    Burnt umber is easy enough to mix without it taking up a slot unless you use it alot. How do you like the grumbachers watercolors? I have some and they are decent but seem not as finely ground as say daniel smith. But they do have some cool colors like thio violet and magnesium green. I really love there mag green and perylene maroon. This color palette is similiar to mine minus but four or five colors. ❤ Lovely color selection for a landscape palette.

      Yes, it’s so difficult to narrow down the colors! And it does depend on what landscapes you like to paint. I love Southern Utah red rock so I used lots of colors to help me paint that scenery. Are you in Ireland?

      Isn't that awesome?! It can hold so many brushes and supplies. It's the perfect bag for me. And thanks for your kind comment about my son being lucky to have me. I am so lucky to have him too! Actually, he's just 1 of 5 kids I'm blessed to have.

  • @MrsBarnabas
    @MrsBarnabas 5 місяців тому

    I love the fact that your son shares your love for art, and that you've made his bag almost the same as yours (almost + adding in markers). That glimpse of his work in the Canson sketchpad says he really does have an ability to encourage - it muist feel really good to be able to share this with him! I'd suggest adding a small selection of coloured pencils (maybe a 12 pack of Faber Castell Polychromos, or Caran D'Ache Pablo) and show him how to mix, blend and layer those colours to make an infinite number of other colours, and eg slimmer brush markers to that central roll, rather than leaving it empty for brushes which he won't need? But something you said made me exclaim, "Oh no! Why???" That 'something' was when you said you'd told him to save his Arches paper for his 'special' work. I know Arches is expensive (the most expensive on the market!), but I feel that far too many people consider their supplies too special to be used "until I'm good enough." and consequently, they never get used! Maybe you could have chosen / could choose a less expensive, but equally good 100% cotton paper? There are so many to choose from - Saunders Waterford and Fabriano, for example!!! Yes, I'm all for a less expensive 'watercolour doodle' sketchbook, but even that could be a 100% cotton - eg Baohong or Meeden? And maybe a good dry media sketchbook? Ok, maybe this comment's a bit of a cheek, given that I've not commented on your channel before, but I'm a children's worker and an art tutor, and just felt the need to add these thoughts about his bag... 😊

    • @britthartart
      @britthartart 5 місяців тому

      I love that you're a children's worker and an art tutor! What a great job! I appreciate your comment and understand what you're saying about the paper. And yes, Fabriano is a great option for 100% cotton paper. I actually like it better than Arches! I don't even use Arches myself anymore. I feel like my watercolors come out "dull" on it for some reason. And I know what you mean about artist's not using their "good" paper until they feel like they're good enough to use it. That's how I used to feel but luckily, you do grow out of that. What I think would be the best practice is to find your favorite, affordable 100% cotton paper and stick with it! That way you get to know the paper well and you figure out how it reacts to water/watercolors. I use Fabriano and Baohang 100% cotton paper mostly for my work, but I do reach for my Canson watercolor paper for watercolor cards. For now, my son will continue to practice on Canson watercolor paper. For his next sketchbook we'll probably step it up to 100% cotton paper. I just hope he sticks with it! I think he will.

      @@britthartart Hi again. Thanks for the reply! Paper: I trial papers with my students so that I know I'm offering them the best possible options and having tried a few, they can choose what suits them. They have a made-by-me watercolour sketchbook which they can use to experiment in as they like. It has ten different papers: some are wood pulp, some are 100% cotton, and it is made up of 28 x 38 paper, folded in half and stitched, so they get four 28 x 14cm sides of each to work with. In class, they'll use the same papers for various watercolour projects. My own favourites are all 300gsm, Saunders Waterford cold pressed for still life, etc, and Fabriano Artistico rough for my plein air and studio landscapes, both of which have been my go-to papers for 26 years (!!! 😮 ) but I also like Hahnemühle The Collection, and Lanaquarelle. Not so keen on Sennelier, and detest Canson student (wood pulp) papers! For watercolour cards, I usually use the SW and FabArt, because they are usually only postcard size or smaller, so it's a good way to use up off-cuts. For dry media (I love working with graphite!) I used to use W&N 190gsm sketchbooks, or A3 medium surface spiral pads, but while the sketchbook paper itself remains good, the actual sketchbooks are no longer so well-made. So I've switched to Seawhite of Brighton, which I'd used occasionally and really liked, and which, like W&N, will take light washes of watercolour and / or ink. And Talens Art Creation is great for fun projects! Some folk do get over their 'preciousness', but a lot never do (along with other ArtTubers, even Lindsay Weirich still struggles with this problem!). I never had it in the first place. I used Cotman as a beginner, and it worked well, but I swapped after a few months when I discovered it actually cost more per square inch than professional papers! I'd used a variety of papers over the years for craft projects, so had quickly discovered that most of the cheaper stationers art papers were not the best buy! But I think I was lucky. Coming back to painting seriously in the mid 1990's, UA-cam was still in its infancy, a place to share one's photos and little videos with family and friends. Online shopping was also in its infancy, and I saw the birth and early years of companies like Ken Bromley and Jacksons, and Rosemary and co, when choice was greater, perhaps than in our local stores, but nowhere near the massive choices we have now! Now, YT is awash with endless videos on seemingly endless topics, all advocating different things. The issue with ArtTube is the fads - everyone jumps on the bandwagon and the choice is so vast that many have far more art supplies than they can possibly use in their lifetime, and many of which sit unused on their shelves after they've done initial 'reviews'. And Jacksons, and Rosemary and Co are massive world-wide concerns, taking art products into countries where art suppliers are best known by their absence. (That also applies here in France!) Yes - working with children, and teaching art (among other things) have been among the great joys of my life! I'm incredibly blessed to have had such joy and fulfilment! From the small part I've seen of your son's work via this video, I think he really does have something worth encouraging, and I'm glad that he has a mother who does encourage him! Oops! 😮😮😮!!! I have 'talked' far too much and I should have been cooking dinner!!! But I as before, I hope that something I've written here helps others. 😊

      @britthartart 5 місяців тому

      @@MrsBarnabas Thank you for all your wise input! I could talk art all day too! I will definitely check out the supplies you recommended. I think that's genius that you make up your own sketchbooks for your students to try different types of paper and figure out what paper they like. I have a class coming up and I'm going to take your idea and offer different types of 100% cotton 140 lb cold press paper to try. Thank you!

      @@britthartart _"I'm going to take your idea ..."_ What a compliment! Thank you!!!! I hope your upcoming class brings you great joy as you all learn alongside one another (I find I learn as much - and possibly more! - from my students (regardless of the subject I'm teaching, whether art, music, English as a second language or Bible teaching), as they learn from me, but what I learn is not necessarily about art or the other subjects so much as about them as people who have ideas to offer, what I learn about myself and how to adapt the planned teaching to suit them...

    Very cool tutorial. I have bought this same palette but wasn't sure how to set up the colors. And adding a swatch chart to it is a good idea. Thank you.
