HISTORY
Liberty London is an iconic department store with a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. It was founded in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, who envisioned a store that would introduce a unique blend of Oriental-inspired decor and design to the British public. He started with a small shop on Regent Street, primarily selling imported fabrics, ornaments, and artworks from Japan and the East, which captured the imaginations of Victorian London.
Over time, Liberty became synonymous with the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as with Art Nouveau, championing artisan-crafted goods and unique designs. Its signature fabric patterns, particularly floral prints, became highly popular in the early 20th century, creating what is now known as "Liberty prints." These prints are still widely recognized and remain central to the Liberty brand.
In 1924, the famous Tudor-style building that houses Liberty today was constructed on Great Marlborough Street, using timber from ancient ships. This architectural style gives the store a distinct, historic appearance that stands out in London's retail landscape. Liberty has remained an influential fashion and design destination over the years, known for blending classic British style with bold, contemporary artistry.
