That and it sounds like they look down on you for it regardless. As for the part about the restaurant. If you wanna have a happy relationship then you need to accompany her to places serving meat even if you don't eat there sometimes because she wants you there. However that does not give her the right to think she can make you change especially if you're not open to changing. I'd have to say yeah, it wasn't the best move. Probably AH territory but here's why. Your wedding is your day but you can't forget that you have guests at your wedding who chose to be there to support you. They didn't owe you their time, a gift, or anything. It was their choice to attend, for your sake, not theirs. They took their time to go and do this to be there on your special day. Don't be one of those people who actually thinks your day is as important to them as it is for you, it's not. No really, it's not. They have their own lives and other obligations but yet they chose to spend this time with you to show support because they care about you. I understand a dress code was issued and it wouldn't have been good if everyone had disregarded it and just decided to wear what they wanted because that would be disrespectful, but it isn't sounding like she was purposefully being disrespectful. She didn't have anything else but still wore a dress and came to support you on your special day. Would you have preferred she not attend? What would you have said and thought if she declined to attend because she couldn't meet the dress code? Would you have understood or have some complaint or hurt about that as well? I don't know exactly why she didn't have the clothes on that you wanted. But what it boils down to is you had a choice. Do you value a dress code more than your friend's presence in support of your life event? Were you more happy with everyone in the right dress or that you have people who love you enough to give up their time to support your day? Will you make this about a dress or about friendship? Sometimes in life you need to look at the bigger picture and extend some grace. She didn't follow the dress code, but she did show up for you and that didn't warrant you taking her aside and pointing out, even in private, what she was already aware of. I could be misreading her intentions but if she is a 'close friend' as you say, I don't understand the hurt feelings. It's not like she made a scene or showed up in a clown suit. OP wasn't an AH on how she handled it. That said I think we need to normalize people skipping events when the hosts ask for things outside our abilities or comfort. Things like child free wedding when you got kids. These dress code weddings. etc. Seriously folks just skip & send why you won't be able to attend. I got kids & no one to watch them. I don't have money to buy a fancy outfit for a couple of hours.
