style AND the necessary upgrades to turn these bikes into some truly competitive classic racers. Beefing up the chassis, yeah - but also in getting the weight down, specifically on the rims hubs and rotors. CB1100RB rotors are available from Metalgear Australia, for that light-weight dished type in 296mm, which is awesome for a Daytona style track, but while the surface area of the double-thick vented rotors (got a pair on the "CB900K0 Bol Bomber" right now - which of course is what you call an '82 Bol D'Or based 'homage' to the '65 CB450K0 Black Bomber, duh.) There's 'R-iginality well yeah, but then there's getting all of the best components from the entire Honda box-a-tricks. There's ALSO another 5-bolt 296mm disc which nobody thinks of - from the '77-'78 SOHC CB750A Hondamatic, with the single disc & Comstar wheels, which is a standard SOHC 'K style 9-rivet disc, but it's drilled to match the Comstar front wheel. That's a good "mid-weight" rotor, between the CB1100R-C/D, CBX-pro-link, GL1100A type double-layered vented discs, and the single-piece dished 296mm from CB1100RB (in replica form from Metalgear, even a better deal than their rebuild service on the 9-rivet types. Now, they could either rebuild your REAR disc to 276mm specs, or you could simply cut one down and skim it smooth - either way, the '82 FT500 Ascot had a caliper & hanger set up for the 276mm size, and it's on the right-hand-side, unlike all of the shaft-drive stuff from CX500T/CX650T Turbo, which I suppose would make for a pretty good under-slung version of which. The thing is, the FT500 caliper & hanger look absolutely stock, so this mod would absolutely fly under the radar. As would a 3.50x18" or 4.25x18" rear rim in Akront "NERVI" types. IF you're at all interested, I could tell you where to buy a 2.50x18" to rebuild a FRONT wheel, right now on eBay. Just let me get MINE first! Ha-ha. As for the 'RB '81 model, my main criticism would be it needs the 2.50x18" front "reverse" type Comstar from the GL1100A Aspendade. That would really help things. Gotta wonder too, if the 18/18 wheel-set throws off the whole look of the '81 model, whether it wouldn't make sense to rebuild with a 4.00x17" D.I.D. type center-flange (Comstar style) rim, which was used on the Yamaha Super-Tenere, in a reverse-spoke wire-laced wheel, with nipples in the hub and bent heads in the rim, CMX450 style - I'm sticking some awesome wire-spoke rims to my CB900K0 Bol Bomber", but I just passed over a VERY low priced pair of MARVIC rims, in the very same sizes I'm using, 3.5x16" & 4.25x18" - if only 'cause the central flange had been trimmed by Marvic, otherwise I'd have been pleased as punch to rebuild that rear wheel as a COMSTAR - I'm partial to the early silver type, though I'd prefer to avoid the steel spoke plates, and am unfamiliar with the '79 wheel's material - so perhaps some Boomerang rims might be good.....
