I haven't read Ritualist but for Primal Hunter I would definitely say it is elaborated on why Jake is the way he is and his characterization becomes better over time. He becomes less of a loner in the way he is in the tutorial even though he prefers to be alone. The system is also gets more lore concerning what it is and how the multiverse operates. The tutorial really is a tutorial and the story doesn't really begin until after it is over. I really enjoy it.

Primal Hunter is actually my current favorite litrpg series and I've read many of them, though not the Ritualist. I'm going to go watch your other video about DCC and HWFWM since I've also read both of them and I'll be curious as to your thoughts. PH doesn't really get going until the 2nd/3rd book where you get introduced to some other characters who are really great. I know the Tutorial doesn't end in the 1st book and in the story doesn't truly begin until the Tutorial is over. I hope you continue with the series and post your thoughts. Many folks are of the opinion that PH gets better and better with every book for the first few. My current big 5 of litrpg series is PH, DCC, HWFWM, Defiance of the Fall, and System Universe. All of them are fairly well known in this space, so those are some suggestions you can try out. Some other honorable mentions are Viridian Gate Online and Mother of Learning(not litrpg but a timeloop mystery).

@thesandersreview Yes, I saw him in an interview and he said it was cathartic to write Fury. I read the last one the week it came out and for me he could have filled it out so much more. I would rate Fury 4.5 out of 5. However as I've mulled over it in my mind I've realised the end is a tightly written climactic revenge tale for the main characters. This isn't a perfect book, but as time goes by I like it more. I read it from the library and have bought a set for rereading. I liked Shadow the best. You gotta point out a 4.1 rating is not the greatest rating? what has goodreads done to peoples minds. I never took ratings seriously, I looked at certain ratings on popular books that I've read, then look at my all time favourites, and I can see why it's easy to be toxic in this regard, so I just stay off it entirely. A book can be great and simply not be for you, but I get a feeling that a lot of people DNF books that don't like how it challenges them, or they're simply not interested (which is fine) but then slam it with a low rating before moving on.

@@KIRI77 thank you for your comment. I believe I was trying to say it wasn’t the highest rated on my list of DNF books, but it probably wasn’t clear enough. This is kinda funny but I have read all the first books in your TOP 3 and stopped before reading the second! Jade City was a superbly written book but maybe not for me as it was very character driven with little plot. I really liked the Lies of Locke Lamora, but I can't stand reading anything ship related. I agree about American Gods. Neil Gaiman is good, not great, and his books are way over-hyped. I was particularly disappointed in the ending. This past summer I read the acclaimed Blindsight by Peter Watts. It's good, maybe not up to the hype. The characters and what they do are odd but interesting. (Will people of the future really see multiple personalities as a desirable advantage? Doubts...) I moved on to the sequel Echopraxia despite hearing negatives about it. Got about 2/3 the way through and DNF. The main character does little to advance the plot and is just led along like a puppy. Although he has a college degree and a respectable job everyone around him sees him as an ignorant fool. It got annoying and I gave up.

Reread the first three as a mental cleanse after finishing. Second Apocalypse. Ironically BC predates wh40k. By modern standards it is pretty tame. Yes Shadows Linger is the best of the three. It is likely more highly rated by authors and older readers. More recent readers have difficulty with the prose. Apparently he wrote while qorking on an assembly line hence the short sentences and paragraphs. Erickson wrote the prologue to a recent reissue. Reaper's Gale is dedicated to Cook for obvious reasons and Cook has apparently said Erickson writes Cook better than he does. Dread Empire is also very good.

empire of the vampire is pure edgelord material. It is not good. I reread it recently and my rating went from 4 stars to 2. The story interests me enough that'll keep going, but man is it hard to get past the teenage angst of this grown-ass man of a main character. Excellent and fun analysis. I have read and enjoyed both series, and I agreed with most of your points. Just to add something new, I'll give my vote on Plot, which you decided was a tie. While you made a good case, I'm going to give it to DCC in that it compacts down a large amount of plot in 6 books, while HWFWM might have taken 9 to achieve the same depth.⬅ Suggestion: in all three videos of yours I have watched, you display some really well done illustrations for a number of the characters as you discuss them. If you yourself are the artist, by all means say so. If you have downloaded them from sites like DeviantArt, I suggest adding links, at least going forward, to the artists whose excellent work you share. Most people won't "more" the video notes section to see the links, but some people, like me, do.

This is one of my tops series as well. I saw a UA-cam video recently, sort of a podcast with Matt and Jeff Hayes talking about what's going on right now relating to DCC. The next book is written but Matt plans on making a few final touches to it. Jeff is anxious to record it, but he doesn't want to start anything until Matt says he is done making changes.⬅ The character depth of DCC is my favorite part. The worlds design is also fantastic. (Each dungeon level is effectively a new world.) And it is just plain fun!⬅ Besides HWFWM and DCC, my other three favorite litRPGs are _Defiance of the Fall,_ _Primal Hunter,_ and _Eight._ DotF is probably the most like HWFWM in structure. The MC isn't isekaid, but Earth itself is drastically altered. I guess that last bit gives it significant DCC vibes too, but it has a more serious tone. _Primal Hunter_ has the MC being mainly a loner, but an extremely powerful one. And _Eight_ is sort of a comfy isekai adventure. A retired adult male on modern day Earth dies in a car accident, and ends up in a new and dangerous world as an eight year boy alone in the woods.⬅ There are a ton of great litRPG stores. Many of them first begin as web novels, often receiving new chapters each week. The free-reading site Royal Road has a number of these, including most of the above. Someone preferring to only read completed books can subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, which has a very large number of books included in the subscription plan, including these same books. (As a book gets published by Kindle Unlimited, the author needs to remove it from Royal Road. But that's okay, while you can catch up with books 1-3 on Kindle Unlimited, you can then immediately continue with book 4 as the author adds new chapters.⬅ Oh! One more exceptional litRPG series is _Solo Leveling,_ (aka _Only I Level Up_ ). It is a Korean series, well translated into English. Most people became aware of it due to the manhwa adaptation (Korean online color manga), and the first season was also adapted into an excellent anime available right now on Crunchyroll. I saw the anime first, then couldn't wait and read the full series of novels. The entire story is complete in that format.

Thank you for covering this series. I've read most of the series and enjoyed it a lot. One minor correction -- while HWFWM is both litRPG and an isekai, they are not the same thing. Isekai is a Japanese word meaning "other world". Stories that use the concept involve a character from one world ending up in another. Classic examples from English literature are _Alice in Wonderland_ and _A Connectocut Yankee in King Arthur's Court._ Note that neither is litRPG. That classification is pretty much as you described, a story built around role playing game mechanics. Neither needs to include the other.
